Yeah this is that book that he was payed 3 million upfront to write and reveal the origin of the zombie outbreak that was announced last year... The release date has been shifted around a couple of times and at one point I think I even heard he was backing off of doing it.

This was first mentioned a little over a year ago, in a newspaper article about the rise of zombie literature, around the time Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was being prepped for release, and there has not been much new info since then.

I recall arguments on the forums about the continuity of the proposed book in relation to the films, particularly regarding the fact that the first American zombie rises in San Diego in the book, whereas in Night, no cases were initially reported "west of the Mississippi".

I think it sounds like a pretty exciting concept: his first truly wide-scale examination of the outbreak, unhindered by budget, schedules, censorship and the constraints of the cinematic medium. His answer to World War Z, if you will. I have read some snippets of George's fiction (some time ago, I posted a small fragment from an unfinished zombie short story he had on his web site back in the late-90s/early-00s) and he's a genuinely good writer. In fact, now that I think about it, wasn't there some talk of something very similar to this book way back when georgearomero.com was still going strong? I might be wrong, and I can't check right now, but maybe someone could stick that url into archive.org's wayback machine and check that out for us.

I also seem to remember reading an interview with Romero, just prior to the release of Survival, in which the matter of the novel was raised. If I'm recalling correctly, he seemed to intimate that the book was a still-unfinished "back burner" project with no set completion or release date, in spite of what publishers might promise.

Here's hoping it happens, though!

I've heard too many different things on this.

Things George has said in the last four months;

1. He is writing it, and joked about Zombies defecating.

2. He is writing it, and says "Don't believe Amazon for synopsis or release dates."

3. It is on the backburner.

It's been mentioned one way or another in interviews. Just look at any of the interviews in the last six months. I would love to read the book, but won't believe it will happen' until I am holding the physical copy in my hand. Let's face it, GAR has put a lot of things on hiatus.

From what I've read, George has agreed to it, but doesn't want to feel boxed in by any impending publisher deadline. So he's taking his time crafting it. I like this approach - just wish he had also applied it to his last two zombie flicks.
