Ghostbusters returning to theaters

At risk of receiving lashings by my fellow HPotD'ers for my never-ending Ghostbusters nerdgasms, I just had to pass along this bit of information. Had to do my part, ya know? Plus I know a few of you here love this classic staple of film comedy.

Anyway....Ivan Reitman's original is set for a wide US theatrical release next month(October). No specific theaters are listed yet, but 500 screens is a pretty good start.

Get ready for mass hysteria! This October, Sony Pictures Repertory celebrates the original movie Ghostbusters, its franchise, and its fans by bringing the quintessential modern classic back to theatres for a special limited engagement of one showtime one night a week. Starting on Thursday, October 13, 2011 and continuing every following Thursday in October 2011, fans together will be able to see their favorite paranormal psychologists back on the big screen as they save the world from ghosts, ghouls, and Mr. Stay Puft.

Ghostbusters will show in approximately 500 theatres across the US on October 13th, 20th, and 27th, one showtime each day, in 2K digital with 5.1 surround sound. Please check local listings for showtimes. Ghostbusters will also be showing in select theatres in Canada and in various international markets; for more information on international locations and dates, please visit ParkCircus.com.

Fans who follow Ghostbusters on Facebook and Twitter or visit Ghostbusters.com will be the first to know information about the release and will be able to participate in the fan conversation leading up to this unique theatrical experience.

Commenting on the announcement, Rory Bruer, president, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures, said, "We're delighted to be bringing Ghostbusters back to the big screen – this is a special celebration of the movie, giving the fans a chance to see it on the big screen in perfect digital presentation. As we head towards Halloween, we ain't afraid of no ghosts, but just the same, we're glad that everyone's favorite paranormal eliminators are on the case."

The film was directed and produced by Ivan Reitman, with the screenplay written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis. The executive producer was Bernie Brillstein.

In Ghostbusters, University parapsychologists Dr. Peter Venkman (Murray), Dr. Raymond Stanz (Aykroyd) and Dr. Egon Spengler (Ramis) lose a research grant when their experiment methodology is proven to be bogus. The team decides to go into business for themselves and open 'Ghostbusters,' a ghost removal service. After struggling to get on their feet, they are summoned to investigate the strange happenings in Dana Barrett's (Weaver) Central Park West apartment. What they discover is that all Manhattan is being besieged by ghosts and other worldly demons through a portal in her building.

Ghostbusters is available on Blu-ray™ and DVD.

No word on release outside of the US, but UK-based Park Circus is the company behind the release, so I imagine information will be available shortly. As anyone can guess, this is most likely Sony testing the waters for a potential third film, but at least we get to see the original restored on the big screen. Having seen an original 35mm print in a packed theater recently, I can confirm that any fan of the film will be pleased with the experience.

Thanks for the news, Jason! I never got to see the original in theaters. However, Ghostbusters II was the very first movie I saw in theaters, at the age of 4. I can still remember being in the lobby with my Mom, buying the tickets.

I really hope that Ghostbusters comes to my local (although a 75 mile round trip ain't bloody local, that's for damn sure) multiplex chain. I saw Jurassic Park in the cinema when it was originally released, so I'm happy to let that one slide - especially as I watched it recently anyway - however Ghostbusters is in my All Time Top Ten and I was merely months old when it was originally released, so I'd love to see that on the big screen.

I saw Back to the Future on the big screen last year and it was a wonderful cinema-going experience.

In recent memory Jackass 3D had quite a good audience experience, but not to the extent that I imagine (based on what you've said) Animal House got ... Zombieland got a really good audience experience actually, everybody was really into that. Drag Me To Hell was my best cinema going experience of 2009, and one of the all-time best experiences - everybody was scared shitless and people were visibly wincing from the screen prior to an expected scare - and false alarms would elicit nervous titters of relief - then a real scare would come and everybody would scream (some literally jumped in their seats quite noticeably) and then laugh together that they'd been caught out ... even more fun for me was that we'd brought a friend along who doesn't do horror movies, and he was petrified. :lol:

I'd love to see Ghostbusters on the big screen though. I hope that's not just an American exclusive. Re-releases should be encouraged more than remakes - BTTF, a 25 year old movie, went straight in at #7 in the UK Top Ten!

Its possibly a royalty rights and usage mess but it spend millions shooting a movie or rerelease the shining in theatres and recoup on that all over again yknow? personally id love to see highlander on the big screen.

Drag Me to Hell scary? I didn't find it scary, really. It's more of a comedy, imo.

I do understand the good theater experience, though. Seeing Ghostbusters on the big screen was kind of like that for me. A movie i've been watching at home my entire life, i'd seen every joke, and I knew exactly what was coming next. But somehow having the packed theater all laugh together at the right moments made it feel new. Plus seeing kids in there enjoying it like it was a new movie was a great feeling. Same thing happened with BTTF.

I also agree with the movie theater experience. Seeing Back To The Future last November (or was it October?) was so much fun with a sold-out theater, even with the dork next to me [incorrectly] spouting off lines here and there. Coupled with the fact that there were people who came dressed as characters from the series.

Can't wait to see the awesome costumes for Ghostbusters.

Hey, they're already going the lazy route with the remakes, maybe that is the next logical step. Fleece your wallet outside of the home and kill things like Netflix and rule it all...

Mind you there are quite a few more who are even further out into the sticks than I. Mind you, a bus that might go by your way one or twice a day is metropolitan by comparison to those nearby living up in the surrounding hills accessed by single lane tracks.

I've gotten used to the journey itself long ago, but on the other hand there's the fuel expense. There was talk of a cinema opening in my town - indeed there used to be one (until it was torn down many, many, many years ago) - but nothing seems to have come of it. There is a small indie cinema in the next town over (10 minutes down the dual carridgeway), but they never show anything I really want to see in that setting - if I'm gonna see a blockbuster, I'll watch it in a multiplex with a huge screen and plenty of room on opening weekend - and they don't seem to do nostalgic showings either, or programmed nights.

The nearest city (technically speaking) is half an hour away in itself and their cinema is shite ... so you're surprisingly scuppered for choice.

hehe, note quite, although there are many areas around us just like that ... you might call us "semi-rural", but there's definitely a bias towards the "rural" part. :p
