View Full Version : Started Using CHANTIX to quit smoking

I am on Day 3 of taking CHANTIX so far, nothing has changed, but they say it takes a full week for it to begin to kick. Also, due to reports of people becoming unhinged I apologize in advance if I do stupid shit... I mean I already do stupid shit, but I mean in reference as to what is beyond my normal stupid shit

Cold Turkey is the way to go, imho.

You know me from the forums Bassman, trust me... I need drugs to aid in the craziness. Cold Turkey will just cause a mass murder to occur.

It's different for everyone I suppose. But i've seen people try the patches, gum, drugs, and everything else. At some point or another they just end up smoking while still doing the stuff that's supposed to "curve" you off of it. IMHO, there is no curve. I tried winging myself off and it just didn't work. The best thing to do is drop it at once, deal with the withdrawals, and hope for the best. If you're really determined, you'll be back to a somewhat normal state withing a week or two.

Again...in my experiences, anyway. It may not be for everyone. Just imho...drugs don't work. Get it out of your system and be done with it.

better view on it- use the fag money on something else instead- buy a bunch of cheap blu rays or videogames or something to distract you and keep you from spending that money on cigs.

good luck, deej! it's a tough habit to break (still burn a few socially myself from time to time), but one you'll be glad you dropped once you're in the clear.

start keeping healthy snacks near you, think of all the ways quitting will be good for you, and like hells said, start a fund to treat yourself to something nice for every big milestone (1-month, 2-months, 6-months smoke free) using the $$$$ you'd normally spend on cancer sticks.

But didn't someone on chantix commit murder last year

In any event, good luck. I visited my parents over the weekend and my Dad is talking about having to pick out a portable oxygen supply over the coming year, as he can't make it from the driveway up the stairs and into the house without needing 10 minutes to recover, but that's what 60 years of smoking can do to you.

Seriously, best of luck. This can really help keeping additional strain off your heart, Gary, but I know you already know that, so just seriously good luck with it!

I dont know how I've never taken smoking up full time, I enjoy a few smokes when I'm out on the beer, but other than that I dont touch them! I dont even crave them during the week, its just a saturday night thing if I'm out! I've been like that for about 11 years now! Not that the ones I smoke on a weekend arent harming me of course :shifty:

:stunned:

It was nice knowing you, Dj.

Y'know, after all we talked about in regards to Chantix (and all the horror stories which have been reported), I cannot believe you're starting to use that stuff. It's dangerous, and doesn't belong on the market.

Yes, I know some people may have good stories to tell about Chantix, but if you do the actual reading up on the stuff, this is dangerous shit. For someone who prides themselves on their research before getting involved in something, this scares me dude. And I say this honestly, and as a friend.

*takes 10 steps away from Dj and keeps his distance*

BTW: bassman is correct, if you're gonna quit (and you want to) just do it. You have enough pharmaceuticals to keep your mind off something like nicotine.

But didn't someone on chantix commit murder last year

Not just one, many if you do your research. Again, this is dangerous stuff and should not be taken lightly (and IMO, not taken at all).

Good Luck DJ. I used Wellbutrin/Zyban myself. . and had good luck with that. My wife was on Chantrix, and she is still smoking. . . .I don't think she was ready to quit tho. And that is the most important thing. . . .if you are ready to quit. . . you will. Use whatever you have to use to help you, but the most important thing is to remind yourself of why you are quitting, and to reaffirm your desire to quit to yourself.

And Bass. . . taking Chantrix is still kinda cold turkey. . . .more or less. Chantrix doesn't give you any nicotine, it is just supposed to help change your mindset and give you the willpower to stop.

And Chantrix has shown a great success record so far, so keep up with it DJ. . . and good luck man.

Not heard anything good about that Chantix shit...be careful man.

As for cold turkey, yeah, maybe if you have the iron will of Judge Dredd or whatever, I needed e-cigs to give up, my cold turkey attempts usually amounted to shitty moods and just not smoking for a few days until I folded like a cheap deckchair.

