The third 'Bill & Ted' movie is currently being written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon.

Most excellent news! Actor Alex Winter has confirmed to MTV.com that a third "Bill & Ted" movie is officially in the works.

"We kicked around the idea over the years and had always thought if we could make something that was as kind of genuine in spirit as the originals and without falling prey to kind of retro cynicism or something that was unnecessary, it would be worth doing," Winter said of the franchise about two high school students who muddle around the space-time continuum.

"Now the cat's out of the bag, and the truth is that, yeah, we have finally hit upon an idea that we think is pretty great."

The film, currently being written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, will have lofty expectations to live up to the original 1989 cult classic. "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" launched the careers of both Winter (Bill) and Keanu Reeves (Ted), and even inspired an animated series and a '91 sequel, "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey."

The two actors will reportedly return for the film’s third installment, although Winter acknowledged to MTV that picking up their beloved characters after 20 years would require a bit of finesse. One of the obstacles will be moving forward without franchise mainstay George Carlin, who passed away in 2008.

"It's really complicated," Winter told MTV about moving on without Carlin, who played the time traveler Rufus. "He was such a big part of the spirit of the originals, and we've been trying to be clever about making a new one that can handle the Carlin issue."

"It's actually stopped us in the past — why do it without Rufus?" Winter elaborated. "We've been delicate about moving around him."

But still, Winter is optimistic that the film's tone would be in spirit with the original movies and a worthy addition to the franchise, even without a key cast member.

"We don't want to make a cynical 'here's Bill and Ted — you guys are our kids, now YOU guys go be Bill and Ted and the franchise can live for another 25 years!'" Winter told the website. "It's a straight up, what's the funniest and most surprising take on where Bill and Ted would be right now if we stopped back in on them? That's what we're doing."

Now that the matrix is over, Keanu must be desperate for another franchise...

Making this movie without Carlin would be like making Point Break 2 now that Swayze has passed. Just wouldn't be the same...

I love how this article says B&T launched the careers of both actors. What has the blonde guy done since then?

Not a whole lot (but then again, it's not like he's been absent from the scene since B&T), but it looks like he's going to be directing the remake of "The Gate"

I'm curious to see where they take a new B&T movie. Missing Carlin will indeed suck, but I still want to see what B&T are doing "in the now" so-to-speak.

I'm totally up for B&T3. When I first heard the news I was surprised, but totally on board. I hope it gets made. :)

Didn't he clone himself and have his younger clone do Dell Computer commercials? :-P

I've always been a big fan of his role in The Lost Boys, albeit small.

He says they're not doing the typical shit where the series is passed off to new actors, so I say bring it on.

Me too. I've always dug Bill & Ted - sure, they were stupid in a Beavis & Butthead kinda way, but that's what made them funny. :D

I would like to watch the B&T movies. Haven't seen them in YEARS. Hopefully they would still hold up. Off to see if they have a dvd that's worth a purchase...

You can get them on Amazon for super cheap. Pretty sure there's a two-bundle.

Yeah, I just found a nice looking collection. Says it even has a making-of doc and several special features. Anybody own this? Worth the cash or wait for the Blu Ray?

Not sure, bassman. I own "Excellent Adventure" on DVD, but not Bogus Journey because I am sorta waiting for a good BR transfer. *fingers crossed*

It's going to be hard to watch without Carlin to anchor the thing.

"The script they're discussing, by the way, is from Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon - the geniuses behind the first two pictures in the franchise."

EXCELLENT!!

"-Script done? Check. -We love it? Check. -Green light? Working on it!"

One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world. And they haven't done it. So everybody is kind of like: "Where is the song?" The guys have just drifted off into esoterica and lost their rock. And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song, and one future "us" refuses to tell us, and another future "us" blames us for their lives because we didn't write the song, so they're living this terrible life. In one version we're in jail; in another we're at some kind of highway motel and they hate us.
