Could be good, but it still seems odd to halt your trilogy after the second entry to go back and do a prequel….

Was it a trilogy? I don't recall the 2nd movie too well. It was good, but it just didn't quite have the same spark as the first. Kinda felt like it was trying to just do that movie again in some parts.

I'm interested to see this new film, though.

I seem to remember Vaughn saying he had a plan for a trilogy before filming the second entry. I believe it was shortly before he started talking about the idea of a prequel. As you say, the second movie didn’t have the same spark as the original, so maybe a change of scenery for this prequel will help with the execution of the final film.
