Whats up? Longtime no post, huh? My company has sent me 700 miles away to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania this week and I found out that Monroeville mall was only 13 miles away from my hotel.Because I'm a die hard Romero fan I figured its time to make the pilgrimage to this holy site.

Some fun facts before we start the gallery of weapons grade awesomeness
1. This mall was extensively remodeled in the 2000s. Nothing looks like what we know. Ice rink turned into food court. ETC.
2.Yeah that's about it. It was worse than a hard to open pistachio finding recognizable areas.
3. I'm willing to bet vital parts of my anatomy that you'll love what I have to show and tell

Driving up to the holy land. A gentleman doesn't kiss and tell so I can't describe how it felt.

Found a parking spot!

Went in, explored a bit, needed to pee and went down this hallway to make urine. Turns out this was the hallway they sealed off with drywall and 2x4s. Best. Pee Location. Ever.

The pillars and floor are still original to the movie. Found this Romero tribute on a pillar.

I go up the escalator to find this store on the 2nd floor. Oh my gosh. This isn't just a store. It contains all the holy grails from the Romero series. They also had a movie poster for "Zack and Miri make a porno".....why? idk? I guess a scene from that movie was filmed here? kinda weird but okay. Just overall really out of place. Picture not included because, well I just didn't understand this.

Some product to buy

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/a45/deepdeadsea/IMG_3020.JPG
I bought 2 autographs, a sweater and a museum tour.

always support this store. malls are starting to die in America. if this mall closes we lose so much history. Plus the living dead appreciate it - per my receipt.

:D oh my gosh

Nice! It's sad, though, that the mall has changed so much. They should not have allowed that to happen. It should have been kept as much of a "time-capsule" as possible.

BTW, the light posts on the parking lot also look like they are in fact the same as in the movie. Glad to see that some things of the 1970s mall still have managed to survive until now.

Awesome! Thanks for the photo tour - and entertaining commentary.

Even though so much of it has changed, I would like to go there some day, but what with the pesky pandy and the moths in my wallet, well...

RE: Zack & Miri - yeah, there was a scene or two shot outside the mall (IIRC Miri works there), and Tom Savini also had a cameo role as a fake landlord. Oh, and there were hockey jerseys featured in the film for a fake team called "The Monroeville Zombies".

Wow, thanks for this. Browsing through this touched me a bit, I had no idea the mall was so dedicated to the living dead films even to this day.
Beautiful!

Doctored, censored, "official" version of what happened:

“It appears the operator got off route and tried to correct by turning into the parking lot,” Brandolph said. “(The driver) didn’t see the light pole, as it was not illuminated. Therefore, no traffic citations will be issued.”

What really happened:

“It appears the operator hot-wired a truck from a nearby depot, headed to the mall, hit some wandering zombies on the parking lot, and tried to correct by turning” Brandolph said. “(The driver) didn’t see the light pole, as it was not illuminated (the nuclear power was off for some reason.) Therefore, no traffic citations or manslaughter charges will be issued.”

hey it's the kid (who is now 33, holy shit time sure does fly by....) with possibly the coolest avatar in the history of the HPotD forums! good to see your username around these parts!

i visited the monroeville mall a few years back. it was quite the surreal experience. so much has changed, it's almost sad. still there was a very strong sense of deja vu walking around some of the areas that are still recognizable. one of the coolest parts for me is that my son (age 5 now) was still quite young and hadn't even gone down a slide yet. we spent a lot of time in the area that is now a kid's play area that used to be the fountain if i am remembering correctly. anyways, i took a video of my son going down a slide for the first time, and it was at the mall where they filmed on of my favorite films of all time. he is big into action figures these days and has seen the still-in-the-box neca dawn of the dead figures i have and knows they are from a "scary zombie movie" that was filmed in a mall we visited as a family when he was still in training pants.

neat that the living dead museum is now located there. when we went it was still in evans city, which was another stop on our trip. stopped in and took the tour, spent a few bucks, bought a piece of the dawn escalator, checked out the cemetery and the site of the old farmhouse where the original night of the living dead was filmed, as well as locations from the crazies and the 1990 version of night. we also went to a ball game at pnc park and drove by some of the filming locations for the basement scenes of night '68 and dawn's rooftop and police dock scenes. it was a super cool trip. i definitely plan to go back someday and hopefully catch a pittsburgh steelers game and revisit the area. mr. rogers is buried nearby, and my kids are all fans of mr. rogers and daniel tiger, so that would be something to see next time as well.

thanks for sharing the pics, glad you got to check it out. it should be a bucket-list item for any fan who can make it happen. awesome to see you and your hilarious avatar again!

Also Night of the Demons (1988). But let me take a wild guess: you have never seen that one either. LOL! It's THE quintessential "demons" movie! It's got it all, and then some: great old-fashioned make-up & special effects (no CGI bullshit), creepy atmosphere (it was shot in a real abandoned old mansion in Los Angeles), hot babes (some of whom go topless, of course; it's mandatory!), hard-rocking 80s punk/metal and cool creepy synthesizer tunes, a character named "Stooge" (who is the very definition of that "out-of-control metalhead/punk-rocker" friend we all had at some point in time in our lives), hilarious dialogue (Suzanne: "Oh, no thanks, I'd rather take Stooge." Sal: "Stooge??? Stooge is a fat pig!" Suzanne: "Maybe I'm in the mood for pork tonight." Stooge: "Oink! Oink!")

Is that mall still garnering a decently fair amount of traffic?

I've been wondering about this mall for a long time now and I follow Dan Bell who does video documentaries on dead malls and he has openly spoken about Monroeville mall in some videos before but he hasn't done a video on it yet?

Neil or me? If me, I've seen it ... although it was a long time ago and I don't remember a huge amount about it now, save for the gif of LQ bending over that keeps turning up on social media.

I seem to recall there was some talk about it a while back ... possibly being in trouble? Anyone else here remember that? Was it Covid-related? Just talk in the wider context of malls?

Yeah, Melinda Clarke was in ROTLD 3.

I always thought she was more attractive and is definitely aging better than Linnea Quigley. IMO, of course.:)

Melinda Clarke is over ten years younger than Quigley, though. We'll have to see how she looks when she is in her 60s.

Yes, I know that. But she has still aged better overall.;)

Great shit dude. Was in Pitt for business back in 04 and you bet I took a drive there myself and walked around the mall for hours. Little did I know that when I was a pre teen that this film would have the impact it did on me and never did I ever think I’d see the actual location in person. Totally took me back the first night I saw Dawn in the theater and didn’t sleep a wink all night and nightmares followed for months after

WOW totally cool pics! I wish all that stuff had been there when I was there at the mall years ago. When I was there, they were just starting some renovations, and had taken down all the light fixtures in the mall and replaced them. They were selling the old ones as "movie props" for like $200 I think. I still kick myself sometimes for not buying one. Seems like for some weird reason they had missed one, whether on purpose or on accident, that was still up in the mall somewhere. i wonder if you saw it?

Where was this museum, behind the store front where stuff was for sale? Was the tour the $129 thing on your receipt? Someone mentioned this museum was moved from Evans City...I didnt see and/or know about it when I was in Evans City. What years was it there, and how long has it been in the mall? I may have to make another trip!
