Starz announced today the greenlight of the network's next original series, the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film franchise The Evil Dead. The project reteams the original filmmakers, director Sam Raimi, with longtime producing partner Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell.

The STARZ Original series officially titled "Ash Vs. Evil Dead" will be 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons -personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its "Evil" grip.

GROOOOOVY!

While being neither a fan of Sam Raimi or 'The Evil Dead' series, this has the opportunity to be good news. Hf someone had asked me in 1994 if their would be a TV series based on 'The Evil Dead', I would have laughed in their face for an hour.

So WTF is going on with Evil Dead 4 then? It's morphed into a 5 hour mini series?

Hmmm ... well, any Evil Dead is good news in my view, although I was rather looking forward to a new film in the franchise. Hopefully it'll pick up the thread according to the original ending of AoD where he sleeps too long and ends up in a dystopian future. That's always been the ending to the film franchise for me, so I'd like to see that resolved.

10-15yrs too late?

No way man, no way. I've got the faith! :)

Twin Peaks is coming back 25 years later, so as long as the script works then it's good. They could have it so that Ash has been stuck in the dystopian future for the last twenty years and then finally discovers a way back home and that's what the show is about.

Was Ash oversleeping the theatrical UK ending? Because here it was the S-mart ending. I prefer the Rip Van Winkle ending. I am looking forward to this in any case.

Wow, when I came to this thread, I was expecting more crappity crap with new, young fresh faces just like the crappy last reboot they made.
I'd be down for this. I really only didn't like the first one. 2 and AoD were the bomb, though. Too bad it'll be on STARZ because I ain't gotses that durned channel.
Guess I'll find it elsewhere when it grabs me right, or I remember...
Or someone blows up this thread at a later date.

A few tidbits of info on the show:

http://dailydead.com/bruce-campbell-talks-evil-dead-tv-series/

EW reveals a bit more of the show’s synopsis:

“Ash is living in a trailer park and working his latest thankless big-box store job when a return of the Deadites prompts him to take a road trip with two young co-workers (and, of course, his trusty boomstick).”

Campbell on the show’s tone:

“We’re going to give people a little of the old fashioned splatstick—horror and comedy… Something we’re doing is taking the horror parts very seriously. We’re not making fun of the horror aspects. And it’s going to cause Ash—this crabby middle-aged man who doesn’t want to get dragged back into this—a lot of problems. He’s not the Ash he used to be.”

On the type of Ash we’ll see in the series:

“Ash has survivor’s guilt. You could have a heyday with his PTSD. He’s a war vet. He doesn’t want to talk about it, and he’ll lie about that stump on his hand to impress the ladies.”

On the two co-workers that accompany Ash on his world-saving road trip:

“One is a male-bonding situation; the other is father-figure deal, since Ash could have a daughter the same age as this character. Hopefully we’ll pull Ash out of his loner-veteran mode and get him back into being a human being again.”

On the show’s use of CGI and practical effects:

“I have a hunch we’ll do what we’ve always done—a kind of combo platter, which is better for the audience anyway.”‘

So evidently it's picking up (long) after the S-Mart ending to Army of Darkness, and not the post-apocalyptic ending ... bummer ... but I can understand why they'd want to do that. What they're saying about where Ash is though sounds kind of cool, and these little bits of info make me happy all-in-all so I'm very much looking forward to it. :)

Sounds interesting. Love the original ending, but can see how it's much easier to spin off the theatrical ending (which most people that have seen AoD are going to be familiar with anyway).

Cautiously more optimistic than before.

...

I've given it a couple of spins and I'm just like a big, grinning idiot - I love it so much.

Initially when I heard it was going to be a TV series rather than a 4th movie I was a tad disappointed, but then I grew to be okay with that idea - but now - oh boy, I'm thrilled by what I've seen!

Some groovy one liners dotted throughout - the tone is very much a continuation of Army of Darkness by the looks of it - but with lashings of gore (the broken bottle scene, the boom stick to the head moment!). I love that they seem to have found a good ground between pointing out that Bruce/Ash is a bit ... shall we say, mature, these days, and have fun with it ... but they don't go so far that they trample all over Bruce/Ash's ability to kick ass and take names (the mid-air chainsaw-meets-stump moment).

I've seen some crackin' trailers today coming out of Comic-Con, but Ash vs Evil Dead wins out over all of them - The Walking Dead included - and you all know how much I love TWD!

It is up at 9pm - but a day earlier than TWD (Ash vs Evil Dead is on tonight - Oct 31st - TWD is on Nov 1st).

Anyone know if the show has a UK broadcaster? I saw news recently that the show would be premiering around in the world tonight in something like 100 countries - but I've not seen any UK broadcaster mentioned. From what I've found there's not even a UK broadcaster lined up FFS!

I also loved it! It's a blast from start to finish and as a result, feels like it zooms by.

I've always been more of a fan of Army of Darkness because I felt like Raimi didn't really discover the right balance of horror and comedy until that third film, and I'm extremely happy to see that this new show follows suit.

