Okay, now I'm a web design retard ... so is a piece of "ftp software" like Front Page or whatnot?

A collegue of mine is resurrecting his website which was previously done by someone else, but it needs updating and he asked if I could have a go, but I need to know the dumb-dumb info on how to get past step one - getting into the site to edit it - which I assume is done through something like Frontpage?

Some basic, beginners info to help me out would be much appreciated.

FTP means file transfer protocol and it is simply a piece of software that will transfer the html document to your online web host (storage). You create the html document with Frontpage (which is what I use) or even something as simple as word. Once created, send it to the host via FTP. You can get freeware FTP programs, just google it.

The ftp site I have with Wanadoo is fairly straight forward to use, its pretty much how you organise your files in explorer, except you upload to save.

To give you a better idea of my ftp site, the options on the left hand side bar are:

-Create Folder
-Import Files
-Move
-Copy
-Delete
-Register your site

The main window displays the files and folders like you would see in explorer.

The far right hand side shows details of the file/folder you select.

Very easy to use, but I don't know if wanadoo have given us an interface or if all ftp sites are worked like this.

Let me know if you need to know something specific.

try a program like WS_FTP

Suggestion: download a backup copy of everything and burn it to CD before making any changes to the clients web pages. With unix often it's case sensitive. Also you may have to put on file permissions in order for public users to view the created web pages.

Thanks for the info lads, it's making a bit more sense. I've got Frontpage, so perhaps I will now actually have a use for it ... my computer just gets used for porn, writing and gaming ... ROCK ON! :D
