New Poster Sends Clues to Direction of Next Movie

A picture, even a mere image that hints at a broader picture, can instantly give you a snapshot of things to come.
The production team that now holds the creative reins for the next Star Trek movie project has released a piece of artwork this weekend (to coincide with Comic-Con) that provides a Polaroid of an era past, as well as a vision yet to be revealed. With this familiar imagery, the direction of the next movie is now officially open to speculation.

J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof are the film's producers; Bryan Burk, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are executive producers. The film is slated for release in 2008.

The first people to get their hands on this iconic image are those who visit the Paramount Pictures booth this morning at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Three versions of this image are available now as Desktops and AIM Icons.

Several lucky Star Trek fans will win their own copy of this unique poster. Click here to enter for your chance to win!

Stay tuned to STARTREK.COM for continuing coverage about this upcoming feature film."

I think Abrams has Matt Damon in mind as the young Captain Kirk.

Well, I agree, and I don't agree. Not a big trekkie, or anything, and a lot of the movies have sucked, but they really need to TAKE A BREAK for a solid 5 or 10 years, and then get some fresh talent in, both in front and behind of the camera.

I also heard this rumor. I like Damon and think he's talented, but am not sure if he's a great fit for Kirk. It would definitely be interesting though, and might do the 'franchise' wonders. Me? I just want a good movie. Hell, I'll take a decent one.

In the words of Spock-"It would be logical to say that the Enterprise should rest in peace."
Corny, I know, but they seriously need to call it quits.

This will suck. Matt Damon is good. However he can't even spitshine Shatner's shoes.

Hopefully they won't screw up the Star Trek timeline like they did with ST:Enterprise.

Like it or not, Paramount has 35 years of history in this franchise. Rather than go out of their way to snub the fans, how about a storyline that goes back to the TOS? Wrath of Khan is still the best Star Trek movie. Well written, great cast, plenty of action, and a plot that ties it to the old series.

Instead of rehashing Next Generation scripts yet again (timetravel, the Borg, the fountain of youth, clones and yet another Lore episode) - how about a movie that goes back to the original series?

Old yellow, blue, and red uniforms. Classic Constitution class vessel from the 1960's TV series. Far as I'm concerned it doesn't have to be the Enterprise. How about the voyages of the USS Hornet or the USS Excaliber?

Man I should visit General more often. I agree or even go to when Captain Pike was in charge of the Enterprise. All we got was the original pilot and The two part episode from the original series. Lets see more of a young more emotional Spock.

as a long time star trek freak i see no point in revisiting any of the previous incarnations of star trek. i think the best thing that could be done for the franchise is to go about 2,000 or so years into the future and visit what the federation has become in that time. this would sever the movie from the "timelines" and keep the purist trek fanboys (whom i hate with a smoldering passion) from going ape crap over every little thing they perceive as wrong.

i loved enterprise. i thought it was a great show and i had very little patience with the above mentioned fanboys who trashed it over piggling little details. god i hate purists of all sorts. all of them suck copious amounts of ass.

i think that star trek has painted itself into a hell of corner with all the attention to timelines, tech manuals and what not. fanboys (and paramount itself - they are the ones putting this crap out) have gotten so wrapped up in this irrelevant sideshow stuff that the franchise can no longer live and breathe in the way that it should. every thing that comes along after is completely handcuffed by the things that have gone before.

i think that JM straczynski (i know i've spelled that wrong), the guy who created babylon 5 wrote a great 14 page treatment for a new star trek series he called "rebooted." he wanted to retell the original 5 year mission story while totally severing it from the entire star trek franchise. he wanted to give enterprise a reason to be roaming the galaxy instead of just meandering from place to place. i think that it would have been excellent. too bad we'll never see it.

That's interesting with the latest retelling of Batman, Spiderman and Superman going on... See nothing wrong in a Star Trek retelling!

neil - if you google "star trek rebooted" you can read the actual treatment. it can only be downloaded as a pdf. so my attempts to link it here have all met with futility. plus i am not going to post a 14 page treament as a thread. that would be out of control.
