The Expendables 3 was released on August 15, 2014, to the same mixed reviews that greeted the first two instalments. But, more alarmingly for the studio, its box office was more than $70 million less than 2010’s The Expendables, and $100 million less than The Expendables 2. The blame for this failure was immediately laid at the door of a DVD-quality illegal leak, which hit the Internet three weeks before the film was released. In fact, after just one week it was estimated that The Expendables 3 had been illegally downloaded over 2 million times.
