I'm trying to write a story, but need to know what people think about what makes a good story. What should i avoid in my writing and what should i add? I don't think alot of the stories in our fiction section delve enough into these peoples thoughts and feelings about how living in this new world makes them feel. I want to do this and at the same time make it intense and action packed! Do any authors out there know what I'm talking about? Does anybody have any thoughts to contribute?

1) No life
2) No girlfriend
3) No job
4) Just a loser
5) Glutton for punishment

One of the above maybe.

I think your story would benefit greatly if you chopped off your own hands and put them in a blender.

I think DD's suggestion is best. Also you could possibly write a story about a 15 year old moody kid who saves the head cheerleader and gets in her pants while watching the jock quarterback ex-boyfriend getting eaten alive by zombies; can't forget the witty comments by the hero and the katana-swinging. Of course the kid must have an arsenal of big guns under his bed (think .50 anti-material rifles and GAU chainguns).

That'll make your story really good.

Has anyone suggested ninjas yet? Ninjas make any story cool.

Car chases and big explosions. Look at what it did for Dawn '04.

Yea, seriously...

But yea.

Vikings. Vikings make everything better when they're raping and pillaging...

Also throw in some mummies. Who talks about mummies anymore?

Mummies, the original zombies. Any good recent mummy books? Or films if you ignore the Stephen Sommers films (heard he's making another one...)?

er...a spinctersaywhat?

You can't have a good story without martyring off the main character, making sure the biggest loser gets the hottest chick, and directly quoting the SHOOTER'S BIBLE a bare minimum of sixteen times.

That is all.

Have the Ultra Manly hero impale the Goon on a treebranch and say
"Why Don't you just.. Hang around!"
Heeeheeeeheee!

Have a 16 year old astro physicist pick up a 50 pound military grade automatic weapon and shoot strait and true and nerver have a misfire. And after the carnage, all covered in gore, have a steamy kiss with the 18 year old Security guard who has no shirt on, spends all his time with a persional trainer and has a shaved chest.
