This could be more dangerous than nukes in a way. I've always thought if you wanted to bring about end times all that you would have to do is knock out the electricity.
Yes, people are very civilized when things are going well. However, as we saw with katrina, a fascinating case in human behavior by the way, when basic things are taken away they revert to their true nature. :dead:

Weird, I thought I'd heard that the predicted solar flare activity wasn't supposed to be worse than the uptick we saw a few years back.

We like to think we have things all figured out but the universe in constantly in flux, so is technology.
Apparently they're getting different readings now. What's disturbing though is that you can tell people something is coming and you think they would prepare for it right?
Instead, they wait till' the last minute, they're caught unprepared and then the gov't has to swoop in and save them.
Problem is, with potentially all forms of communication being down, no one is going to be coming for you.

Funny thing is, I'm just reading this book on the 'History of the End of the World' which is more like several brief surveys of eschatological / apocalyptic crazes and the social and historical issues surrounding their genesis. It mentions specifically how solar flare activity, though predicted to be high around 2012, doesn't look like it's going to be worse than what we've seen in the last few upswings.
This sounds like scientists cashing in on current crazes to secure continued funding, which is nothing new, but I know there's some people on the boards who know a ton more about solar flares etc., so it'd be cool to hear what they have to say.

True.
I would definitely have to defer to their expertise on this subject.
But if not this you would think it would be something else.
There hasn't been an extinction level event in quite some time. The lack of one is what has allowed us to progress as far as we have.
One would hope preparations are being made to atleast keep the knowledge we have accumulated up until this point safe so that if there's anyone left to rebuild we're not back in the stone age.
That's probably what happened to Atlantis. :shifty:

You know what though, if I planned for every eventuality that science or lore or religion has foretold, I'd be living underground ala that Brendan Fraiser movie...
I'd rather just live it out as naturally as possible because the axe can fall in any direction and we can't predict it..
