Some of you now have the DVD in your hands and others are still waiting, but for those of you whom have seen it what are your thoughts on what could have been better.

My vote was acting, but i already know your in talks with some really good local actors. Not saying that it was bad, i mean it was damn good for people doing it their first time (as you and brian have said before).

I voted editing, but of course you had never edited before, so to actually make Deadlands is damned impressive. So, obviously, with Deadlands 2 there will be even better editing - it was just a couple of black frames (I think where it would be a case of two video clips appearing to be connected, but if zoomed in on the timeline there'd be a tiny gap of 1 or 2 frames - near the beginning at Brian's house), and I think I caught a frame from another piece of video that had somehow gotten in between two shots, then just the odd bit of sound mix where the music took over from the dialogue a little (but again, this was rare). Otherwise your understanding of the editing process is solid.
So it was really minor things, but like I said - for a first time editor (and filmmaker even) on such a big project - two thumbs very much fresh.
As for acting, I thought for the most part it was good (obviously some weren't meant, in life, to be actors - but hat doesn't detract), the guy who locks himself in that small room (with the tiny lock :p, loved that part) was the stand out best though.

Yeah, that would be Dave Cooperman. Although everyone gave it their best, and did a good job. Dave (Guy in Bathroom) and Melisa (women whom splits apart fighting men) were the two best Human actors in the film.
Best Zombie Actor would have to go to Lonnie Martin, the drooling, throat ripping zombie.

I think if anything is needed for improvement from DL1 to DL2, would be the acting. I take zero pride in my ability to act - 'cause.. well.. I can't act for sh*t. I tried my best, but at times it comes off a bit hokey - y'know what though? I am kinda proud that I didn't come off like a complete idiot on my first go-around. Or did I....?
I think what helped dramatically was the fact that Dj and I play "friends" in the movie and we're friends in real life - all I tried to do was act as I would had it been a real-life situation. When we would have dialouge with eachother, I just injected my 'normal' personality (bland, isn't it?) into the character since the character was supposed to be.. well.. me. :)
I still think Lonnie (as our 'drooling' zombe in the traffic jam) really embraced the 'zombie' character. He was the epitome of what we wanted our zombies to be.
Dave Cooperman came off the best as far as normal-person acting is concerned in the movie. Melissa is a great actor too, but unfortunately she's only in the movie for a minute or two arguing with Josh about his car keys. Wish we could've grabbed her for a bigger role in part 1.. there's always DL 2 though.. :D

Funny you mention Melisa (pronounced May-Lisa) for Part 2. I have been thinking about this for the last few weeks and I would love to bring her into DEADLANDS 2, if she would do it. I think Thomas and I discussed this as well trying to figure it out, but we never really finished the thought process.
If I can figure out a way to get Melisa from Part 1 to Part 2 and she is willing to do it... I will use her. Melisa is a fantastic actress.
I want to hold auditions for DEADLANDS 2 so I can see other professional actors in the area. I would really like to limit using non professionals in DEADLANDS 2 to a total of 2-3 people at most.

Khardis - I noticed that you voted in the poll, and voted for every single option (this is a public poll, so all votes are viewable). Care to explain why you voted on every selection for a movie you haven't seen yet? All of us involved in the project know you haven't rc'vd a screener of the movie.
I'm not trying to be a d*ck here, but it would be nice to get a realistic picture of what people want to see in part 2 without someone voting with no merit, which is exactly what you just did.
I have my suspicions as to why this is the case too, but I'll leave it alone. This is not the reputation system, this is a vote for people who have viewed our movie.

As you well know, I enjoyed the film tremendously. Obviously, the goal is an even better film for #2 so here are my suggestions (for what they're worth). #1 would be acting, but this has been touched upon and no further discussion is needed. Nice work for self-professed non-actors. I think that the dialogue can be improved upon for the second film also. I know, however that DJ had to basically rewrite scenes on the fly, so this can be forgiven too. The only other issue I had (as DJ and I discussed) was that the first act was moving a bit slow. Again, I understand his motives and all is well. D2 looks to be a winner to me, if these are the worst things anyone can say about the first effort.

