Funnily enough I watched Dawn of the Dead ('78) last night so obviously an 8.5/10

I was thinking to myself though, I would love to see the TWD team create a loving faithful remake of it using the special effects and make up techniques they have now. I'm not a huge fan of remakes but lets face it the Zombie make-up in most cases hasn't aged well when you watch it now. It would have to be done right though, no running zombies, acrobatic super soldier main characters or slow mo CGI sequences

I watched an old movie last night, called "Fargo". I had never seen it before, and I watched it because there is a TV show starting next month based on it. I am pretty sure it got oscar nominations, maybe wins, but I was a little disappointed at how....ordinary...it was. i will give it a 6.5/10.

A lot of the film's approach dealt with the banality of evil, so I can see how the film might come across with less impact in some respects.

Same with me. Fargo took a little while to grow on me. It's also loaded with funny quotes that can be used in everyday situations.

After Fargo they made The Big Lebowski, of course. One of the greatest comedies of all time.

I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but its a solid film about terrorism and how who you THINK is your quiet next door neighbor can be so much more. I remember when it was first released I loved it but every time I'd mention it to someone, they'd never even heard of it.

I saw Spiderman 2 yesterday. Not bad. Better than the first. I do have a problem with cartoons pretending to be people though, because the live action guy (Peter Parker) never moves the same as the cartoon Spidey. And of course, I don't believe he can get all that hair in the top of the mask like that unless he was wet down.

saw the amazing spider-man 2 last night, and as a life-long fan of the ol' webhead, this for me at least, was the best spidey film to date.....not a perfect film, but there were some very impressive action pieces, as well as an emotionally-charged moment or two. my only real gripes would have to be that electro comes off a tad too silly at times, and it almost seems this movie is more of a set-up for the third film in the series (which i have a feeling will be monumental!). worth checking out, i wish i had opted to see it in 3-d. i did get two free tickets when i bought the xbox 360 game though, so i may go see it again, and if i do, 3d it shall be....

Even when I saw it when it came out, I knew something was amiss. Finally, THE CABAL CUT will be ours. His true vision...
Sadly, to continue it as he envisioned, they'd need to recast or reboot. Might as well reboot since they are supposed to be doing the same with Hellraiser.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" (yes, the 1st one of the reboot series). Finally broke down & saw it. 7/10. Pretty good. Not as bad as I thought it would be.

Liked Maguire's Peter Parker better, though Garfield was good, just a little too "edgy"/cool. Emma Stone was surprisingly good & made a great leading lady, & the chemistry of the two leads was one of the highlights.

Still wasn't crazy about the changes they made (though they are relatively minor). Thought the Rami one captured the vibe a little better. But this one was still enjoyable & not bad.

Some films I've recently seen:

"Harvey" (1950) - 8/10 - always a pleasure to watch a James Stewart performance. Indeed, the performances all-round were excellent.

"The Life Guard" - 6/10 - indie flick with Kristen Bell. She's a reporter who packs in her New York life at age 29 and returns home where she takes up her old job as a swimming pool lifeguard. She gets into a relationship with a troubled teen and coming-of-age indie things ensue. I quite enjoyed it. The sort of movie that would fly under most radars, but I rather dug it.

"Pain & Gain" - 5/10 - Michael Bay's "little" movie between Transformers 3 and 4. Overlong and intensely meat-headed, it's astonishing that this was all based on a real story, but there's some bizarrely and darkly comic moments to be had. Dwayne Johnson steals the movie.

"Despicable Me 2" - 7/10 - jolly good fun. Who can resist the yellow minions running around causing havoc, and while the actual plot of the movie is a little soft it still keeps you entertained throughout. Now, will a spin-off movie entirely about the yellow minions work or will it be too much of a good thing?

