The "oceanic multi-purpose Status-6 system" is designed to "destroy important economic installations of the enemy in coastal areas and cause guaranteed devastating damage to the country's territory by creating wide areas of radioactive contamination, rendering them unusable for military, economic or other activity for a long time", the document says.

...

A warhead of up to 100 megatons could produce a tsunami up to 500m (1,650ft) high, wiping out all living things 1,500km (930 miles) deep inside US territory.

Ghastly, isn't it?

As soon as nuclear weapons were created we were damned to be stuck with them. Now we have deterrants specifically so we - all of us - don't use them. It's absolutely crazy, but this is the pit we find ourselves trapped in. As long as there are states - or even just groups - who would use nuclear weapons, if the rest of us got rid of them, in this world, then we can't get rid of them. We're truly stuck with these awful things - but that's far better than running even the smallest risk of a nuclear weapon being used. The sheer damage just one would do isn't worth it in the slightest bit ... so we're stuck with them now.
