I have been thinking about the last 7 months and what Hollyweird has been offering us and I must admit I am far from impressed. In fact in the last 5-8 years the quality of films has been down right horrible.

As an avid film buff like most of you I was curious as to all your thoughts about the current state of Big Budget/Star Driven Cinema. Personally I feel this has been one of the worst years with 2005 being the absolute worst of them all.

Thoughts?

so far, the ones I've enjoyed the most are Superman Returns and Over the Hedge.

I feel that in certain aspects, Hollywood may actually be coming around. We've still got all the crappy remakes of horror films for the kiddies, but there's also some good films getting thrown into the mix.

This year has some pretty good stuff that I'm looking forward to. Might as well list them now. Here they are(some have been released and I've already seen):

Superman Returns
Brick
Clerks II
Casino Royale
The Fountain
Hard Candy
Lucky Number Slevin
World Trade Center
The U.S. vs. John Lennon
Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Strangers With Candy
Southland Tales
A Scanner Darkly
Neil Young: Heart of Gold
Nacho Libre
The Matador
Miami Vice

Just answering a few things for ya, MZ.

"The Fountain" is Darren Aronofsky's(Pie, Requiem for a Dream) new film.

"The U.S. vs. John Lennon" is a documentary on Lennon's ways as a political acitivist and how the US tried having him...."taken care of"

"Southland Tales" reportedly did horrible at it's premier at Cannes, but Richard Kelly(director) said that was his "rough cut" and that the theatrical version would be different. I have faith in the guy...."Donnie Darko" rocked my socks off.

"Neil Young: Heart of Gold" is a a documentary/concert about music legend Neil Young. If you said "eh?" because you didn't know who Neil Young is....I'll b*tch slap you.:p

At last but not least....what's with the staight forward "nope" on "The Matador"? I hope you're not refusing to see it because of the advertising. The advertising is COMPLETELY wrong for that film. It's made out to be a straight-forward buddy action flick but it's NOTHING like that. It's probably the second funniest flick I've seen this year(of course "Clerks II" is first). You and I hve seemed to have had the same tastes in films usually, so take my word for it.....watch it. It's at the very least worth one viewing. I don't think you'll be dissappointed. I loved it. That goes the same for anyone else 'round these parts. Trust me, man.

Actually one of my favorite movies this year wasn't even a big movie. I saw United 93 for free right before seeing M:I 3 for free, and I have to say that it was a great movie. I'd say about 1/4 of the movie takes place on the actual plane and the rest in air traffic control towers. I doubt seeing it on dvd will be the same as on the big screen because that movie just made me feel like I was packed into a very tight space and couldn't get out. Plus it didn't try to take a political side or back up stupid conspiracy theories. I forgot what came out earlier in the year so I can't say for sure if this was the best movie so far or not.

hmm, I haven't been to the theaters this year.... strange. I'm a fan of big dumb explosion movies and goofy horror flicks, but there really hasn't been that many as far as I know

I'll check out The Fountain then, "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream" were f*cked up, but fantastic and original movies (if the latter doesn't turn you off drugs then wtf is wrong with you, quite frankly, lol).

Oh yeah, I'll check out S.Tales, D.Darko similarly rocked my cock and my socks, it's such a great movie, so deep with so many textures and layers ... and a (albeit deleted scene) nod to Christina Applegate circa Married...With Children.

Not a Neil Young or Lennon fan to be honest, doubt I'll watch either of those, maybe one day in a long old while I'll check out the Lennon one, but it's not really my bag.

I'll take your word on The Matador, we do indeed have a history of similar tastes in the movie world, and I trust your view (which is pretty much like mine, and I trust myself implicitly, ha!). I'll check it out when it comes on DVD or Sky, give it a razz.

I had a kid in January (well, my wife had the kid), so I havent had much time to go to the movies lately. In fact, we saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2 weeks ago, and it was the first movie we've seen since December. We're going to try to get out to see Clerks II, though.

List of movies I'll probably catch on DVD:

United 93
X-men: Last Stand
MI:3
Da Vinci Code
Pink Panther