Agreed - it really did zoom by! Very energetic, an all-round good time.

The bar-room toilet sex scene was slightly strange to see (there's been very little in the way of sex - at least that, erm, rambunctious - in the trilogy) ... but the scene works well and we get a slick and efficient catch-up on who Ash is now and where he's at in life, which then gets picked at more and more over the episode.

The gore was groovy too - plenty of inventive splatstick fun - and the mix of practical and CG effects worked well, I think.

Super excited for the rest of the season!

Then again, better to be left wanting more than struggling to wade through it. :)

I know what you mean though - it does go fast ... the end of the latest episode: THE CABIN!!! - and with Ash's severed hand scuttling back to it got me all hot and bothered. I can't wait to see how the remaining three episodes go.

MinionZombie
20-Dec-2015, 06:38 PM
Man, I loved this eighth episode!!!

It was great to get back to the cabin - and to see it as this haunted, painful place for Ash - it was good to get some emotion into Ash as well, to see the cost of what he's lost, to be haunted by those old memories (e.g. Linda's severed head in the vice taunting him). Seems like the history of the cabin in the show is a combination of the first and second movies - e.g. the two holes in the door and Cheryl in the cellar from #1, with the death of Linda and the Knowby stuff from #2.

So many groovy references and call backs, but not done in a cloying way - more of a 'haunted past, frozen in time' kind of way ... very eerie!

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this continues in the last couple of episodes of the season! :hyper:

bassman
21-Dec-2015, 05:14 PM
Agreed! The return to the cabin episode is one of the best so far! As you say, there are lots of references, but none of them feel forced. There was also quite a bit of weight to the episode with Ash reminiscing about his previous encounter s at the cabin. Great episode all around! I absolutely love what they've done with this series!

Well, that was absolute cobblers.

A show that really had no idea what it was doing or where it was going.

Eh?! pfft ... you never like anything, shoot. :D

I've loved this season.

I was wondering where on earth they could go with it, but Ash is the sort who likes to bugger things up, so there's certainly scope for a major series of battles ahead in Season 2.

With the cabin playing such a major role in the last three episodes of the season I hope this isn't the last we see of it, but I do understand the need to not be tied down to just that cabin ... but it is, in many ways, the epicentre of all this chaos, so hopefully we return there in season two. I loved all the little references, which were handled very well - and little callbacks, too - e.g. Jake's manky old rotting skeleton in the cellar.

Rick Jacobson did a fantastic job directing the season finale - exactly the sort of director we need on this show to emulate the Raimi look that is key to the overall Evil Dead vibe, but also trying a few things out. There's been a couple of episodes over the season where the visuals have been disappointingly 'normal' - I presume from directors who have done a lot of work on normal telly drama shows etc - but the look of Evil Dead material is as important as Ash or the cabin or any of the other must-have elements. So yeah, Jacobson did a superb job - he nailed the tone of it all, and I'd say that the finale had the zip, whip, and all-round energy to match Raimi's premiere episode.

There have been the odd bits where it has wobbled - the episode at the doomsday prepper's compound felt terribly like filler, albeit with some good gore gags tossed in, and visually it felt a bit weak - but for the most part, particularly being that this is its first season and they're working from material that has (until now) mostly been in that secluded little cabin for 3 out of 4 movies (#1, #2, and the remake). Do I still want some of that cabin in my Evil Dead show? HELL YES I DO, but they've stepped out into Ash's world quite well for the most part (e.g. the epic fight in the diner, Value Stop, Ash's trailer). Yes, there are times when it can be a little bit like 'how can we crowbar some deadites into this episode?' - but no that things have kind have been unleashed, I doubt they'll struggle to find a way to chase Ash & Co around. :elol:

I'm eager for more!!! Can't wait for Season 2 and I hope the home video release has some juicy extras on it - I'll certainly be plopping down some cash on that. :)

shootemindehead
03-Jan-2016, 07:31 PM
Nah.

Most of the series was filler. It was unfocused gibberish, with only Ash as any kind of draw and even he was turned to mush. It hadn't a clue where it was going and there simply isn't enough story from the 'Evil Dead' to expand into a series, even if they are only 30 minute long episodes. The CGI gore was pathetic, the comedy was seriously unfunny, the punchlines telegraphed and most of the acting was simply woeful.

In all, it felt like some 90's shite TV like 'Xena - Warrior Princess', or some other sub par 3rd rate television effort.

The simple fact is, there just isn't enough to do in the 'Evil Dead' universe. By Ep 7 or 8, I was done. By Ep 10, I knew I wasn't coming back.

The irony being that due to the legal/ownership status of AoD they can't explicitly reference AoD in AvsED, and yet yeah, the Ash here is very much a continuation of the AoD version, but combined with the events of ED1 and ED2 as backstory. :)

I'm digging the series. I'm only just to the cabin episodes so I'm a bit out of date, but so far I'm really enjoying it. I think they found a great blend of humor and horror without it being so slapstick as ED1 & 2.

Heck, I'd watch it just for the premium Ash delivered one-liners.