21 Jump Street (2012):

I'm not familiar with the original show, and I wasn't a fan at all of Channing Tatum (indeed, I thought he was a dull-eyed moron who couldn't act worth a damn due to the likes of GI Joe) ... however - with his cameo in This Is The End, and now 21 Jump Street, I'm totally in a different mind about Tatum. He was great in this flick and made a really good team with Jonah Hill. The script was whip smart and the direction had laser like focus - it subverted expectations and cliches, in terms of itself as well as action/comedy/buddy-cop movies, while also playing up those aspects, and had a really tight sense for comedy. I laughed throughout and really enjoyed it. :)

Le gamin au vélo (The Kid With A Bike) - Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne

Drama by the Belgian Dardenne brothers dealing with the friendship between a neglected boy living in a foster home and a hairdresser. Breaks and warms the heart at the same time. Fantastic performances, documentary style direction and a lot of 'soul' elevate this above the average arthouse fare. Recommended.

I prefer Vanishing Point, but this was a pretty cool 70s car movie - and the car stuff is all the more impressive as it was done for real (rather than today where it's usually CGI); the near-miss with the bus early on alone was pretty hair-raising. Though often very funny and always watchable I never really held the NOES series in as high regard as many other genre fans. There's something so goofy about the dream sequences that I always felt like I was watching some Tex Avery cartoon instead of, being scared or feeling suspense. Freddy is a character you cheer on, not fear ...

The third one, in all its cheesy dream warriors vibe, is my favourite among all the sequels

Just to quantify that statement a bit, let's separate the original from the sequels rather than lump them together under the series banner, as I would contend none of the above applies to it.

The dream sequences in it are spot on in their nightmare imagery, & Krueger is a monster in it, not the near anti-hero/stand-up comedian he would morph into. No larfs in the original. It's played damn straight, deadly serious, & is a fairly grim flick.

You may feel differently, but that's how I see it anyway. As a series overall I'll generally grant all of the above, but don't throw out the original movie baby with the sequel bathwater. :D

Coffee Town - 6/10.

Kind of like Clerks in a coffee shop, from College Humour. I quite enjoyed it and got a few laughs out of it. Decent, not great, but certainly not terrible by any means. Fun while it lasted.

...

On ANOES - agreed on the first film, it's iconic and it gets the tone just right. The sequels get increasingly goofy - although Dream Warriors is awesome. Yes, it's goofier than the first, but it's easily the best of the sequels - it's the second best ANOES movie out there (the worst being the remake ... good lord, what a load of shit that was!). I think the problems really arose in 4 through 6 (especially part 6) where, as has been said, it just descended into jokes and parody and nothing at all scary. Inventive, but not scary - at all - like the Nintendo Power Glove dream, or the comic book dream ... yeesh.

Part 7 brought the tone back on track again, and the sight of Freddy in that trench coat and boots and tattered old hat made him creepy again, but the movie still felt a bit too slow. Looking back on it, in some ways its more of a pre-cursor to Scream than it is a Nightmare movie, but arguably it's the third best ANOES flick.

X-men: DoFP...7/10. I don't like the changes to the story, per se, and they could have spent some more time on a certain aspect of the film, but pretty good and the best, or certainly one of the best, X-men films to date (though that's not much to brag about).

Hey, Dellamorte Dellamore deserves better than a 7! Love that film. One of the last great Ittalian horror films. Way better than those Nightmares on Elm Street (sequels) IMO.

I thought the same thing about Dellamorte, but decided not to comment, as I can see it not being a film for everyone. I love it though. Easily a 9 or 10 for me personally.

Re: ANOES. Look forward to your thoughts on it. I think you'll find it quite different in tone than the sequels. BTW MZ's thoughts mirror my own in terms of the sequels.

I saw her out doing promotion for it when it was in theaters. It looked cute, & she was quite lively, charming, & entertaining in a sophisticated sort of way.

And just to keep the class level from rising too high 'round here: I'd bang her.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch

While obviously inferior to the original film, I've always had a soft spot for this goofy sequel. Joe Dante wanted to make a different film from the original and he succeeded with a light hearted giggle-fest. Reminds me of Hooper's transition from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre to it's sequel, which also works quite well. Having not seen the film in quite some time, I was also shocked at just how many references there are to classic horror films.

Ouch. When I was a kid I sorta felt that way, as the sequel had an upbeat ending & the humans win. But the dark & punk rock vibe of the original, & even the downbeat ending, won me over in the end.