Good luck anyway, Deej, smashing my 20+ a day, two decade+ habbit was (and still is) one of my finest hours (over 14 months without leaving the house smelling like I rolled around in a fucking ashtray before going out now...love it!). :)

Smoking 25 years myself, and the cold turkey thing never worked for me.. it lasted 3 days.

Wellbutrin and the patch got me through 6 weeks... one bad day and boom I lit up like no tomorrow.

This is attempt number 3... so I am bringing out the big guns this time.

If I go crazy and go on e akiller rampage you know it was the CHANTIX, but I doubt that will happen... I am willing myself not to kill anyone.

Damn Lou.....very encouraging.

Keep it up, Gary. In my experience it only got easier. And that was without any help.

I think the hardest part was drinking and being around friends that smoke. Those were the most tempting times. I still occasionally have a smoke when drinking, but it never leads to smoking the next day.

Dude, you know damn well I wish you all the success in the world kicking this habit. I did it, and for 3 years straight (cold turkey). It ain't easy. What concerns me is the fact you are taking Chantix when one tiny bit of research would show you that shit is dangerous - and you usually research the living shit out of everything you ever purchase or get into. What was different about this? Just "any port in a storm" to quit? I can understand that, but it's risky.

I hope it works. I hope it helps and lets you quit smoking. I certainly hope you don't go nuts - but if you do, I'm going to be the first person in line with my rolled-up newspaper swatting you on the nose saying "NO! I TOLD YOU SO! NO!" :D

More or less it was the Any Port IN a Storm path this time around.

Prior to my rather brash removal from work... many ex-smokers used CHANTIX and I did ask around for about a year. None of them seemed unhinged. I asked if they felt different, what kind of side effects if any they experienced... basically I didn't hear anything that alarmed me and out of the 8 at work who used 6 have quit successfully now for 2+ years. Two others went back to smoking.

I have read the online side effects, and other comments by users before I popped the 1st pill. I did my research... including articles on concerns about altered behavior, but after reading it I said... well I already act that way so maybe this will cure it.

Seriously though I checked it out, weighed the risks versus the possible benefits and said, you know what... after Wellbutrin, the patch and a cold turkey stint... this may be my best chance to kick a habit that more or less caused my mothers death, already has me using an inhaler, and god knows what other damage.

I know one thing I can say about CHANTIX... I have really seemed to have lost my appetite. I mean I eat, but the last 2 days I am not eating like I was, so hey if it gets me to trim down the 65_lbs I gained and allows me to quit smoking... I am down with it, if both fail... fuck it... try again later. However, one way or another I am quitting smoking before I hit 40, and if I have lock myself into an insane aslyum to do it... so be it.

So I just did a brief skimming of Chantix's wikipedia page. Am I right in saying that it's bascially a variation of Bupropion, which is an anti-depressant? Isn't it very dangerous to take an anti-depressent when you're not really depressed? I thought that usually produced the opposite effect?

If you're going to take a drug to help you forget the cravings, I say just go all out and get some methadone.

LouCipherr
18-Jan-2011, 04:57 PM
You took a poll of 8 people - that's not exactly a good cross-section of people to ask. :p

I would gladly post 30, 40, 50 links of people who have either A) gone completely insane on this stuff, or B) had some serious (not good) reactions, or C) killed someone or themselves.

I'm not into losing my friends, especially over nutty shit like medication, which is why I'm very concerned. Again, I wish you well in quitting, I just think another route would be the best approach.

Hey, y'know how I quit? "FUCK THIS, I'M DONE!" and put them down for 3 years, right on the spot. Quitting smoking is about having the proper mind set and the willpower to do it. We KNOW you of all people have willpower for days, now we just need to get you in the right mindset to push that willpopwer on to.

bassman is right - just go get some methadone, mix it with the Vitamin-V's, and you'll be in such a coma you won't have any desire whatsoever to smoke. Remember: functionality is overrated.  :D

As the commerical says, "You can do it, WE can help."

I grew up with a buddy who swore he never did, and let me tell you--I actually believe he hadn't as of the last time I saw of him, 'cause he was a pretty cool guy but got grumpier and grumpier till he was basically an ornery old man by the time he got halfway through college.