Hello there MinionZombie!
I'm "the guy who locks himself in that small room" from "Deadlands." Thank you very much for the compliment! I had a blast working on the film, and the Gary-Brian combo couldn't be topped by anyone. It was all "fun" work for us despite the long hours through the night and into the wee hours of the morning. I'm glad you enjoyed the film and took the time to share your thoughts with the rest of the forum. I don't know how the American accent comes across with those in the UK, but any international exposure is gladly welcomed. The only regret (other than a higher budget, etc.) was not having the chance for Melisa to get more screen time, but she joined the cast at a later stage. She's really a wonderful actress, so keep her name in mind should more of her work be available in your neck of the woods. I must, of course compliment Gary Ugarek for being so professional and appreciative of the entire cast. All to often, directors for independent projects will eagerly recruit cast and crew, treat them well, but quickly drop off the face of the earth once filming is complete. Gary is a man of his word and never forgets those who stood by him and donated their time for the sake of the production. I can't say enough about his dedication, enthusiasm and remarkable promotional acumen. "Deadlands" not only became a reality, but a smashing success due to his efforts and commitment to the project. I cannot complete this posting without mentioning the same level of contribution to Gary's now famous producer Brian Wright. Brian brings so much humor and fun to the set; he always cracks me up! You should do some stand up comedy my friend- the audience will love your style! And thanks to you too MinionZombie, for keeping this forum alive and bloody!!

Ah cool man, how you doing? *internet style virtual hand shakey thing*
I'm not just saying this, but your character was one of my favourite in the film - it's great when you stand up at the front of the rabble and tell them to "STFU" ... and that dinky little latch on the door, love that bit.
Indeed, the dedication is one of the main things that makes Deadlands so damn enjoyable, the true spirit of independent film has never been so alive and it just makes me smile as it's just so pure and you can tell everyone was having a great time making it.
Aye, that Melisa girl was really good, hopefully Dj (Gary) can get her to re-appear in #2.
Cool that you dropped by, and *shucks*, thanks to the other mods too ... while I sometimes like to think I'm the supreme overlord :elol:, I'm joined by a team of guys keeping HPOTD up and running and true to it's roots.

I say acting but that mainly has to do with the look of the actors.
None of the acting was particularly strong, so the addition of more attractive people would have really helped. Don't get me wrong though, none of the acting was weak, there just wasn't any DeNiro's either. The lack of a couple of babes and studs is about the only thing that makes Deadlands look low budget. I'm not talking about infusing the cast of Dawsons Creek into Deadlands, just replacing perhaps the female lead with someone with more sex appeal would have been enough. The female lead did a servicable job though, and was believable as a mom, but imagine someone looking like Kate Hudson was playing the role. Minor gripe, but it would have made a difference to the viewer.

If I could get Fran in her DAWN years and Sarah Polley now into a 3-way we would really have a film called "THE RISING"
w00t! :D
You're not too hollywood, however, I know some people have commented on this as well but I am kind of glad it worked out as it did because they are everyday people. It's not like you see Sarah Polley as an Everyday woman... well maybe with those teeth she is. You'd think after all her paydays she would have gotten that Gnaw of hers fixed so maybe those hooks wouldn't scrape... catch my drift.

I forgive all of this in Deadlands, I'm just reponding to the thread, otherwise I wouldn't have said anything. Deadlands is a fine picture, as is. If Romero asked me what I'd change about Day of the Dead, I'd write him an essay.

Sh*t, maybe next time we could get Jenna Jameson to be in Deadlands 2 - maybe she'd raise the bar for us ugly people.
Axlish - I kinda get what you're saying, but to be honest, I do not see how better looking actors would've made a difference. If they act well, they act well. If they act horrible, they're horrible - looks won't change that.
If you're watching a movie for how 'good' the people look and not the story, then you're watching movies for the wrong reasons - at least in my eyes.
....unless it's a porn. :p

