Signs you have seen entirely too many zombie films…

Music: -- Whenever you see a helicopter flying outside you immediately have the theme to “DAWN” stuck in your head. -- When you’re in the mall you have “The Gonk” stuck in your head and start humming along to it.

Safety: -- Anywhere you go you always attempt to determine how secure you would be in case zombies were to attack. -- You often consider “apocalypse” plans for “when it eventually happens”, sometimes extremely intricate and in-depth, and are surprised when other people think you’re silly for not making their own plans for it.

Dialogue: -- You can recite, verbatim, long lines of dialogue from the films. And it doesn’t take much to set you off either. When someone says “salad” or “cellar” or “vacation” or “responsibility” you automatically recite the line of dialogue in your head if not out loud.

Social Activity: -- You come to places like HPotD on a regular basis and discuss zombie/horror films regularly (if not daily) and take serious positions on why shamblers and/or sprinters are better/worse than the other group. -- When you hear the "This is a test of the emergency broadcasting system" message on the radio or television you start thinking: "Hmm..." and wonder for a moment about it. -- A life goal for you has always been to be in a Romero film as a zombie and hang out with the man one day.

Okay folks, there are a ton more other than these. Please add to the list!

This is a big one for me. I try to stay away from the mall, but every time I have to go there The Gonk starts up in my head.

Hey Mike, it feels good to know that I'm not the only one!

I feel the same way in attempting to stay away from malls (I hate people and despise being in the masses) but from time to time it has to be done.

I've never understood the logic of that scene in the film. "Oh God, there's a ton of zombies around and they want to eat us! I better check my blood pressure!"

Yeah, but the pie fight is funny. You couldn't eat the pies without getting sick (they are easily months old) but you could throw them at zombies for a good laugh. The sombrero is funny too. Checking blood pressure with flesh eating zombies around though? Eh... maybe the guy was a little "slow"?

IMO, the point of the blood pressure scene is to show how comfortable they've allowed themselves to become in the presence the zombies.

"That's a professional army." "Looks like they've been surving on the road all through this thing."

To them, the zombies weren't a threat anymore. So this dumbass thought he would be fine to check his blood pressure.

LOL

I'm not following that logic. Wasn't the mall in full blown zombie madness when he dropped his weapon and decided to use the machine? It's very non sequitur but I like the scene a lot.

I have an escape plan for all places I frequent (home, job, bars, clubs, concert venues). A few for some, in case I get trapped in.

Also I have spend many hours just wandering Monroeville Mall. One store actually has a zombie museum in it, which is neat. Lots of models and movie posters and what not. Sucks for me, though. I live in the North Hills of Pittsburgh and getting over that way can be a fucking bitch sometimes, with traffic.

EDIT: Forgot to add this story. At a party in Evans City one I got HAMMERED and started wandering around looking for all the places Night was shot in.

I think the topic should be Signs you haven't seen enough zombie films if you HAVEN'T done these things.

I always check the mall for layout.
I always hear the Gonk in my head.
I always assess supplies of anyplace that appears defensible.
I note areas of town with defensible barriers (rivers, buildings, fences).

I'll add one no one has mentioned yet. I went around and found the locations of nearby cave storage. Which is not to say I think caves are a good idea. But I just... you know... heck, if I have to explain it then you haven't seen enough zombie films.

You lucky dog. Hey, did the Monroeville Mall have a theatre in it or beside it (strip area?) when the film was originally released? Yes, I'm quoting myself. I actually was really curious about this and so I pulled a wikipedia on the Monroeville Mall as we all know that wikipedia never lies. This is a snippet from the wikipedia article:

With Monroeville Mall fully operational, the areas surrounding the mall began to develop as well. Outparcels such as a movie theater, a Marriott hotel, a freestanding Montgomery Ward store, and a number of retailers, auto service centers and restaurants were subsequentially built during the 1970s.

Does anyone know the history of the Monroeville Mall area to confirm if this theatre was there in '78? I'm honestly interested in whether or not the film was shown at this theatre if it was there then. My Lord, they could have made a TON from promoting the film at this theatre if they did show it there.

Just imagine being able to see the film in the theatre right beside the mall and then after its over being able to take a stroll over to the mall where it was made. It would have been an amazing first date, I tell ya! Take your girl not only to see the film but to see where the film was made too. Try to top that for a first date! :)

Well, it's not the Monroeville Mall, but back when Dawn was released, they showed it at the Southridge Mall Cinema as part of their Midnight Movie schedule (also included Rocky Horror & Pink Floyd's The Wall --3-plex, dontchaknow) Shoot, just walking past the poster was my first exposure to the existance of Dawn of the Dead.

(The line about "No room left in Hell" freaked my 7-year-old Catholic shit OUT. I knew then, I had to see it someday...)

At the time, the mall uncannilly resembled the Monroeville Mall. Probably just how they designed these things in the 70's.

I can only imagine folks getting out of the show, wandering to their cars in a haze of altered conciousness (it was the 70's -- everybody was on quaaludes, whatever the hell those were)

I'd post pics to prove it, but I can't find any online from that era.

The cinema got turned into a food court in the 90's...

I always felt comfortable when I was stationed in Guam. A good portion of those buildings (including where I lived, and where I worked), were designed to withstand massive typhoons. When I saw those cemet structures with heavy duty doors and metal typhoon shutters for windows, my first thought was that people would be safe holding up in their residents or work areas here.

The tourist strip on the other hand would be screwed. Too much foot traffic, too easily congested. The people who lived or were stuck in that village wouldn't have a chance.
