AP: Several Dead In Lancaster County School Shooting
The Associated Press now reports several people shot to death at a school in southeastern Lancaster County, Pa., in the town of Paradise.
The Wolf Rock School is a one-room Amish school located on Mine Road. Police say the situation is now under control.
Witnesses told WGAL-TV in Lancaster that a man went into the school and took hostages. Some people in the Amish community learned about the situation and contacted police. Negotiations took place. But at some point, at least 10 shots were fired within the school, WGAL reported.
State police said the shooter is among those killed.
Numerous medical personnel were called to the scene and people were seen being evacuated by helicopter to Hershey Medical Center.
Three people were also taken by ground to Lancaster General Hospital. One of them is reportedly in critical condition.
Officials at the Hershey Medical Center confirm that victims are being admitted there. A spokeswoman says the hospital anticipats treating more than one patient, but the spokeswoman does not know how many.
NBC 10 will have details on this developing story and our John Blunt is at the shooting scene.
I'll put a fiver on it being another "crazy guy".

Saw a snippet of this on the news before dinner and thought "blimey hell" as we'd just been talking about it, the Amish bit is a new "angle" on this new criminal obsession...
I guess you just can't forsee psychos like this truck driver guy. Now, your Columbine killers, they could have been stopped if the system had worked at least a little bit in their favour, but as they were rejects of said system, they took matters into their own hands...
Next thing you know everyone will be home schooled and come out with the personal tact of Chloe O'Brian due to the lack of secondary socialisation...:rockbrow:

Ahhh ... the disaffected British youth, completed mis-handled by Labour to extraordinary lengths, now all they have to be proud about is how many ASBOs they've got ... wow, that policy worked well didn't it?
And isn't that very British of us - we keep our shootings out of our schools and strictly on the streets *nervous chuckle*...hmmm.

further info out of a press breifing.
the guy was a 40-ish year old local, with a wife and kids. aparently this was all due to some sort of grudge he held against either the school or a person at the school. he flex cuffed his hostages and had them form a row, while he barricaded all of the buildings entrances.
Aparently he opened fire once he found out the poice were preping to assault the building.
there are conflicting reports as to how many dead and wounded. but i'm thinking that most of the wounded were headshot, so the number of fatalities is going to rise.

that's funny.
The shooting happened in Paradise township, the next town to the East (2 miles over, if that) is Gap. The Gap Amish are the ones who were busted in the 90's for selling crack.
One perhaps comforting thing out of this. I'm watching streaming TV from the local NBC affiliate on scene. apparently the first responders really stepped up on this. i'm looking at three med-evac choppers on the ground right now taking the wounded out. that means they pulled helicopters from Philadelphia and Harrisburg to get these kids to Neuro-trauma centers.
that took some serious do-ing.
update from CNN
ARADISE, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- A 32-year-old truck driver walked into an Amish schoolhouse Monday, binding and shooting three girls execution-style before killing himself, police said Monday.
Seven other girls were wounded in the attack, which police said appeared to be a revenge killing for an incident that occurred two decades ago.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young female victims, and this is close to his residence. That's the only reason we can figure that he went to the school," said Commander Jeffrey Miller, Pennsylvania State Police.
"It's a horrendous crime scene," he said. (Watch how the gunman got in and what he did -- 7:44 Video)
The shooting took place at Wolf Rock School in Paradise, a school run by the Amish community with about 27 students in grades 1 through 8. One of the children died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. (Watch police investigate shooting scene -- 1:00)
The wounded girls were taken to several hospitals in the central Pennsylvania area, some of them with gunshot wounds to the head. The victims range in age from 6 to 13, he said.
The gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, drove a commercial milk truck, said Miller. He was not Amish, was not previously wanted by authorities and had no known criminal history. The Bart, Pennsylvania, resident had three children, and left several notes for his family "along the lines of suicide notes," Miller said.
The commissioner said Roberts had worked a shift that ended about 3 a.m. Monday and taken his children to their bus stop before beginning his rampage.
Police said he had barricaded himself in the schoolhouse with two-by-four and two-by-six pieces of lumber, which he brought to the scene in a borrowed pickup truck. He did not respond to efforts by police to make contact with him.
Gunman let boys go
Miller said that during the attack, Roberts apparently told students to line up in front of the blackboard. He began to tie his female captives' feet together. He let the 15 boys in the classroom leave.
Miller said Roberts also allowed an adult female who was pregnant to leave with three other adult females who had infant children with them.
The teacher who was released was able to alert authorities, Miller said. Miller said Roberts called his wife while he was inside the school. She said that he told her that he couldn't go on any more, and he was getting revenge for something that happened 20 years ago.
"Apparently, there was some sort of an issue in his past that for some reason, he wanted to exact revenge against female victims. That's all I can tell you right now," Miller said.
Lancaster County's 911 Web site reported dozens of emergency vehicles -- including at least nine ambulances -- were dispatched to Bart Township shortly before 11 a.m. for a "medical emergency." The Lancaster County emergency communications Web site showed 20 incident calls listed to the normally quiet Bart Township at 10:48 a.m.
Shortly after the attack, men, women and girls in traditional Amish clothing gathered in small groups outside the country schoolhouse along a dirt road. Horse-drawn carriages could be seen in a nearby parking lot.
The attack was the nation's third deadly school shooting in a week.