The 2nd is a good larf though. :)

Bland characters, generic story, weird pacing, the 'shades of brown' visuals got dull after a while, Lungdren seems to be hobbling on bad knees throughout the entire film, the 'zombies' are just a bunch of running screaming extras with a bit of paint on their faces and some scruffy clobber on ... things just seem to happen, but not in a particularly interesting way. I'd probably go 5/10, just because the Blood Widow was cool, & the actress portraying her did a great job. I did notice one scene where the sound was a little spotty, but other than that, the rest of the production was typical to above average for an indie SOV Slasher & not bad. Acting...meh, I don't come to these kinds of flicks for that. A little gorier than I expected, with a little more of a nasty streak too. Particularly : torture scene in the basement & the ENDING!!!

As for the story: They spelled it out pretty well: the old house was a school for girls, the headmaster was abusing &/or torturing the little girl. All the other girls made fun of her, because she was "his", he gave her a ring, etc. She snapped & killed him & became the Blood Widow. That's it. Not deep, but adequate for a Slasher backstory

If you're a Slasher aficionado it's probably worth a look IMO. :)

Cold Comes The Night - 6.5/10

Very good performances from Bryan Cranston (as a near-blind Polish mafia man delivering a package), and Alice Eve (as a down-on-her-luck single mother, owner/operator of a sleazy motel). It's brief, it's moody, it's not excellent but it's not shit either - it's a pretty decent flick that's worth watching if you dig either of the two leads.

Don't get me wrong. It's a good film, but IMHO, it needed a trim by about 15 -20 minutes.

It's extremely atmospheric, whatshername does a great job and there are moments cold brilliance, but to say that there isn't an awful lot going on in the film would be a bit of an understatement. There's also an awful lot left to the viewer's interpretation. Too much really.

A few cuts here and there and it would warrant a 7 or an 8, but I'll be honest, it was trying my patience at times Kris.

Still recommend it though.

Gleeson is great in it, but he's watchable in most things.

It's decent, much better than the directors last effort. But, it's all over the place, with a couple of truly redundant characters and it's certainly not indicative of the Ireland I know, that's for sure.

It's classed by some as a "comedy", but I don't know what film they were watching. There's space for the odd laugh here and there, but it certainly is not a comedy.

There's some woeful acting from Aiden Gillan (of GoT fame), who must be the only Irishman who can't do an Irish accent.

It's not a bad film. That's really all I can say about it.

2/5.

Godzilla 2014

Wasted oppertunity. Excellent visuals, but stupid characters and plot points. Also, for being a "Godzilla"-film it features an awful little "Godzilla" and an awful lot of other monsters. This remake takes after the rather silly "Godzilla vs. XXX" series of flicks rather than the original one where Godzilla, a monster and commentary on nuclear warfare, wreaks destruction on helpless humans. Never thought I'd say this, but the '98 version is much, much better.

3/5

Locke

An OK film! I enjoyed watching it but I'd say that there's only so much you can do with a "one actor" - "one location" type of story, and this one drags a bit the last half-hour.

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjIzMDk2NTcxMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzUxMTM4NA@@._ V1_SX214_AL_.jpg

2/5.

Red Sonja

Horrible. There's no subtext in any of the dialoge. Every line - or at least nearly all of them - spell out exactly what the character wants. So stupid.
Also, for being a flairful Sword and Sorcery-film, I'm surprised that the actors didn't play more with their roles. Sandahl Bergmans villain is plain and boring. If I were playing a villain in a silly 80's conan ripoff, I'd have a little fun with it.

Ah here Neddy, let's not be rash!

Nothing positive can be said of that film except for the visuals. Even the fights were boring.

Anyway...

Investigation of a Citizen above Suspicion /
Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto

4/5

A high ranking homicide detective decides to test his colleagues. He murders his lover and sets himself up via a series of clues and witnesses. However, as the title suggests, perhaps he is a citizen above suspicion.

A classic Hitchcock film which, unusually for him, was based on a true story. He manages to claw out incredible tension and dread from the simplest of scenes.

The last quarter seems to drag though IMHO.

