Having been to Japan for a good period of time in the past, I'm convinced that the reason they offer beer in vending machines is because foreigners need to be completely smashed to understand half of what they do.

What........the.........hell :confused::eek:
I've seen 2 girls 1 cup, I've seen "The Thing", I used to watch Ren & Stimpy, I've seen a calf born inside out & Ive seen a piglet born with no nose & one cyclopic eye without a socket, but I'll be buggered if I've ever seen something as creepy, nonsensical & weird as that! I feel dirty in some way!

Agreed,
If I didn't know better I would honestly believe the Japanese gov't is pumping Mescaline into the water supply. I just don't have any other explanation not only for this video, but the fact that this kind of thing is positively commonplace in their culture. Stuff like this, while weird, isn't what gets me. It's the game shows where they play severe mind-games with 3-5yr olds. Like convincing them zombies are coming to eat them. Stuff their parents are PROUD to be seen putting them through.

::shrugs:: Maybe it's just the vast cultural differences.

Shows where they got the imagination for the things "unit 731" got up to I guess. The Japanese prank shows are hilarious though!

Ah, Funky Forest... takes me back a couple years to one of the early issues of OtakuUSA (remember when they were sold with the physical DVDs? Good times...)
Yep, weird is true. Weird is good. Japan is better. I must go some day, if only because of things like this. Thanks for posting, and reminding me that there is good in the world.

No, it does not.

On a related note, has anyone seen this yet?

Well you have to admit it takes a pretty fucked up imagination to cut someones arms off & sew them where their legs were supposed to be, without anaesthetic....

Or maybe they don't take t.v as serious as other nations?

Yes, there are some vast and undeniable cultural differences - and I will be the first to admit that there is a lot of weirdness in Japanese media that I don't get - but as a Japanese American please forgive me for saying that I find some of the comments posted here a bit ethnocentric.

But that being said, that first video is pretty freaky!

I haven't seen anything that is patently discriminatory in the thread. There are many comments here that state that Japanese culture is weird, and when the topic is centered around Japanese culture your claim that it is a bit ethnocentric is incorrect. It is entirely ethnocentric...just not discriminatory and therefore not actionable. You do not have to agree with my assessment though, so if you feel any particular post is discriminatory then please report the specific posts and the mods and admins will review the issue.

That being said, Japan doesn't have a monopoly on weirdness... I mean look at David Lynch...or German poop porn.

Never did like Japan that much... Sorry, Yojimbo. I'm sure there's parts of Japan that are cool, but pretty much every media-thing that gets shipped out of there is just crap in my opinion.

I once saw a Japanese gameshow where you guessed what people ate by them barfing it up on your blindfolded head. WTF? What is worse is that she cheated by tasting a little when it slid down past her mouth...

It really doesn't take very much imagination at all. All it takes is a lack of empathy. Nothing to do with race, ethnicity or geographical location.

Kaos, thanks for your post and sharing your thoughts. I agree that there was nothing discriminatory in the posts. I don't want anyone to think that I thought that they were being discriminatory, but I just wanted to point out that the posts were ethnocentric, which I guess is a given in most situations when one culture is discussing another culture.

Admittedly, as a 5th generation American I am pretty far removed from Japanese Culture and as such much of the weirdness produced by the Japanese media perplexes me. But at the same time, as an American I would hate for other cultures to formulate their opinions about America based on some of the weirder pieces produced and distributed by American media. I am not saying that folks here are making sweeping assumptions about Japanese Culture based on these videos, mind you, just feel that it would be sad if that occured either way.

And, please folks, do not misunderstand the way this film was received in Japan. Yeah, there is a contingent of Japanese folks who dig weirdness and liked this movie, but there were also many consumers in Japan that hated this movie and found it intolerably weird and disturbing. Please do not take this movie out of context and think that it is indicative of the majority of Japanese culture or that the Japanese, as a whole, relate in any way to this movie.

I am sorry to hear this EvilNed, and I don't hold this against you - you are a decent fellow and and cool dude. Your statement, however, indicates that you don't like Japan very much because you feel that the media shipped out of there is pretty much crap. This is exactly why it makes me cringe everytime I see folks focusing on the weirdest of the weird that is produced in Japan, just as I cringe when I think of other cultures focusing on Bumfight or Jackass from America.

Granted there is a lot of weirdness in Japanese Media and culture - but it is indeed unfortunate that these weird elements are very easy things on which to focus and when one knows very little about a Japanese Culture it is very easy for these elements to color your judgment about the entire culture.

Agreed! Inhumanity is not specific to the Japanese. While many of the things done during WWII by specific Japanese weirdos were quite horrific, please do not think that this is indicative of Japanese Culture, in the same way that Mengele is not the posterchild of German Culture and in the same way that the inhuman syphillis experiments in Guatamala and Tuskegee sanctioned by the US Goverment are not indicative of the culture of Americans. Jeffrey Dahmer and Richard Ramirez are not representative of America, Armin Mewies not representative of Germany, Michel Fourniret does not represent the culture of France, regardless of the media coverage that they all received. Specific and horrific acts of inhumanity can be found cross culturally.
