View Full Version : Utterly Confused?

I had written up a huge..well, essay almost about how much things have changed around here in 11 years and was almost finished when I realized that I was writing it for myself, not for anybody else.

What I mean by that is the things I talking about were a little sad..remembering old friends I met here, great discussions about fiction and the undead that went on WAY too late into the night, when work was just a few hours away.

The games and general discussion sections seem to be putting right along, but fiction is dead..just absolutely dead..

And ya know, that really bums me out..when I first came here, I spent hours and hours and hours of my summer just reading the fiction. I literally read every single story because I couldn't believe that a site like this even existed.

I made my own contributions, read and rated others, worked with friends to polish stories and have little contests..I miss that, alot.

I've gone back through the archives, and the Land/Day timeline thread just blew me away. I wish I hadn't missed out on that. It was also unique in that I was able to see an almost passing of the flame, from the old guard, to alot of you new guys.

It was really kinda cool.

Now, in an effort to keep this Dead section relevant, I wish to play a little catch up..I hope you'll entertain me in this.

I recently came across an edit of Dawn that had every available scene spliced into one long movie. For some reason, I wish the Goblin soundtrack hadn't been the one on there. *shrug*

Anybody know of a disc that contains any or all of the commentaries for and of the films that can be synched up with the movie separately? I really wish I could hear the Savini/Stavrakis version.

Is there any appreciation out there for Night '90, or am I still kind of on the outside fence on that one?

As The Walking Dead inches closer, is anybody else wondering if we may get a series of collectibles? Yes, I admit it, I still have an action figure collection, I couldn't bring myself to throw away all my old stuff and would really like to have some of the characters in plastic.

Does anyone own any of The Dead series from Sideshow? If so, are they worth the pricetag?

Unemployment sucks. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

If someone could bring me up to speed on the shoutbox chicanery and random musings, that'd be awesome.

On the one hand I don't want to come across as needy and needing acceptance, but I also don't want to step on toes or piss somebody off retreading an issue from a thread that's been locked down or a horse that's been beaten. I know the search function is there and I'm doing my best to play catch up with the archives.

Anyway, I always keep a tab of HPOTD open on my laptop so I can keep abreast of anything interesting that comes down the pipe.

Hope this post wasn't annoying and/or stupid, I just wanted to kind of give an explanation on why I want to take part in conversations and not have somebody think I'm some johnny come lately with alot of greek salad opinions. I genuinely love this site and all the friends I've made here and all the great info that I've gotten.

Woah..now THAT was weird..

Dude, by and large the zombie genre is never gonna get more than half dead nowadays. no pun intended.
It is a fanbase that denies or outright lashes out at change and therefore its the only big movie monster where it will stay the same for decades, by and large.
Theres only so many ways you can tell a generic zombie story and its not really going to change.
I suppose its in part due to a sizeable number of the audience, the isolationist survival guy who has slightly set in his ways ideals and fears change. Thats not many of the regular members here, but a LOT of the audiences. They won't allow change. So all can get is stagnation with the occasional bubble of something resembling the good coming to the surface every so often.

As for the fiction section....start using it. That's the only way to get it back to the way you like it. I for one couldn't care less about that section, but if you want it to make a come back - get in there and make it happen.

Whoah, Gilead, that's a ton of stuff you have going on there in your stream-of-consciousness post. Were you drunk when you posted it? I'm generally drunk when I post quite a few of my ramblings too.

Alot of the folks here are "old guard" as well. I was fairly active here when it was *NEW* even before the message board back around 97-98. When I was 16 I started posting atrociously awful fiction contributions here (which I refuse to go back and look at or advertise as they are just bad). In fact, some of my contributions are the earliest here at the site. This was back when HPotD was on the old fozznet.uk server -- so that's showing my cards. I remember for awhile that Homepage was down for about a 6 month period and there was a site up called "Homepageofthedeadrefugees" where there were links to all the old fiction contributions before coming back again (check with Neil on this, I'm not for certain if this was due to a hacker attack or what?).

