As the “modern radio”, podcasts have become quite popular since the early 2000’s, so I thought it’d be interesting to see what some of our fellow HPotD brothers and sisters enjoy listening to, and maybe we can share and learn of some new ones?

A few of mine to kick it off, with who’s involved and a brief description. Some are also video podcasts that can be viewed on YouTube, as well as the standard audio versions.

WTF with Marc Maron
This is one of the “big dogs” of the industry, so chances are that everyone’s heard of it. The comedian interviews all different types of celebrities, musicians, political figures, etc from his garage. He was famously the only podcaster to get President Barak Obama in his garage several years back.

The Joe Rogan Experience
Like above, another comedian that does interviews with a wide range of popular figures. He also does a subsection for MMA, though I’m not really a fan of that sport.

Doug Loves Movies
Yet another comedian’s podcast, but this one is more like a game show in which Doug Benson gets three or more guests and they play trivia games all about movies. It’s done in front of a live audience, so the laughs come at a consistent rate. It’s also of course fun for cinephiles to play along!

Post Mortem with Mick Garris
This one doesn’t get new entries very often anymore, but Garris interviews people involved with the film/tv industry, mainly in the horror genre. It’s quite fascinating to hear these insider tidbits from some of the genre greats. I think members here would certainly enjoy it!

I’ll save some of the others for later. So what do you fine folks enjoy listening to? :)

I watch Joe Rogan, but some of it is cringe worthy. Part of the free form experience I spose.

The one last week with Alex Jones was unbelievable, for all the wrong reasons. That guy is not right in the bleedin head. And Eddie Bravo, or whatever he's called...jesus wept. :duh:

Just train wreck discussion, but fascinating.

Tell 'Em Steve-Dave - my favourite podcast, I'd say. It's some of the Comic Book Men folks, although CBM was the show that resulted from the podcast. The main hosts are Bryan Johnson, Walt Flanagan, and Brian Quinn. However, the podcast itself certainly isn't CBM. The show has expanded with a wide variety of familiar voices who pop in now and then, creating a sort of 'TESD Town' as they call it. Listeners refer to themselves as "Ants", it has it's own club called The Four Colour Demons, and they've done a variety of video projects from puppet movies to game show specials. Every year they do an epic Xmas special, too. Generally they don't have any specific thing to talk about, just whatever takes their fancy, although there are certain topics that come up now and again that are almost recurring segments, such as: "You Hitlearn Something New Everyday" (weird facts about Hitler) or "Fat News" (new stories about overweight people/events). Their host of characters includes the generally annoying 'Git-Em' who works part-time at the Secret Stash store where they record the podcast, Father Lance (religious dude), Troy (policeman), Sunday Jeff (a co-worker), Ming & Mike (co-workers from CBM), and like five guys named Frank among many others. They're known for their well-meaning but oftentimes compromised endeavours (e.g. projects that go askew), flights of fancy during ad reads) ... it's kinda hard to explain and sum up, but it's the one I dig the most.

SModcast - Kevin Smith & Scott Mosier. It kinda ground to a halt when Mosier was off in France for a good long while making that Grinch movie, but he's back, although it's still a bit sporadic (especially right now with Smitty making the new Jay & Bob movie).

Jay & Silent Bob Get Old - this one is pretty sporadic now, and oftentimes the episodes are recordings of live shows from months ago. It's kinda worn out now, especially with the mind-numbing portions of the show where Kevin Smith repeats the same fucking lines during certain segments of the show (I just fast forward through those bits). However, when Jason Mewes is just allowed to be himself and chat away it's still fun to listen to.

Hollywood Babble-On - Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman's weekly popular culture podcast.

WTF with Marc Maron

The Joe Rogan Experience - I dip in and out of this on YouTube.

Your Mom's House - comedians and husband & wife Tom Segura and Christina P. host this. I stumbled across it not too long ago and I've really got into it. They've got a whole host of in-jokes that take a little time understanding (e.g. "low and loose" is a bad thing, "high and tight" is a good thing - it all relates to denim jeans, lol - as well as "Cool Guys" who are anything but, the infamous "Good Morning, Julia" etc). They're on YouTube and it's well worth watching as there is a lot of video that they riff on (weird shit found on the Internet). There's usually a lot of "brown talk" (they're oddly, hilarious obsessed by bowel movements and farts ... which resulted in the "fart mic", which amuses Christina P. to no end). Like with Rogan, it depends on who the guests are, but it's a really enjoyable one. They've got a fantastic audience, as well, known as "The Mommies" who often flood the social media feeds of people thrust into the YMH limelight with numerous in-jokes (Garth Brooks' cringy social media was recently flagged up on the show and the comment feeds have since been inundated with Mommies  ).

Post-Mortem with Mick Garris - Bassman, they had a month off over Xmas, but they're back now and generally do one episode every two weeks. :)

You Made It Weird - only if there's someone I'm interested in is on.

The Movies That Made Me - again, an occasional listen. The hosts are Brian Olsen and Joe Dante. It seems that they have finally sorted out their infuriated audio issues and main host Olsen has seemingly learned you need to TALK INTO THE FUCKING MICROPHONE rather than moving around all over and mumbling. They invites guests in the movie biz to talk about their favourite flicks.

Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast - comedia Gilbert Gottfried interviews obscure showbiz types and goes off on weird riffs.

The Rialto Report - it's all about the grindhouse era with a focus on the golden age of adult entertainment. It's a fascinating look inside a fringe world of entertainment and features various interviews with the iconic figures from both sides of the camera.

How Did This Get Made? - it's all about weird, terrible, or batshit crazy movies. A couple of great episode examples would be the ones they did about Face/Off, Sleepaway Camp, and Maximum Overdrive.

Maltin On Movies - famed movie reviewer Leonard Maltin and his daughter Jessie talk with guests from the world of film & TV.

Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend - most of the ruddy show is anything but the interview with the guest, which seems to only take up about 40% of each episode, so it's only an occasional skim through for me. The bulk of the rest is the talk show host chatting with his staff or 'paying off his beach house' with the extensive ad reads. It feels a bit too polished and slick, to be honest, too 'presented', although when they finally get down to just Conan talking with people he's friends with (or wants to be more friendly with) it's quite fun (e.g. the episode with Dana Carvey is hilarious).

Some of these I just dip in and out of whenever there's someone interesting on, others I listen to every episode.

I have to give "How did this get made" a spin sometime. I've heard good things about it.
Otherwise, since I'm bilingual (and working actively on tri-) I listen to a few swedish shows as well. There is actually a very good quality podcast called Creepypodden which adapts well known creepypastas for the radioformat. It's in swedish tho, but sometimes it's really good.

In english I listen too;

Knifepoint Horror - a sporadically updated horror tale podcast. Sometimes it's GREAT. If you haven't, listen to the episode Impound. It's fairly recent (June...) and one of the best episodes he's released.

You are not so smart - I don't listen to it slavishly, but it's always interesting. It's about psychological studies and phenomena which control our thought- and behaviour patterns without us realizing it. For instance, one episode is about our affinity for seperating ourselves into different groups - something which we as humans will always do regardless of how transparent the process is. In one study they simply, and overtly, selected people into random groups of "Group A" and "Group B". Despite the complete randomness and transparency of this people would still favour their own group over the other.

My Dad wrote a porno - I only ever really listened to season 2, but boy was it a riot. Me and my ex girlfriend used to listen to it on and off on long car trips.

The Black Tapes - A well produced suspense series that has now ended, presented itself as an investigate podcast into the paranormal. It's all faked, but it was a good run and a good show. Worth a listen.

The Arrow Video podcast - An easygoing podcast about some of the releases Arrow Video has put out. I enjoy it but I wish they'd go deeper into the films themselves. Sometimes the theme of the episode feels almost like an afterthought. For instance you'd imagine a film like Waterworld would be something they could talk alot about, but they barely scratch the surface and then move on to other things.

Same. Basically, we could just say the whole smodcast network! I’d also add Fatman-on-Batm...I mean Fatman Beyond. :p Smith will never get used to the title change! But that one is near the top of the Smodcast list for me because Marc Bernardin provides a good, more serious balanace fo Smith’s antics.

I just recently got into that one as well! It took a little while to get a grip on Segura’s sense of humor, even though I’d seen his standup and somewhat regular appearances on Joe Rogan, but after a few episodes - I was IN. The whole McDonald’s sponsorship fiasco was amazing to me! How in the world did McDonalds give them 2.3 million and not know what kind of show it was?!?

Oooh, this is a new one to me! Cheers! I love Dante when he’s on Maltin or Post Mortem, he’s great to listen to!

I also listen to all those. You had turned me onto How Did This Get Made? sometime last year, and while I enjoy it, more often than not it’s a movie I haven’t seen, so I have to skip it. Recently, at least.