You've got it all wrong. Beautiful people are sprinkled around most movies. Lets face it, movie actors are pretty much models who can recite lines for the most part. Even if they aren't the picture of attractive, they usually have a certain cinematic quality to them, for example, Steve Buschemi (*sp). With these beautiful people being a given in most cases, only when there is a lack of beauty will I notice anything.
If you look at my original statement, I didn't think that the acting was overwhelmingly good, not bad, but not awesome enough to go with less attractive talent. DJ told me he had casting calls with better looking folks that couldn't act as well, so I forgive him. DJ and his friend were fine, they worked good as a duo, but when you toss in the guy with the trucker hat, and the mom, someone in there should have been cinematically attractive, as it would have been easier on the eyes. Again, the actors did a servicable job, so this is a minute complaint, but I feel the average viewer could have used some more pretty.
LouCipherr
10-Oct-2006, 06:50 PM
Lets face it, movie actors are pretty much models who can recite lines for the most part.
So Crispin Gover, Rosanne Barr, Robery De Niro, Uma Thurman (until Kill Bill.. :elol:), Meryl Streep, and about a million other actors and actresses I could name are just models that can recite lines? I think that's bullsh*t. I see zero cinematic quality in Rosanne, Crispin or even Uma. What I do see is excellent acting with the exeption of Rosanne, but hey, she's been in movies, so you have to count her too. De Niro ain't "cute" but he has excellent acting chops, and yes, a good screen presence, but his looks have nothing to do with his acting.
I don't disagree with you that good looking people are put in movies, but a actors or actresses 'performance' is much more important than their 'looks' - to me.
An 'average joe' doing a kick ass acting job in a well written story is much more respected by me than some plastic model or some GQ looking guy doing a half-assed job (can you say Keanu Reeves? :D).
My opinion, of course, and no one needs to share it, but if that's what people go to see nowadays in film is just 'good looking people that can recite lines' then that's yet one more example of where hollywood has failed miserably. ::shakes head::
Geezus, what did I get myself into..
I'm not referring to Deadlands by any means with this discussion, but i'm referring to movies as a whole. ;) We all know our acting ain't up to snuff, but such is life when you can't pay the people who can do the acting for you. ::shrugs:: I just can't agree that better looking people make a movie better. It just doesn't make sense. I see just as many ugly mofo's on the movie screen as I do 'lookers' - and most of the ugly ones don't even have a good screen presence - but they can act with the best of 'em.
It's all good, we can disagree, it's what makes the world go 'round, man. :D
By the way: you didn't notice that I was the 'friend' of Dj's in the movie? Now, if you're referring to me being an ugly motherf*cker, I'm not gonna disagree with you one bit - and lord knows I couldn't act my way out of a wet paper bag if I tried!

Lou, do me a favor a take a step back for a second, and please realize that I am only speaking about the one single solitary problem that I had with the film, and you are blowing it up to sound like I only like films with hotties in it. This isn't the case.
Re-read my last post, I said DJ and you worked well as a team. I think that one of the other leads could be a little better looking. You took that as me needing them to be F_able, which not the case. Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep are VERY attractive people. I mentioned Steve Buschemi in my last post, and even mentioned DeNiro in an earlier post. I said most actors are basically models that can recite lines, not all, most.
Again, I am talking about a MINUTE detail, MINUTE Lou. I am responding because I CARE that you understand me. As of your last post, you do not.
People do not go into movies expecting beautiful people, it is a given, and it is only noticed if there is a extreme lack thereof. Again, MINUTE DETAIL.
I feel as if you are trying to paint me as someone who gets pissed when there aren't 10's filling up the cast. This is merely a suggestion that I thought I'd add. The question was asked, so I answered.
EDIT: Here is a better way of putting what I am trying to say. I felt that the cast could have been more CINEMATIC

Minute detail, gotcha, but I still think it's a silly observation for any movie, not just ours. Looks don't mean jack if you're a good actor (which is why i'm safe, 'cause I can't act but I'm a looker and a half, 'eh? )
I understand, but I didn't think that the acting was overwhelmingly good. Was it good enough to get the job done? Yes. Did the acting detract from the film at all? No. Trust me, if I think it is passable, then most people will. I am a pretty harsh critic, but only if I am asked.

I've certainly seen acting a damn sight worse from other indie productions. I much prefer the matey-matey realism of you and Dj over the amateur dramatics and "I've been reading this off a page all afternoon" wooden-like goings on in a film such as Meat Market (although I own it and its sequel on DVD and quite like both of them too).
For an indie film, especially one on the budget you guys had, the acting was definately suited and in several cases beyond the call of duty, in my eyes.
And Lou, you weren't as bad as you think you were, I think you did a really good job ... now, my acting ... that is crap! :)

I was just messin' around when I said that, MZ - I mean, some of my lines I kinda think 'eeehhhh, I could've done better' but there are some parts where I look at what I did and say "whoa, that came out of me?! (in my best keanu reeves) NO WAY!" and I only say that 'cause I think sometimes I hit a line fairly decently, and that was not even close to expected by myself.
I'm an extremely harsh critic of my own work, be it acting (in this case, for the first time) or music. ;)
Axlish - my apologies if I rubbed you the wrong way, it was not intentional. Someone pissed in my cornflakes this morning at work (not literally! figure of speech!!) so I've been kinda grumpy all day. Next time I'll try and bite my tongue before I go off.