I'm not always seeing the posters - can people please also write in the title too? Ned and Neil have both referred to films in the last 24 hours that I don't know what they are because the images aren't showing for them (Ned's 2/5, the third on his list, and Neil's most recent 7/10).

Super Duper Alice Cooper - 9/10.

A documentary about Alice Cooper that has an 'in the now' style to it's presentation (e.g. we only get people's voices narrating events, rather than seeing them on-screen as they are in the present day). It's nicely put together and sheds new light on the history of the band and the man, and it mostly covers the years 1968 to 1986 (eighteen years, appropriately enough).

The Borderlands - 8/10.

It's a British found footage horror and, yes, I too groaned at hearing of yet another 'found footage horror movie', but this one is actually good. Using just mounted cameras and headcams, it frees the actors (and characters) of some of the nonsense usually found in such films. It's about a tech guy, a priest, and an alcoholic believer who is considered a radical, going to a small English church in the middle of nowhere to investigate apparent signs of divine intervention ... things don't go smoothly.

It was a surprisingly good flick too - I cared about the two main characters, found their banter mostly realistic (which helped suck me into the story), and I did find it genuinely creepy. It's a little bit more subtle than the usual ghosty movie too. Check it out. :)

Cop (1987):

5.5/10

Based on "Blood On The Moon" by James Ellroy (the author's third book). The film is a pretty average cop thriller with a couple of crucial changes from the book that really sap any juice out of the killer's motive, and the body count's much lower than the book. Otherwise it feels a bit too 'straight from the book' which, when adapting into another medium, doesn't really work so you end up with lots of cut corners. Stuff that makes sense and works in the book doesn't make enough sense in the film. It's an okay flick, but the final confrontation feels totally disconnected from the tone of the material, although it does include a decent kiss-off line of dialogue before the credits roll.

The Butler:

7/10

"Inspired by the True Story" ... however, with quite a lot of narrative convenience occuring, you do lean towards questioning the validity of the events during the entire film as a result. It feels a bit too 'designed' ... perhaps events did unfold like that, but I suspect there's a lot of nips and tucks to the man's story going on here, it feels too neat and tidy.

In some ways it's kind of like Forrest Gump - a single man watches American history unfold before him, the key difference being that Gump was always actively involved in those events (e.g. Vietnam), but the Butler is always just watching them unfold. It has to be that way, him not being actively involved, but then it does also go against one of the main screenwriting tenets that is your protagonist should be actively involved in their story, not passive.

That said, it's still a good watch - not as heavy handed as I thought it might have been, although it can at times be quite bleak or disquieting (e.g. certain moments of racial abuse during the civil rights movement). Whittaker does tend to mumble a bit during the movie, and combined with the accent he puts on, I was missing out on perhaps a third of his dialogue but I got the main thrust of whatever he was saying. Still though - the sound mix needed work to lift the dialogue a little higher at certain points. Overall a good movie that kept me engaged, even if the procession of famous actors wearing fake noses and hair pieces to play successive presidents became a little bit ... I don't know ... as if from a movie with a different tone, if that makes sense.

It took me a while to get into the groove of it, but I gradually got sucked into the story and the characters. It's a subtle kind of a flick, no grand overtures or big laughs, but it's heartfelt and touching and raised a few smiles along the way. Great performances all round.

Really? It's been ages since I last saw that film but in my memory it was really funny, awkward and well, good. Need to see it again probably as it's been close to twenty years ago and i was a snotty artwanker of a student last time around. ;)

It's ok, Kris, but it's vastly overrated IMHO.

Aye, it's every art student's "cult" favorite (of a certain age anyway), but when you watch it again as an adult, you don't make any excuses for it.

Sort of like 'Withnail and I', but I'd rate that higher.

Ruth Gordon is still great though. But she's the same in every 70's film she was ever in.

Let's Be Cops: very good. It's one of those you'd expect the hilarious trailers to totally ruin, but they don't. They actually kind of sell it a bit short.
The trailers drew me in, but the actual movie was on a much higher level. Weird, because anything involving a Wayans family member usually consists of nothing more than dick jokes and homophobic grossness. It's a definite B+. It also earns its R rating.
I'd recommend seeing it however. No rush to the theater, though.