Agreed on Conan. It’s still pretty new, so I’m hoping they can iron out those promotional hindrances. Cut them down a bit. But yeah...I loved the episodes with Carvey, Olyphant, and Goldblum. I think Goldblum’s was last week and as usual, the guy is a strange cookie, but it was funny!

A couple new ones from Ned will be going on my favorites, as well!

MZ took a big chunk of my favorites, so these are the only others springing to mind at the moment...

The Church of What’s Happening Now
With comedian Joey “Coco” Diaz. Basically they just talk about whatever they like. I suppose it really hinges on whether or not you like Diaz’s vulgar “New York-a” style comedy.

Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast
Again, this one probably depends on your opinion of Burr, as the show rarely has guests and it’s just Burr rambling about whatever is on his mind at the moment.

hehe ... I believe that's a joke ... I think/hope.

Have you seen the clips of listener's doing their own versions/impressions/riffs on the "Good morning, Julia" video? Friggin' HILARIOUS. Had me gasping with laughter. :D

VIaS2OIy6ag

I kind of stumbled across it, probably through a Bill Burr recommendation thing on YouTube (i.e. if you watched this, watch this), and gradually watched more and more clips and then now I follow both their channels (they have one for choice clips, another for the full episodes). That's the same way I got into Rogan's podcast. I'd not really heard of either of the hosts beforehand, but have now watched their specials on Netflix and they're brilliant.

I just listened to the latest episode and ruddy Olsen has forgotten how to talk into a microphone again (moving around, mumbling all the damn time)! Their audio engineer needs to sort that shit out. Still, though, it's one of those that I dip in and out of (when there's a guest on that I'm interested in) because I'm a big fan of Joe Dante and Trailers From Hell.

Aye, likewise, there's been a bunch of movies recently that I've never seen (or even heard of), so it's not really fun to listen to them rip on a movie you've not seen. Hopefully they'll bring up something that I have seen sometime soon! :)

I've not heard of this one, but I have rather enjoyed Diaz's appearances on Your Mom's House as well as Joe Rogan. Man, that dude's got a boatload of colourful stories up his sleeve!

Aye, really funny stuff!

The McDonald’s thing was a joke?!? They redid the set to match the McDonald’s colors, then changed it again when they lost the sponsorship. If that was a joke, it was an extremely extensive joke, and they totally duped me! I felt like it was real!

They've never actually said it was a joke (AFAIK), and they continue to tell it to various guests they have on, but I just cannot believe that McDonald's would not only not do basic due dilligence for one, but for two spend over two million dollars sponsoring a podcast!

They do have this kind of sarcastic 'lean into the joke' type attitude at times, a version of which is the "cool dude" label being applied to weirdos who clearly ain't cool.

Yeah, I just had a look around on some Your Mom’s House discussion boards. I admit it, I was duped!

In my defense, Segura’s got a fantastic poker face!

In one of the most recent episodes of Maltin on Movies, Jonah Rey reveals that the original Dawn of the Dead is one of his favorite films and he’s actively persuing the possibility of including it in the next season of Mystery Science Theater 3000. This has been a loooong standing wish of mine! If they can convince Rubenstein to license it to them, which I imagine will be troublesome, it could be one of the top MST3K episodes of all time!

Great podcast listen, btw! If Maltin on Movies hasn’t been mentioned, I recommend it!

Has anyone ever tried improv 4 humans with Matt Besser?? I’ve just discovered the podcast, even though I’ve enjoyed Besser’s comedy for years(he’s cofounder of The Upright Citizens Brigade), and I was laughing so hard that I was doubled over and getting strange looks from coworkers. Extremely funny podcast, any fan of comedy needs to check it out!

I also recently began listening to James Bonding, which is of course about the 007 series. As a big fan of the franchise, their deep-cut discussions have kept me entertained and taught me some new things about all things Bond.

I've heard of "James Bonding" - that's the one with Matt Mira, isn't it?

I've been listening to some "How Did This Get Made?" of late, the episodes for Van Helsing, Hard Ticket To Hawaii, and Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II are hilarious. And, finally, "The Movies That Made Me" seem to have actually sorted out their audio issues now, so it's a much more enjoyable aural experience now.

Yeah, Mira is one of the hosts. As a fan of Bond, I think you’d really enjoy it. They know a lot about the series and keep it entertaining. Unfortunately a good portion of their episodes are behind the paywall on Stitcher, which I do not have, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed listening to the available freebies.

Does anyone here use the Stitcher pay service? I currently use Apple podcasts and I’ve noticed more and more that shows seem to be signing deals with stitcher....
