View Full Version : Voyager near Solar System's edge

Voyager 1, the most distant spacecraft from Earth, has reached a new milestone in its quest to leave the Solar System.

Now 17.4bn km (10.8bn miles) from home, the veteran probe has detected a distinct change in the flow of particles that surround it.

These particles, which emanate from the Sun, are no longer travelling outwards but are moving sideways.

It means Voyager must be very close to making the jump to interstellar space - the space between the stars.

Simply amazing...so far out, yet such a small measure of distance in the grand scheme of things. These stories always fill me with a mixture of hope and futility...and a little bit of pride that we are at least having a go!

Godspeed!

I still cannot believe those stupid scientists placed certain info about us and the location of our planet inside Voyager.

I'm pretty sure we have been doing that since the advent of radio. :)

If any hostile alien out there are looking for potential rivals to annihilate or races to inslave/destroy/use as food, they'll most likely have the means to find us anyway.

Hell, maybe they will be kindly folk..."look at this slow-ass probe they've sent out, lets show them where the Stargates are or chuck a few hyperdrives their way"

I always thought that was a dinner invitation waiting to happen.

So let's get this straight. We're going to give what is in all likelyhood a more techno logically advanced civilization than ours directions on where to get 7 billion slaves. (if we're lucky)

Nice going NASA.

Why wouldn't we think that a race more advanced than ours would look at us as we look at animals? As tools to their own ends or food supply?

Why would they come and conquer us? The same reason humans do things. Because they can. Maybe it'll be good for our race as a whole. It'll give us perspective on how we act when we're the dominant race.

Guys, if they find Voyager within the next couple of thousand years...they are already in our front garden and know exactly where we are.

Stop being wusses...we all saw the classic Twilight Zone episode "to serve man", but we have to let that go...

Anyway, I hold out the hope that at worst, we would be press ganged into serving in some kind of awesome imperial style navy with star destroyers and other cool shit.

well then try this one on for size:

a message was sent to gliese 581 containing 501 messages and greetings from earth. the gliese 581 system has six planets, two of which (gliese 581d & 581 e) lie in the habitable zone. gliese 581 d is on the outer edge of the zone (like mars in our system) and 581-e is right smack in the middle (like earth). gliese 581-e is only about 1.9 times the size of earth. gliese 581 is 20.3 light years from earth.

As long as I don't have to wear those gay start fleet unis. (Not that there's anything wrong with that). ;)

And what better time to break these out!?! :D

Welcome to HPOTD. ;)

All Trekkin' aside, what's the turnaround on the Voyager signal?

Asuming we find something out there, how long until we know?

The human adventure is just beginning...

WHEN we discover intelligent life out there it will be the single biggest event in human history.

So much of our belief system and morals are predicated around that there is just us, we ae the supreme beings and we are to do with our surroundings as we wish.

Such is the right of the master of the domain.

But what if there are other beings that believe this as well?

Why does everyone assume whatever kind of beings we do come in contact with (if that ever happens) are going to be "more intelligent" than us? What happens if we end up discovering a planet of completely retarded aliens that eat their own dung?

It could happen.

Currently 16 hours each way.

Oh, Lou, if we find "planet of the retards", it will be ripe for oil/mineral/resource rape, as they won't have thought of it, Hell, that would actually be really good, we'd soon see massive political will to get space exploration going properly (And if some aliens have to be cheated out of their rightful legacy and homeland for that to happen, well, it wouldn't be the first time we've done that sort of thing would it...).

The universe is either 6,000 or several several billion years old. The concept that any alien life form is even near to being the same level of advancement of us is insanely small. They are either going to be microbial, or god like and Omnipotent. Either way, I highly doubt they would care about the Voyager probe or things like that.

What makes you see this in such black and white terms? If the universe is old and teeming with life, there could easily be civilisations at all stages of development...

I'm also sure that any civilisation would be interested in an alien probe turning up in it's space...curiosity is probably one of the single most important driving factors for any race that drags itself out of the mud and reaches for the stars.

Cooooool, I was wondering when it was going to happen. Can it not still send images back?
I'm wondering if it will even make it out of the bubble.
What if we're trapped?!?!?

If we do discover life its more likely to be bacterial or insect or some non-sentient plant life or something...The idea that we're gonna meet hostile aliens is just a throwback from too many sci fi movies - the truth is that probe will NOT discover other life and neither will us - at least definitely not in the form of space travelling alien superbeings.

So many things have to happen for us to meet "them" - for instance "their" evolutionary process needs to be exactly in line with ours, their species will need to overcome all the things we've overcome and be top of a food chain, and they need to be within a reachable distance for their "technology" to reach us, and even if all that was met - they'd need to go to a very specific point in space to find planet Earth - and there's a lot of space out there. So completely unlikely.

Everyone assumes that any alien race we encounter will be technologically superior and malevolent. I think, if anything, history has shown that humanity is very capable of being sinister, back stabbing, manipulative, and outright evil in its dealing with its OWN kind.

Imagine the qualities dealing with an alien (literal non-human) race could bring out in us!
