Actor and director Harold Ramis, best known for the films Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day, has died aged 69.

The star found fame as bespectacled ghost-hunter Egon Spengler in the Ghostbusters franchise in 1984.

But he was also a talented writer and director, whose credits included Caddyshack and Analyze This.

He died of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rare disease that involves swelling of the blood vessels, his agent told the BBC.

Ground Hog Day - which he directed - IMHO is a work of comedic art!

Great comedic actor & director with an outstanding body of work. First I'd heard of it. So damn sad. RIP Harold. :(

I've never cried when a celebrity has died before today.

I've never cried when a celebrity has died before today.
I got quite emotional when Roy Scheider died for some reason!

Aykroyd added of his friend: "May he now get the answers he was always seeking."

Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day star Bill Murray also added: "He earned his keep on this planet."

Ghostbusters was like the biggest thing to me when I was a kid (and I still adore the film to this day) ... farewell Egon Spengler. :(

Ramis indeed had a superb selection of work under his belt. RIP Harold Ramis.

Horrible news. Easily one of the greatest comedic talents of the last 40+ years. The world just became a little less funny.

This photo was taken the other day outside of "Ghostbusters HQ" in New York. Very cool of the Hook and Ladder 8 company to put it back up. This sign has been hanging inside the firehouse since the filming of GB2 in 1988.

He will be missed... But I agree with what Misters Aykroyd and Murray said.

I don't know what to believe anymore. What's the point of a hoax like this (<div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));</script> <div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/ghostbustersnews/photos/a.108056382568297.4501.107014072672528/726212770752652/?type=1" data-width="466"><div class="fb-xfbml-parse-ignore"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/ghostbustersnews/photos/a.108056382568297.4501.107014072672528/726212770752652/?type=1">Post</a> by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ghostbustersnews">GhostbustersNews.com</a>.</div></div>)? EDIT: Trying to enter a facebook post with not much luck. Anyway it says it's not a recent photo and they in fact did not put the sign out.

Anyhow, somehow I'm coping.

This is the growing memorial outside Hook & Ladder 8:
