I really wanna check this one out, although at 3 hours running time I think I'll wait for Blu-Ray.

What did you think of the main character? I've read some reviews that say the film is hard to 'invest' in, in terms of the main character - some sort of way into him (e.g. in Goodfellas they all do despicable things, but there's just something about their characters, or about how they're written in the script, that lets you into them to enjoy the movie) ... some reviews/reviewers have said they find the main character so repulsive that they enjoy the movie less.

It sounded kind of strange to me, particularly as there's so many anti-heroes (especially in TV) these days, some of them being very despicable, and yet you're totally along for the ride and even somewhat willing them on. Maybe it's the banker aspect putting some people/reviewers off?

3hrs went buy pretty smoothly me. A couple of scenes felt a little self indulgent, but I never felt bored of it!

As for the character, he was what he was. But I never found him repulsive though!

I've also heard that it originally clocked-in at FOUR hours, but that apparently many people rather enjoyed that cut, but of course even MS wasn't allowed to put out a movie that long, so they had to hack out an hour's worth. Some folks have said it messes certain things up, but did you feel anything was left hanging, half-finished, unresolved, or underused?

Glad that you dug it though - I look forward to seeing it. :)

Oh, and what was Jon Bernthal like in it? In the clip I've seen he's rocking one hell of a beard/mustache.

No, nothing felt unresolved for me...

Would love to see that 4hr version! Wonder if that will be on a Bluray option!? Hopefully it will just a whole hour of Margot Robbie standing there naked :)

Basically an even more sleazy version of Shane. Tough guy with a handle bar mustache. He works for the movie, though.

As for the movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it but still think it could have had another 30 minutes or more left on the cutting room floor. Not Scorsese's best, but a very enjoyable drug-fueled(and excess of every kind) thrill ride.

Saw this a couple of nights ago. It's probably Scorsese's best film in ages. It's near his classics though, but for a 3 hour film, you don't feel the time go by.

As for investing in the characters, don't bother. EVERYONE is a complete wanker. But, it's fun just to see their fake world fall apart.

There's a great little turn from Matthew McConaughey, which means that I've seen him in two pictures where I can actually stomach him. DiCaprio is decent too, but there's just something about Leo that I simply cannot abide. I have no idea what it is. As a youth he was pretty good and the like of 'The Basketball Diaries' is worth watching for him alone. But, as an adult, his performances just leave me really nonplussed. I just don't get all the umph about him.

There's also some parts in 'The Wolf of Wall Street' that are a bit unnecessary and could have done with further cutting. The silly drug driving scene for instance.

I quite enjoyed that... If only for the reveal of what really happened later!

That said I wanted to stay behind at the end to watch the credits to ensure I saw, "No real Lamborghini's were harmed during the making of this film." :)

Alright, alright, alright...that's what I love about hpotd, man. I get older, but Shootem's movie reviews stay the same.

Fabulous film. Scorcese is still one of the best directors working in Hollywood. Ubelievable how a guy his age made such an energetic film.
The drugs, the wankers, the voice over explaining in detail all the shenanigans going on,... all very reminiscent of Casino and Goodfellas.

Still, I couldn't bring myself to downright hate Dicaprio's character in this. Very ambiguous and a sign of a smart script expertly directed and an oscarworthy performance from Dicaprio.
Loved absolutely every second of it. The ending is fantastic. A perfect film for this day and age with all the Kardashians and bling bling emptyness insta-gratification. Deeply sarcastic; never laughed out loud so much at so many absolutely morally bankrupt and despicable scenes.

2014 has only just started and already one of the films of the year.

Sounds like someone else might be interested in the 4hr version too :)

When a system is perfected over many years, it best not to mess with it.

Absolutely. Hope it gets released on Blu Ray later on. Those three hours flew by in the cinema!

Actually, I'd like to reconsider my earlier comment that I hope that extra 60 minutes is comprised solely of Margot Robbie standing there naked. I actually like about 5 minutes more dwarf throwing, with the rest of it dedicate to Margot Robbie standing there naked!

Oh Neil, you randy old bastard.

Well I'm glad it's getting a lot of positive views (mostly, anyway) from my fellow HPOTD'ers. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

As for a four hour version, I read that MS had said that won't happen, which I thought was rather surprising after I'd also read that so many people who'd seen the four hour version really dug it. You never know though, maybe they'll put the longer version out ... hmmm ... maybe there's a double dip situation in the thought process? Or perhaps the footage will just be there as deleted scenes? Time will tell.

Not seen the movie yet, but really want to.

As for a four hour version, I read that MS had said that won't happen.Maybe just too expensive to edit/produce it? ie: Another whole version of it?

Hmmm ... but at the same time it was obviously in a state worth screening it in. No doubt not a final version, but still, surely most of the work would be done. It all comes down to money I guess - if it's a big hit then there'll be something in it for the distributors.

I just watched a clip of Mark Kermode debating with Sir Kenneth Branagh about the amount of orgy sequences in the film. MK thinks there's too many, while SKB (who, like me, hasn't seen the film yet) argues that perhaps MS was aiming to show just how extensive and extreme Belfort's lifestyle is/was.

So, did you think there were too many orgies/whatever in the movie? :p Did it labour any points to unnecessary degrees? Did it over indulge itself?

I basically never go to the cinema anymore (in the last 12 months I've been twice, whereas say 3 years ago I could easily go 30 times in the same time span) for multiple reasons, so tend towards getting the Blu-Ray on release. Bit of a wait, which is a bugger ... all this talk about it is making me want to see it even more.

In short, I did not find it gratuitous or scenes/material unnecessary. The whole premise of the film was to show to what extremes these individuals "fell"/"rose" to... The only way of showing that, was by showing it - IMHO.

Hmmm ... seems to be conflicted reports out there now that there won't be an extended edition on home video.

I'd be surprised if there isn't going to be an extended version ... I wonder if this is just simple mixed messaging either in simple error and miscommunication, or if it's deliberate to stir up talk about it ahead of it's April/May release date. I'm thinking the latter.
