I saw an advert somewhere for what appears to be a GREAT idea for a scifi film - where the human race for some reason has gone sterile.

What is this film? I hope it lives up to its potential! What a great simple idea!

Indeed, it looks like a great film, great idea and with a dystopian Britain ... which looks like what would happen to us if we continue under Gordon Brown or any of the other socialist, weasily Labour wankers.

*ahem* Looks like a great flick, I'll be checking it out.

Fairly common theme in science fiction, recall seeing an episode of the Outer Limits that had a similar plot. Haven't read the book yet, but the movie sounds interesting.

This should happen in real life. There are a ton of people out in the world who don't deserve children, while there are millions of women out there whom want one and would be devoted mothers can't have them.

You know, I often talk about forced neutering for certain individuals based on their moronic acts ... if I was in charge there's be many a spayed citizen I tell ya, and indeed, in a world where there are countless kids waiting to be adopted, how can anyone think abortion is a bad idea? Think about it, some scummy mother who doesn't even want the kid has it and gives it a sh*t life and it grows up to become part of society's problem. Abort the completely unwanted child and spare us all (child included). But of course ... some people are anti-abortion, but there's plenty who are in favour...me included...so as long as the right isn't taken away by some wackos then okay ... back onto this thing though, neutering of certain people would be a good thing ... put something in their 40oz beers perhaps? :sneaky:

While to some it sounds like a good idea, in practice eugenics is an ugly and amoral practice. Most folks are aware of the Nazi use of eugenics to support their dictatorship. However the use of forced sterilization by Western countries like Canada, Australia, the UK, Norway, France, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, and Switzerland until the 1970s is less known.

For US specific info google

Eugenics Research Office or the Pioneer Fund for more details.

I dunno man, the waiting list if like 6 years long to even get an adopted kid. There arent that many. My friends are a sterile couple and have been waiting 5 years. Its why so many people go to China to find a kid.

Exactly, so there's plenty of adoptable kids in the world...but the process of adoption itself is a long haul and doesn't always work out, and with varying ages of kids there are varying circumstances ... obviously it's a good thing to be a tough assessment.

Basically, aborting an unwanted kid that would just end up having a sh*t life with their waster parents is best. If it was being put up for adoption, then that's better ... so in the end, if you're going to have your own kid, give it a good life and actually be there to parent it. None of this crap with sitting them in front of the Play$tation all day, not talking to it and then going out with your partner every Friday/Saturday to the pub and living a completely separate life to your kid - what's the bleedin' point.

Hmmm ... forced adoption if folk don't shape up?

So youre saying we should just murder the unborn because its easier than fixing the adoption system? I dont know the solution and I dont pretend to, ultimatly though niether scenario really wins. Forced abortions and uncontrolled abortions just lead to insane imbalances in the population. What your childhood is like though is not an indicator that youre going to have the most productive life 2 examples Leonardo DaVinci and Paris Hilton.

Geez, can't a guy not be serious for once about a serious issue without the whole deal turning into a big "thing"?

If parents aren't going to provide their kids with a good quality of life, they don't deserve kids ... simple as in my opinion. And on it's own, abortion is always an option.

I havent decided how I feel about abortion personally because its such a complex issue. I dont know how anyone can be 100% certain on it. But killing kids because thier parents are the greatest seems a little wierd to me. Forced sterilization and abortions in my opinion scare the crap out of me, isnt that what the Commies and Nazis did?

I kind of wrap myself in with the whole, anti-facist thing. I dont like seeing rights being taken away from good people, even if theyre not going to be good parents. Unless theyre abusing the kids (for real abusing, not that made up crap) they should be able to keep and have kids when they want to, otherwise we are no better than the 3rd Reich or the Communist regiemes that did those things to thier people.

I agree whole heartedly with you there mate. It seems in this world you need a licence to do EVERYTHING from getting a car to buying a gun but any nutter can have themselves a child and abuse the trust that comes with it.

I'd like to think of myself as the middle-class Brit's, film-focussed, forum-bound version of Swift ... for people who really enjoy swearing, farting and belching. :D

Frank Herbert also wrote a book along these lines called The White Plague...

Except it involved a disease that killed any woman that was infected by it.

Good read though.

I still love the idea of this film. Films like this should win best picture and be the highest grossing films ever made.

You might also want to check out the work of Edward P. Hughes (Masters of the Fist, Baen Books, 1989). It was also serialized in the 'There Will Be War' and 'Far Frontiers' anthologies. It's a bit dated, but follows a similar theme, and it takes place on the Emerald Isle.

I went to go see it last night, unfortunately the cinema website said it was on,when in fact it opens tonight so we had to watch something else so another cinema trip will be due next week!
The film we did watch was "the night listener" which was quite good,no guns or explosions, just a creepy psychological thriller, with robin williams in a serious role :stunned: as a gay radio presenter who befriends a badly abused kid with aids,or so he thinks...........

***SPOILER*****

I have read the book and pretty much everything was interesting; totalitarian government, the nutty ways people occupied themselves, disintegration of society.

The ending however, sucked.

Okay, I couldn't figure out how to hide what I was going to say.

The ending just had way too many religious overtones. And the book has been done before. But, well-known author, lots of publicity, and they'll publish any old drivel and hail it as the 'new'.

Maybe you already know, but that movie is based on a true story.
