The story of the 47 Ronin is a great one. I visited their shrine in Japan a few years ago. It's strange that it's never been made into a satisfying film.

It's the same thing really, turning history into fantasy.

I think of lot of the "love" for '300' comes from the fact that it was a comic, so it gets a certain pass, despite its obvious limitations. It was the same with 'The Crow', which at the time I hated and argued how much of a load of old bollocks it was was to fans who's main argument was how great it was because it was made from a comic story. A lot of its fans glossed over its silliness and flaws, simply because it was sourced from a particular medium.

'300' is ok, but I persoannly found it hugely irritating to watch because of Snyder's...em..."style".

I loved it, I only wish I could've caught it in 3D. I really don't know, yet, much about the original story other than what my kid read to me off of wiki, but I thought they did a pretty bang up job with it. Other than the CG fox thangie they showed a few times, the rest of it all was top notch. I didn't think it was video gamey at all. The fights were well done, and not far fetched ala The Hobbit. I will say the Japanese had some pretty fucked up ideas about honor. I'd have a heck of a time gutting myself like that. I think I'd prefer an arrow in my backside...
Beautiful to look at, can't wait to check it out on my bigscreen on blu-ray. I'm sure it'll practically be a steal. Too bad no one saw this, I thought it was tits.
Probably too late to see it on the bigscreen, but I'd recommend it for some home viewing.
