Okay, so I thought I'd post a little bit more of background info on this...
I'm the guy who built the Winchester in Lego...

Now here is the thing, if you like this build and if you want to own it as any true Shaun fan would I have some news for you...

Lego has recently launched a website named CUUSOO. The concept of this site is that the fans can post their creations and the community of members can vote for the projects they like best. If the project gets enough supporters Lego will consider producing the set for real and you'll be able to buy it from their website.

If you think this project is cool, all you have to do is go to this page:

(just to be clear supporting the project does not mean you commit to buy the thing if it ever gets released, it's basically just saying that you think it's cool!)

I'm posting this here for several reasons, first I obviously need your support to make this happen, second I thought that it would be good to give everyone the opportunity to discuss the idea.

Have you looked into licensing issues? Lego pays a lot of money for the right to produce kits based on movie franchises like Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean. They may be reluctant to take on a CUUSOO creation that would require them to pay a lot of licensing fees.

Regarding Lego producing a set based on such a movie... there are several things to consider:
- they alreday made zombie related sets based on the pirates of the caribean movies, and there is an official lego minifi zombie that came out.
- they made licensed sets of movies that include violence, swearing, drinking... Indiana Jones for one. Shaun is not an horror movie, it's a zombie comedy...
The project just got launched, if Lego has major concerns we can always try to negotiate but I want to believe there is a chance...

Yeah, but the Indiana Jones series is Pg/Pg13 and doesn't have gratuitous use of the "F word", gore, and bodies literally being torn limb from limb. Whether Shaun is a horror, comedy, or historical war epic - It's probably way too far over the top for a company like Lego. They have a family-friendly image to uphold.


I don't mean to get you down. It's a wonderful set and I really wish you the best in the world, but I just don't see this one working out in your favor. Sorry to be the Debbie Downer, because I would LOVE to have this set...

It’s been a while since I last posted an update on the project so I have some big news to share!

It’s been 2 months now that the Winchester project has been posted on CUUSOO (http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/7451) and we have just passed 1500 supporters… this is amazing!
1500 supporters is a good milestone to switch the second gear... so today I am very happy to share with you the launch of a new website: “makethewinchester.com (http://www.makethewinchester.com/)” !
On this blog you will be able to find additional information on the project, who we are, an overview of the media coverage… In time we will also add instructions and making of details, exclusive info on the movie and much much more… (my signature is only a teaser of what's coming!)

Since Shaun of the Dead is a comedy, and you present your work in a humorous fashion, we believe this is within the realm of the LEGO company brand standards on violence. Note that the zombie theme does put this project at the edge of what we produce, however we recognize that the LEGO Group produces other products where themese of violence and death play a significant role.

Please understand that this initial green light does not have an effect on the LEGO Review that will take place if the project reaches 10,000 supporters. The nature of the work would require some significant internal discussion before we make the decision to produce such a set.

Not much has changed on the outside… but it’s in the inside that we have some very cool new cool features.
The first version of the build only had a detailed ground floor… actually it did not even have a wall on the side in order to simplify the photography.

This new version is now a fully modular house with a detailed interior on every floor. As with any other LEGO modular (http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3491/3915161709_67b1dfef8b_z.jpg), the floors can each be removed to allow an easy access and playability.

The third floor features a bedroom and a complete bathroom; on the second floor we have a kitchen and a dining room and on the ground floor we have the tavern that has been slightly modified to accommodate the staircase to the upper floors. The build now also has a backdoor. I'm sure the fans of the movie will appreciate some funny details like the fuse box in the staircase.

I have wondered why no one had mentioned the cut stuff from the bar scene before, the guy who complained all the time was not happy with anything even when picked for the featured fight scene (which I think most people were glad to see him get smacked with a bottle) , unfortunetly for budgetary (and time reasons I think) they also cut out another effect/stunt scene involving a pizza delivery man zombie in the bar.

As mentioned herabove by MinionZombie the Winchester project reached the 10k supporters on 31/MAR – thank god it did not happen on April 1st because nobody would have believed it!
So.. what happens next… here is the official message from LEGO

Wow! Congratulations on a great run to 10,000 supporters this week, fueled by actor Simon Pegg's mentions on Conan and Twitter! We admire your passion and enthusiasm for the film Shaun of the Dead, and your desire to see a LEGO set of the Winchester.

In our previous message, we noted that due to the themes behind Shaun of the Dead, there would need to be some significant internal discussion for us to agree to produce this as a product. Please understand that this discussion has yet to take place, and while we appreciate your work and celebrate this big success with you, we are not guaranteeing production.

But for now, we celebrate. So without further adieu, we congratulate you on achieving 10,000 supporters and officially advance this project to the Review phase.

What happens now?

This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A "LEGO Jury" composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We'll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product, including playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand.

Every LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.

The review is a thorough process that will take several weeks. When finished, we make a "go/no go" decision to develop and sell the Winchester. We will inform you of our decision, and if green-lighted, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This takes several months.

We will post followup information here and announce our final decision in the LEGO.com press room.

I have been told that it would take them 4 to 6 weeks to give their decision.
10,000 supporters does not mean they'll start making these kits, it only means the Lego group will 'review' the idea.
But we have never been this close to get official Shaun of the Dead LEGO, and that’s pretty amazing.

Good news indeed - here's hoping the review process goes well.

So far they have only developped 3 CUUSOO products (a satelite, a submarine and a set based on the Minecraft video game) - the first 2 were sold online in Japan only, the third one has not yet been released but it's up for preorder here (https://www.jinx.com/LEGOMinecraft) - chances are that it will also be exclusively sold online.

I'm not so sure I agree with LEGO's decision as it was a bit weak, however, it's their product and their company.

- the .ldr files – these are the different floors of the Winchester rebuilt in 3D with LDRAW, a freeware program which can create Lego models in 3D. (http://beta.ldraw.org/) These are the files we have used to create the instructions.

- the .lxf file – this is the complete Winchester rebuilt in 3D with LEGO Digital Designer (http://ldd.lego.com/). Once you download and install the LDD software (it’s free) you will be able to visualize the Win from all possible angles and analyze its composition brick by brick.

- the .bsx files, these are parts inventories generated with the free software “Brickstore” (http://www.brickforge.de/software/brickstore/) You will need to install the program to view the list of bricks.

Unless of course you already own a big collection of LEGO you will most likely ask yourself where to find the bricks needed to build your own Win… do not despair as I have some good news for you, Toy Shops are not the only place where you can buy LEGO! BrickLink (http://www.bricklink.com/) is an online commerce site that has been created to facilitate buying and selling parts, sets, and other LEGO related items among thousands of buyers and sellers. Yes, on this site you can buy any LEGO brick you want, by the unit – how cool is that?

Once you have created an account on this site you will be able to import the parts inventory files provided here above and order only the pieces you need to resellers located around the world.

Note that “Shaun” and the “Winchester gun” are not LEGO products and can only be purchased via BrickArms resellers (http://www.brickarms.com/).
