So actually, the old ape holds rather well against the other two - while the biggest plus for Jackson's overlong but loving homage is the relationship between Anne and Kong. I admit to be smitten with Naomi Watt's take on the role. The 70's Kong?

You have to love it when John Belushi played Dino De Laurentis to Ackroyd's Tom Snyder on Classic SNL, talking about the disaster ( depending on what mood I'm in ) which was his King Kong: "When the original Kong died, nobody cried. When my Kong died, everybody cried. "

But I'll always have a certain fondness for Rick Baker's big monkey getup, and for Jessica Lange's special effects ( who would've thunk that a damn fine actress would come out of such a thankless role? ) and even Charles Grodin chewing up the scenery.

Coincidentally, just a few days ago I went on a Willis O'Brian binge with his three Big Ape flicks - King Kong/Son of Kong/Might Joe Young. Still much fun to be had from the classics.

Interesting to see them side by side. I honestly can't remember anything about the 70's film, but loved Jackson's remake.

Naomi Watts, ftw. :)

The film you of course need to be talking about is "King King Lives" (1986) which is absolutely EPIC!

Behold the entire movie... Fast forward to 29m in for Mr Kong finding Mrs Kong!

I always liked the 1st half of the '76 King Kong, plus it had some great actors, both character and leading, and damned Jessica Lang was on fire back then. Also, Jeff Bridges made a great post-hippy leading man-dude.

Yes, but in both a literal and figurative sense it's pretty horrifying.

I'll take all 3, in my bed, for the win Alex. :D

I loves me some King Kong. All 3 versions. Even "King Kong vs Godzilla" & "King Kong Escapes" Really like MOST of Jackson's remake. (The natives, & his take on the "spider pit" were hard to watch. And the ice skating thing was just awkwardly uncomfortable to watch). My old man was into Kong, so he would regale me with tales of Kong & Son of Kong, long before I actually saw either as a wee lad. So I have a soft spot in my heart for the big ape.