1/10

I sat through 30 minutes and had to give up. All pout, emptiness, hollow posing and soulless action with a mangling of accent that bordered on the excruciating.

Lara Croft made me want to go to bed...and not in a good way.

"The Conjuring" 6/10 - ok run of the mill exorcism stuff. At least one good jump scare.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/archive/9/97/20140316042141!Oculus.jpg

"Oculus" - 8/10 - Liked it a lot better than I thought I would. Even knowing that I adored Mike Flannagan's previous film "Absentia", I wasn't expecting much. This one had some of the same qualities of not spelling everything out, but wasn't as understated (fittingly so). Don't know if it was because I was drunk, but there was at least one jump scare that scared the ba-jaysus out of me, so that's a good thing.:D Very simply story, but told in an interesting way.

Agreed. By trying to stay close to the atmosphere of the LOTR trilogy a lot of what makes The Hobbit such a great children's story is completely lost.
The Spielberg style setpieces are so over the top that they left me yawning. The finale of that film and the whole barrels on the river action scenes felt like a videogame.
A damn shame no other director got to make his or her vision of the novel.

"Lord of Tears" 4/10 - I had really looked forward to this one based on some positive buzz on the horror sites. Awkward & odd Scottish Indie. Interestingly shot, some beautiful landscape, very amateur acting. Ultimately unsatisfying. :(

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/Into_the_Storm_2014_film.jpg

"Into the Storm" 6/10 - Forgot to mention I took the oldest to see this a couple of weeks ago at her insistence. Actually not bad. Enjoyed more than expected. More of a story that I would have expected, bolstered by a variety of characters, & a good & clever usage of "shot on video/POV" footage from a variety of sources & contextually appropriate to give you a sense of really "being there" & of a "real" event.

I've seen some promo videos for that Lord of Tears film ... kind of prank videos where they dress their guy up like the beastie and hide in the dark corners of an abandoned building that gets a lot of curious visitors and urban explorers etc ... anyway, the guy creeps up on them and scares them. One guy properly freaked out after turned around to see it ... whether that was a legit reaction or not, I don't know, but it was an interesting promo idea.

Into the Storm - Sarah Wayne Callies is in that, isn't she? How was our "Lori" in it?

And Beorn, that great berserker and lordly beast master from the book, was given short shrift. For no good reason, he became this ogre like creature with none of the bearing and dark wit of his literary counterpart. I only just watched the second film for the first time yesterday, and as you could tell I wasn't that happy with it.

No. Extremely hit and miss.

There's one good effort, 'Safe Haven', which could actually be expanded to form a decent feature length film, which is why it got a 5.

The rest are poor and there's some confusing elements involved in the main narrative that didn't really make any sense.

I really rather enjoyed VHS 2. A decided improvement over the first movie.

It is true though that the 'wrap around story' still doesn't really make any sense. The individual stories were better though - I dug the flick, but it's not to everyone's liking. It was definitely more fun - and not so mean-spirited - as the first movie.

Dawn of the Dead ('78): 11/10.

Or did you mean a movie I haven't already watched 20 times? In that case...

Haunter ('13, I believe): 7/10. It's a good ghost flick, that actually makes you think you have it all figured out from the get-go, but really you have no idea. Found it on Netflix (sorry if someone already did this one. I didn't get a chance to read every single post).

The Hurt Locker - 8/10.

I'd already seen it a few years ago, but decided to revisit it last night. Still thoroughly gripping stuff, even thought the realism/movie line is blurred at times that can feel a tad curious, but it remains a very strong flick. Even though I knew what was going to happen I still found my fingers all tangled up together with tension.

Enders Game - 5.5/10

This is a very average, pretty flat flick, which is really an epic shame given the book(s) it was based on - Enders Game and Enders Shadow. In reality this film felt like it rushed over so much material, and more importantly missed so much out, that ultimately you had not real care or consideration to the events & people being shown!

If you enjoy scifi even the slightest bit, read Ender's Game... If you enjoy that, read Ender's Shadow.

I'd suggest you give this flick a miss until they remake it properly.