I stayed in touch with quite a few of the "old guard" members for awhile but due to time and other things have lost track of most of them. I only become "active" once again here in the last year or so and I certainly haven't regretted it. Yes, I agree that this is a difference place than it was 12-13 years ago (Good Lord, I'm dating myself now!).

There are probably quite a few of the older folks still around even if in a "lurker" status now. Time changes people and people come and go regularly -- some of us that were gone for awhile end up returning again in some capacity or another, and sometimes an occasional "newbie" comes here and joins our ranks (although this seems not to happen as often as it used to be -- most of us that post regularly here have been around for awhile).

Anyway, I think HPotD is more of a "Family" site now. No, I don't mean content-wise but as more of a statement about the boards. Those of us that are here generally have the message boards up all day and stay in contact with others through here regularly. For some newbies this is intimidating -- but never feel as if you can't jump right into a conversation or discussion here.

You're not alone at all. I've always loved 90 (Still probably prefer the original JUST SLIGHTLY). I know there are a FEW that don't like it, but I've always thought it was generally well regarded...?

It is what it is. No rhyme or reason.;)

I'd rather watch Night 90 than the original...brilliant remake, brilliant film.

Oh, the thing that really drew me to this site when I discovered it (via a SEGA Dreamcast, my first internet tool) was the fiction section...I was blown away by the quantity and quality of the stories on offer. This is the first site who's "guest book" I ever left a message on. :)

My only gripe now is the limit on reading so many at a time now...I could sit here and read them all night when I first found the site. the restrictions sort of put me off visiting the fiction section all together to be honest. :(

+1

Once the change was made, I never bothered to go back.

Ditto with Moon and Legion, with the change to only so many reads I completely stopped visiting the fiction section.

I'm with you guys. I loved reading the fiction section and would frequently rate the stories and leave some feedback messages (positive stuff, I see no reason to be negative to any of the authors).

I had spent many a night reading through the stories back in '99. The restrictions that are in place now have kind of weened me from going to the fiction section as much.

I remember that my first contact with this site used to be the fiction section as well. That was before it had this snazzy design it has now. It was more basic, but still I remember staying up late many a-night and just reading contribution after contribution. After the restriction was put into place, I remember being more cautious with which contributions I read, which meant I missed out on alot. Oh well...

I hardly ever go there anymore. I think I've maybe checked it out once the last two years or so. I might head on back over there sometime, tho. For old times sake.

shit i forgot about the restrictions its been so long. I honestly got tired of them when it got flooded with survival nut gun porn just teetering on the border of "and then i shoved the gleaming pistol barrel up my assehole like fist of the north star".

Naturally you assume i am being my normal, flippant, jokey self. But i really am not. some of it bordered on a vile mix betwixt weapon fetishism and s and m erotica.

No thanks guy, no thanks.

Yepp. There was a time when the forum and fiction designs weren't as sleek as they are now.

Yup, I know exactly what you mean..I enjoy and own firearms myself, but I was never ever interested in survivors who were all prepared and ready for the fall..I had characters like that in my first fic I posted here and I instantly regretted it..oh guh, and don't get me started on chainsaws.

I also know what you mean about the fiction restrictions..I mean I understand the necessity of it and all, but after that I never bothered with it anymore. I didn't want to use up reads separating wheat from chaff and miss out on something that may have been good because I couldn't access anymore for a week.

On an unrelated note, if anybody can tell me how to throw up some spoiler tags, I'd be appreciative.

You type the following, minus the quotes: ["spoiler"]Spoilage type stuff goes inside the brackets["/spoiler"]

I agree with the many others sharing fond memories of the fiction section in the "good old days." I think '99 is when I first came here, just devouring the stories. I came for the stories, stayed for the community. Haven't looked at the stories in quite a while now, and the read limit is a big factor.