I enjoyed the movie immensely you guys were being too modest when you said your acting was horrible..you did a very good job!
I have to tell you guys your music was phenomenal I loved it!!
Yes I loved the guy in the bathroom it was sooo cool he was safe with the hook and eye lock lol!
The things I saw that I saw lacking which isnt hardly anything (it was GREAT a movie) Iknow with budget you can only do so much...well, here goes...in DL2 more dialogue with actors and more zombie action. Thats it!
I think your movie rocks!
I know you will probably tweek alot of what you did on Deadlands and you already see what you want to do different on DL2
I really like the "feel" of the movie it was aah surreal you know like real with real people like if a zombie outbreak really was happening.I like it that you used unknown actors. I liked the woman and the little boy, you dont see that in zombie movies, the only times I can think of off hand is NOTLD and Zombie Night and those had little girls in them, I just think the woman and little boy play in good with the plot!
One more thing ...can you go into more detail on their surviving the first months of the outbreaks leading up to the DL2?
THATS IT>>THATS WHAT I THINK OF YOUR WORK>>>KUDOS>>>DJ and LOU!!!!

Well I just got the DVD in the mail today, first thing I have so is EDITING WAS ABSOLUTLY AMAZING!!! It looked you hired a big "hollywood" editer.
Also perfect place to shoot the film kinda back woods-ish LOVED THE SCENERY gave you the feeling that you truely are alone in the wilderness
^^maybe im just weird like that...
make up was believable, one of my fav scenes was when the zombie is ripping out that girls throat, very good gore special effects, one thing about the make up though it reminded me of when romero when he used blue in DAWN where you used white to make the zombies skin look decayed
brought a tear to my eye :')
now you asked for honesty, and I HATE being a douche because I know everyone that was involved in thi worked there asses off
Acting was decent, especially for the little kid who pulled it off pretty well
Now the only one I voted for was Story. it didnt make sense to me, but then again I have to watch it again to truly get it since im slow like that
ending was good because it leaves you like WTF?!? and wondering
anychance you can get me in a sex scene in DL2?

What kind of name is Ugarek? Is that Slavic? (see The 'Burbs)
I must confess that I haven't seen your movie yet, DJ. But after seeing the trailer, my vote is: ALL OF THE ABOVE.
You may be many things, but a Romero you are not. Don't quit your day job, buddy. Some of you might think that i'm being cold, but I can assure you that isn't the case. I just don't want to see the kid get his heart broke.

You know Chaos. What is up with this!?!? I generally think your a nice guy but this post was very unwarranted. I have not seen the movie myself but I am sure it is probably better than what any of us can do.

Why are you making fun of something you havent even seen yet? How fair is that? You need to pick up a camera yourself and just see how hard the work is before you put someone else's work down!
Gary and Brian put alot of time and work into their film and I for one bought it and I think it is GREAT!!!
Then making fun of a persons name wowww that's like grade school stuff c'mon!
Anyway, Gary, Brian ROCK ON!!!!
i wish i could afford a copy. money is a little tight for me at the moment.

Indeed, this poll is for people who have seen it, not for bluntly-asserted trailer-based assumptions. :rockbrow:
Is it me or did tact and poise throw itself out of the window this week?

How about the forum goes on a day trip to Amsterdam and we all get laid/drunk/stoned/spanked a little and then we all retire to our beanbag chairs? :)

You love making assumptions don't you? You assume Romero is going senile, you assume my film sucks based on a trailer... I think you make an ass out of "assume" personally. Considering your tact and overall demeanor in regards to subjects like Romero's well being and my film... you have just earned yourself a top spot on my sh!t list. Chaos... You're right about one thing I am no Romero... there can be only one, and I never set out to be him. Maybe when you have actually contributed something to the indie film community you can actually comment on something, until then... shut the F**K up.
PS. My last name is Polish, my step fathers name.
PPS. You're still an asshole. :) have a nice day

I am not worried about it... I just felt like belittling him like he does to so many others.

There is one in every bunch hellsing. He probably wasn't hugged enough as a child, or his mommy didn't breast feed him. He makes up imaginary people (like a wife). He is just a trouble maker which in the case of his screen name it all fits. He won't last long here. He pisses off the wrong people he will be done.
As you know his type has come and gone. Look at the member list look at all the banned accounts if he thinks he will succeed where they failed... He better think again.

Maybe his 'type' have already gone and come back. I have the same suspicion with a couple of the 'newer' users here.
