I got this idea from last night's chatroom discussion, and JDFP specifically. There were remarks about 80s music being great. Well, it's time to celebrate that greatness.

For those of us that experienced the 80s (or most of it, anyway), music and radio absolutely reveloved around Casey's Top 40, a countdown hosted by Casey Kasem. Americans know exactly what I'm talking about. All you Europeans that don't know what's going on, grab an American over 30, doesn't matter which one, and he'll school you on it.

In keeping with that, I've decided to make a list of 40 songs from the 80s. Ten years in the decade, so that's 4 songs in each year. Not 8 in one, 5 in another, and 2 in a couple others. Exactly four per year.

Another rule:

Each artist can only be used ONCE each year. This makes it difficult. For instance, can't use both Thriller and Beat It by Michael Jackson; have to choose between them.

These aren't necessarily the most popular songs (though I did list some just by how "huge" they were, even though they aren't my favorites; have to give the devil's due sometimes), only MY personal favorites.

MAJOR RULE:

Please, for the love of God, DO NOT IMBED YOUTUBE VIDEOS in this thread; that kills people's computers. 40 imbedded videos would lock up some of our computers like a seized engine. If you make a list, please, please, PLEASE just post the links, not imbedded video. Thanks.

Now, enough talk. Let me present my "nominees", as it were:

3. The Other Side - Aerosmith http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkGfPrst29Y
4. Youth Gone Wild - Skid Row http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6WhV5gWjJE

I was kind of limited, in that I only listed songs that had the original videos for them (not youtube user-created stuff). But that's just my personal preference.

And that's my own "Top 40". Keep your feet on the ground, reach for the stars, and all that kind of shit.

Wow, this is going to be a hell of a cool thread. 80's music is some of the best EVER -- and I certainly remember listening to Casey Kasem. I always got a kick out of the sappy stories/dedications from people.

"Dear Casey, my ex-friend and I grew up in the same town and were best friends for 15 years when she moved away. Last year our favorite childhood song came on and it made me think about her for the first time in several years since she moved. I decided to look her up and give her a call that same evening to find out that the evening before she was in a terrible car-wreck. What are the odds of this happening and my coming back into her life as this took place? Could you please dedicate "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel to her in hopes that she will soon recover." -- and just completely strange things like this that were a regular trademark of that show.

I'll definitely have to come up with a list as it shouldn't be too difficult for me with my love for all things 80's. I'll post here after I have an opportunity to compile it. Excellent thread, SRP.

Men At Work - Down Under

Almost, almost, thiscloserighthere included this one. Came down to this and Stray Cats. There was a time when you couldn't go an hour without hearing both of them.

Also like Vacation, but with only 4 slots open, and a deep lineup in 82, it didn't stand a chance. Human League was another victim of limited space.

Devo - Beautiful World... best song ever

Ever? That's your favorite? I had no idea.

Anyway, here's a link for it, so everyone else can hear it:

1981: Beautiful World - Devo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56u6g0POvo0

And I avoided covers for my list, but if I had included them, Pat Benatar laid down an absolutely wicked version of The Beatles' Helter Skelter in 1981.

No actual "MTV" video for it, but here:
