So, has anyone had an opportunity to see this brilliant work of film-making genius yet?

Yet again it's time for a new "Twilight" film so we can see hunky guys running around with their shirt off (abs! abs! abs!) and some wonderful romance scenes. I know everyone here is extremely excited and looking forward to seeing this absolute gem of movie-making and I'm certainly looking forward to all the reviews that will be presented here.

I know I can't wait to watch this film! Will Team Jacob win over Team Edward or will tragedy strike? I know, like the rest of you, I can barely hold back my excitement! No doubt, this is going to be not only the film of the summer but the film of the year as well just like the first two "Twilight" films were two of the best (and scary!) horror films ever created as well. I know I celebrate every opportunity watching both of the released films on Blu-Ray as often as possible.

Ah, and that Robert Pattison and Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart! Aren't they just amazing actors? Man, everyone in these films from Dakota Fanning to the extras are just pure talent. The books are just so great and I've gone through five copies of all of them from reading them non-stop. That Stephenie Meyer is an amazing author! She certainly beats Anne Rice or any other vampire writer out there without a doubt.

Anyway, I'm soooo excited to see "Twilight: Eclipse" even though I know I'll be bummed about having to wait in a line to go see it. But, what can you do? It's worth waiting in a line with all the other fantastic fans to see this great work!

Let me know your thoughts on this greatest series of films ever as well and we can show our appreciation for Ms. Meyer and her great work as well as showing our appreciation for the films!

Yah, Dakota is a talented young lady, though I wasn't happy with her screaming kid role in Spielberg's War of The Worlds, but that was the part as written. She also did some voice work for a Miyazaki anime film, My Neighbor Totoro, along with her sister Elle who played ( not so coincidentally. ) sisters that encounter a Nature spirit.
She kicked major ass in Man on Fire, however.

As for Twilight and that whole cult, Man, how the Vampire has fallen.
I'd gone along for the ride with them since I first picked up Dracula as a kid. I even didn't mind 30 Days of Night, because at least those bad boys were trying (despite being the Forrest Gumps of the Undead. )but Edward and Crew make Lestat and that whiny Anne Rice bunch look butch by comparision.
After giving the first film a look-see, the rest seem equally anemic.

I havent actually seen any of the films, but I can tell that because certain people I know like them, that I definitely wont. I like my vampire stories creepy and sinister, not Dawsons creek with vampires. Theres that TV series "true blood" on at the moment as well which is more of the same crap!

I watched an episode though and as usual all cast members were extremely good looking & not far out of their teens, with crap vampires and lots of sex scenes, still seemed pretty much a teeny bopper show for the lost/heroes/flashforward crowd

Your handle is right on, as I'm trying to figure out the connection between Teen Vamp Flicks and the shows you mentioned.
While hardly Teen Fodder, True Blood is definitely in the touchy feely camp, albeit more Southern Gothic. Anna Paquin is sporting a nice little bod, I like that. Still not enough to hook me.

The show "The Vampire Diaries" would have to be the best from the lot of "Twilight"/"True Blood" etc. teen vampire things. It actually has an intelligent writing staff that isn't afraid to be tongue-in-cheek (or fang-in-cheek I should say). It's worth watching.

I become ill when I see people comparing Stephenie Meyer to Anne Rice. Anne is probably one of the most talented horror writers of all time and her work is amazing. I'd go as far as saying the novel "The Vampire Lestat" is probably one of the finest (if not finest) vampire novel ever written. Stephenie Meyer reminds me of young adult writers like "Goosebumps" from back in the early 90's. You can't compare them.

The whole "Twilight" thing is a terrible fad that should soon die. There's nothing wrong with a film/series being targeted at younger females if it's done RIGHT and is compelling story-telling. The "Twilight" series is neither. Stephen King has even gone so far as calling Stephenie Meyer: "A terrible writer" and he almost never publicly bad-mouth's anyone.

I'll never understand why most guys take this Twilight shit so personally. It's a movie....you're not required to view it. And if you do see it and don't like it - just move on rather than complaining every time a sequel is released.

Then you get the complaint of "oh those movies ruin the vampire and werewolf genres!". Bullshit. Those genres have had so many bad entries, there's nothing else that can ruin it any further.

Let the girls have their "dreamy, sparkly" vampires. I mean....what good would complaining do, anyway? Regardless of masses of men hating the films, they're still going to make serious money from the tweens. Besides, there are only 1 or 2 films left and it will all be over.

I think Kevin Smith nailed it. Twilight is Star Wars for girls. We could go round-and-round about how "star wars was better!", but everyone knows those films aren't for everyone either. Just as some older guys were seeing star wars as an outlandish and childish space fantasy, similar things could be said for Twilight.

Turn that finger around for a minute. We discuss zombie films on a daily basis. Most of which, are AWFUL. You think everyone's going to agree with that? We're in the same boat as the twilighters.

Because giving it a pass is tantamount to making excuses. This crap has been diluting the genre of HORROR MOVIES & TELEVISION since the retardation known as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

People made excuses for it then, now look where it's gotten us. Horror is supposed to be scary, not corporate drivel manufactured for the tween mentality.

If you watched and enjoyed Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you are a tool and it's you're fault that contemporary "horror" films & television suck ass.

Hey J.,

Have you ever met a girl that didn't take an opportunity to rip apart "stupid guy movies" like Romero's Holy Trilogy or the Holy "Star Wars" trilogy? I'm just releasing some steam man, that's all. These "Twilight" films are just so terrible I can't help but comment on their suckiness. Girls do the same about attacking our 'guy' films we love, it's only fitting I bitch/whine about the terrible nature of their beloved "Twilight" shit.

The only thing that really gets under my skin (see above) is when idiots mistake Stephenie Meyer as anything other than an amateur young-adult author. Anyone who compares her writing to Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, or actual talented ADULT horror novelists just upsets me.

He's passionate with what he's passionate about and he always seems to make some good points/posts. He does, occasionally, also add quite a bit to the conversation by pointing out some fascinating thoughts into it that others haven't thought about. An ill-conceived, poorly written and implemented character hardly makes Land a teen-oriented film, in and of itself. Dawn 04 had very little internal plot consistency, expected the watcher to not be bothered by the individuals joking about and acting like stock, every day characters in the midst of a world-ending scenario, crappy youth-oriented music, hot young plastic actors and actresses and all the requisite tropes of a Fridaynight teen horror film.

Y'know, one of the things that I brought up to my wife (who is a major Twilight fan, god help her) is this: The whole vampire thing was based on Vlad "The Impailer" Tepish - so how did we get from some sicko motherfucker that used to stick hundreds or thousands of people on stakes to this lovey-dovey romantic bullshit which is used to represent vampires now? I want to see throats torn out, people getting slaughtered, not sparkly-skinned freaks who woo teenagers.. I mean, WTF?!

Well, Dracula was based on Vlad the Impailer. . . .but the vampyre myth goes back quite a bit before that.

Stephen King has even gone so far as calling Stephenie Meyer: "A terrible writer" and he almost never publicly bad-mouth's anyone.

j.p.

It was a lady friend who pushed Rices erotic books on me, one trilogy which was a very adult take on the Sleeping Beauty myth. This series put most porn fantasies we guys can have to shame. She also did Exit To Eden, which was a good book but a God Awful movie. Dana Delany in fetish gear was the only saving grace.

"Jim" who? Of course I intentionally come off as an "absolute jack-ass." What's the matter with you? It's the only sort of discourse the absolute jack-asses here can understand.

Eventually, they'll just skulk away and be forced to ignore the unfettered chaos. Which reminds me...

No, but you're claiming it all started with Buffy. I'm just saying that there were awful vampire films long before that...

There was awful everything prior to Buffy, but at the very least we didn't have Beverly Hills 90210 with vampires. Buffy created that asinine trend which small-minded audiences made popular and now congrats, idiots, you've got Twilight.

You can't afford to act high and mighty over Twilight if you make excuses for pedestrian entertainment like Buffy.

If an outsider was to read this, they'd INSTANTLY know you were bullshitting because of this line:

Touche, good sir. That is a bold assumption on my behalf.

I'd say that most of the Twilighters would just look at you like: "Who?" if you mention Anne Rice and the rest of them would dismiss her as just being less of a writer because she's not their beloved and venerated Stephenie Meyer. :)

And oh my God the fan fiction that must've come from this rubbish is most probably unreadable - imagine a generation of writers who've only read Stephanie Meyer books. Christ.

One thing I loved about Anne Rice was one of her latest books was absolutely trounced on Amazon by her fans - and she used her account to write a massive response justifying her actions and intentions for characters like Lestat etc - I say latest books, this happened at least 7 years ago - but I remember the moment very well, hilarious.

Buffy The Series was Joss Whedons attempt to rescue his baby from the broad uneven farce of a film it had devolved into.
He didn't diss the movie entirely, using it to spring board the TV show ( which was set not long after. )
As Neil points out, the show was largely sharp and on point. That was so long as Joss was involved. We had Female Empowerment for the ladies (the topic of many a college thesis)and we guys had both Xander Harris and Rupert Giles to add the necessary male commentary.
But when Joss went off to work on Firefly, his coproducer/writer ( Marti Noxon ) nearly ruined the show by delving into Buffy banging Spike, Willow becoming a magick addict, and generally crashing every major character on the show.
Fortunately Joss was able to turn it around in time for a slam bang series finale which created a new paradigm for future Slayer mythology.

And too bad for Whedon that he failed miserably. Kristy Swanson is way hotter than Sarah Michelle Geller who is more adept at being a Cover Girl than an actress. Swanson also realistically passes for a high schooler, as opposed to that wrinkled fruitcake posing behind her.

For clarification, what pieces/types of entertainment don't you think of as crap, Shootem'? You seem to dislike a lot of things. Is it just GAR that passes muster?

shootemindehead
17-Jul-2010, 01:46 AM
Yep, I dislike a lot of things. Because a lot of things aren't very likable and actually a lot of GAR's stuff is rubbish too. :D Outside of his Living dead material, there's really only 'Martin' that is worth re-watching numerous times. Let's be honest, Romero's a hack that struck it lucky with his corpses. But, we're all happy he did so.

I can be very hard to please, no doubt. But, when something is good, I'll sing it's praises.

I can be very forgiving of a lot of things though, if the general ideas are good.

But, far too often, there are no ideas.

I do tend to dislike a lot of TV material, because usually it's dumbed down or watered down in some way for mass consumption. That kind of thing loses me very quickly. I also find most TV and cinema projects throw in un-necessary "humor" or "lightheartedness" into the mix. Attempts at humour for humour's sake and it always falls flat on it's face.

That's why I'm a 'Day of the Dead' kind of chap and not a 'Dawn of the Dead' type. Although the latter is good too. :D

Problem is when I do find TV stuff I like, it gets cancelled, like 'Rome' or 'Deadwood'. While shit like 'Buffy' or 'True Blood' drones on and on, long after it should.

Knowing my luck 'The Walking Dead' will be the best thing to hit TV is years...and it'll get cancelled after 1 series.

Or The Buffy Musical could be ... ;) (depending on what you think of musicals in general. )
In my opinion, as Hush was definitely the best, with the gimmick of every person in Sunnydale being rendered mute, The Musical also was the best, with several key plot points deftly drawn out in song.
Amber Benson(Tara ) and Anthony Stewart Head ( Gile ) more than showed their vocal worth while James Marsters (Spike ) rocked it out as well.
Later I was watching some celeb homage to The Rocky Horror Picture Show( a sorta casual sing along ) when who should show up to sing a number or two but Amber and Anthony.

After 7 seasons of screwing around, the audience should expect at least several decent episodes. Even the best television series don't always receive that luxury, but then you're probably not old enough to remember Millennium and American Gothic.

Which horror films and tv programs aren't largely drama-based? Without a solid drama, what have you got, smart guy?

Of all people -- you, the guy that started this thread complaining about Twilight should realize that it's never about what the audience classifies as "horror." It's about what the Hollywood big-wigs classify as "horror."

In the 1970s, no major studio would finance a horror film until Alien struck gold. You can argue that Alien isn't "horror," either, but that won't change the fact it's responsible for spawning a ton of great horror films. Films made for adults.

Unfortunately, the studios now see bankable "horror" films as Twilight. Fodder made for the tween mentality. So where do you think that silly idea came from? Hello? Are we learning yet?