"That's not racist. That's just a great dessert."

"He's cool. Don't poke it."

*looks at the $24 restaurant tab* "What I'm going to give you is worth twice that."

And Pablo and Kelly are great supporting characters. They add a ton to the show and a lot of options for playing off of Ash's character.

My son and I both walk around saying, "That is incorrect," all the time now.

Renewed for a third season! :hyper::thumbsup::hyper:

Awesome!!!

http://dailydead.com/ash-vs-evil-dead-renewed-third-season/

Here's what Bruce had to say about it:

I'll take five [seasons]. No one's gonna burn out at five. I got this a lot, "Hey, so Burn Notice ran, like, five seasons right?" I'm like, “No, it ran seven.” They were like, "Oh, oh." And what it really meant was they stopped watching after five. And every shows has a burnout factor. The cast burns out, the show gets too expensive, writers run out of ideas, viewership declines. Every show has its arc.

We want to end strong, and I want to put together a multiple year plan so that the writers know where this is going, the actors know where it's going, and the studio knows where it's going. Everyone should know where everything is going all the time, in my opinion.

I like the last part in particular - aiming to have a plan and know where you want it to go. :)

Yeah, there must be projections and numbers and such going into it, as well as positive internal response to what's being made, I'm assuming. :)

It's only just got going again on the air, but episode one continued in the same fun vein, so I'm happy.

It’s with great sadness I share that Ash Vs Evil Dead has been cancelled....

Well, it’s been a hell of a ride while it lasted! Here’s hoping for a stellar complete series Blu Ray in the near future....

Fuck sake, Starz. :(

The makers were concerned about that, but from what I've heard they've said that if Season 3 was going to be the last then it ends in such a way that the audience won't be left hanging.

It's a damn shame, and while Season 3 hasn't quite been up to the standard of the first two seasons on it's own scale, I still look forward to every episode and enjoy the heck out of it.

Good for Starz to make it happen in the first place, but it does seem like Starz as a channel is struggling to merit a place in the market. If you don't have enough programming what's the point in splashing out yet another six bucks a month (on top of the myriad other monthly bills) just for the sake of one, maybe two shows, that you like on said channel? Feels like the show hasn't had a wide enough access to an audience, but then again how many channels would allow for such content? Double-edged sword.

Here in the UK it doesn't air anywhere, so you have to resort to nefarious means to see it, but at the very least we get it released on DVD and now Blu-Ray boxsets around about October, so I've gleefully added them to my collection.

Seems to me they ended each season in such a way that they could work as the series finale?

Even though I love the show and this is sad news, I'm kinda looking at it as a half glass full scenario. It's really a miracle that we got these three seasons at all.

If you would've told our younger selves that there would be a highly successful zombie TV series, as well as an Evil Dead TV series with Campbell in the lead, we would have never believed it. Reminds me of the old days when we were just clamoring for ANYTHING from this genre.

1) Although the second season had a bit of a cliffhanger element to it with Bad Ruby tucked in at the end, although yeah, it could have worked well enough. However, I think with Season 3 they were thinking it was more possible that they'd be cancelled as I think Starz were already getting a bit cold in the foot. If "Stan Against Evil" gets a fourth season (while AvED doesn't) I'll be pissed. :shifty:

2) Aye, three seasons is a hell of a lot better than no fourth movie at all, so we've had some groovy telly to devour, that's for sure. It's a damn shame they couldn't work out a better model of doing their programming as it seems most people who subscribe to Starz just do so for limited periods of time, or pay for one sub (or just use a free sub) to binge a whole season/show.

The seasons have been disappointing when it comes to extras - just some skimpy online featurettes for the most part, but at least they've had good commentaries - but I doubt season 3 will get anything special either and continue the trend. I look forward to listening to the commentaries, though.

That’s disappointing to hear. I’ve held out on buying the previous seasons in anticipation for a future complete series release, hoping that it would be one of those sets that has the all-inclusive features like the retrospective documentary and lots of commentaries. Even though the series didn’t do as well as Starz had hoped as it aired, it seems like a show like this with the cult following and essentially guaranteed solid sales would get the proper box set. Fingers crossed for some good news on that front....

Those extras for the first two seasons are just what was on the stand alone releases. Season 2 looks like it's got a lot, but those are just pretty short featurettes that were shown after each episode when they originally aired.

I think it'll be a very long time, for some kind of anniversary release or something, before AvED gets any bumper extras, unfortunately. Still, better than a poke in the eye. :p

Damn. With the series available on streaming services, I may hold off for the inevitable special edition release in the future. Or at least until this current release drops to crazy low prices..

You predicted it, dude. “Stan...” was also cancelled:

I’ve never seen “Stan...”, is it worth a freebie viewing?

 I've not seen it either. Couldn't be arsed, to be honest. :D

It seemed as if that show was also on the precipice of cancellation, too, so it was no surprise. Not sure if it was ended well enough or not, but at least with AvED it had a solid ending that allowed the characters to live on in other media if the opportunity arose.