yes more guns, thats the anwser. Having cops in school and armed gaurds would only lead to more pissed off kids as the majority of teens are generaly anti authority. As being a high school senior I know it would piss me off. Talk to your kids adults, shoving guns in their faces isn't going to make them feel any better.
If a kid wants to go to school and kill other kids, he can make a bomb from the chemicals in a chemistry room, he can smuggle in a knife, a gun, explosives, or simply smash another kids head into the concrete wall untill it's all goey.
Heres a idea, shove more riddlin and other pills in your kids throats so you don't have to pay attention to them! That will do the trick!

here a plan. next year we'll give everyone, who would like and can legally own one, a brand new H&K G36, and see what happens.
guns + schools = homicide on a level and tempo unseen outside of Hiroshima, Darfur, and perhaps Thermoplae.

Then Talk to them, and make sure other parents talk to other kids. Any person that commits these type of actions is mentaly damaged, and if you can identify them before something like that, I think it would be a hell of a lot better then putting 20 cops in a class room and trying to intimidate a mentaly messed up teenager

Putting armed officers in school-rooms will inevitably cause more senseless violence.
Hell, a kid can grab a gun on any city corner cheaper than he/she can buy crack.
Some book-head or Jock gets pissed, buys a gun, rebels (not thinking clearly due to anger) gets shot by one of your liason officers and next thing you know, there are MORE victims (family & friends of both officer and irrational bratty kid that thinks a gun makes him King ToughGuy)...
Guns are not the answer.
I'm not "anti-gun", I own several, but I don't think you should use them on punks that get pissed at the world because Judy wont go to the dance with him (or whatever).
Education and communication is a better way. That's why these kids are turning out to be the little monsters they are.....a lack of communication and education.

The last gun I bought was in Memphis, Tn (a little .380) and the waiting time was about 30 minutes..... they did the background check right there - All I needed was photo ID (DL) and soc. card.... this was a few years ago. If the laws have changed again, I don't know. (I know in Mississippi you can get them same day as well. or could)
But, guns can be bought on the street by thugs that sell stolen guns. A kid can get pissed, buy a gun, and head back to shool within an hour if they know where to go and who to deal with.

Last I checked, it was illegal to buy pot, cocaine, herion, acid, etc. in the United States. Doesnt change the fact that it is a multi-billion dollar industry. If someone wants to get a gun, they can get a gun, regardless of laws.

Then why try to change the laws if they don't matter in the first place?
Neil
03-Oct-2006, 09:02 AM
The simple truth is, with freely available fire arms, your right to own a weapon (and most likely never use it) gives every nutter, rapist and psycho the right to own and potentially use it :(
If someone wants to get a gun, they can get a gun, regardless of laws.
If they really want to, yes, but there's degrees of difficulty. For example is it easier for a disfunctional teenager to shoot his class mates, by going home and unlocking his dads gun cabinet, or finding the right people in the right place at the right time...?
Yes, if someone really wants to get a gun of course they could... But if we take myself for example, I wouldn't have a clue where to get one. And I suspect that's the case of most people in this country.
Now, I'm of course not suggesting we're right and your wrong etc. But what I am suggesting is simply using your argument is not fair or productive.
A kid can get pissed, buy a gun, and head back to shool within an hour if they know where to go and who to deal with.
What's your gut feeling? Most school shootings involve legally or illegally owned weapons? Bet you most are legally owned...

Which puts me back at communication and education.

addressing point one: 1) the number of gun related school crimes as far as i know isn't on the rise, this is just the news filling a programming vaccum. Liason officers are proven not to work, they're effectively just glorified security officers. who bleed the school budgets.
2) what you have to do is actually look at school shootings. they break into two types generally. the first being "in-house" attacks perpitrated by students. these are of course more common. and the second type, nutters with guns. in truth really nothing can be done to prevent these short of massive public mental health screenings, which wouldn't go over well.
The first type of these attacks are preventable, by actually funding schools, and allowing them to employ actual mental health professionls, not jaggoff guidance counselors.
addressing point two: no they aren't the TV just pontificates about it more often. think about the **** you did in HS and got away with. in turth was it any worse than what's going on right now? no, not really. it's just the news making a big fuss of it.
I'd be almost positive that the guns used by the kids are snuck out of their parents closet or the top drawer of a bedside table.

exactly.

absolutely, but to be fair. nothing will stop people like this. if someone is intent on commiting a mass murder, be it with a gun, an sword, a plane, or a car. they're going to do it. we've seen that time and time again.
the issue here is to focus on both the crime and how it was commited, not the tools used. because in essence they're sterile.
last I checked you needed to be 18 buy a gun and there was a3 day waiting period. If you are pissed after 3 days chances are nothing will prevent you from doing whats in your head.
not in pa. in pa it works like this.
-you pay a $5 fee so that the store can runn you drivers' license, or state issued Id through the local sherriffs office.
-the sherriff on the phone runs your info through VICAP, NCIC, and a local warrants check.
-if you come back green, your good to buy and go.
-it all takes about 10 minutes, if the clerk is running slow.
when i bought my .38, i was in and out of the store in 15 minutes.

Agreed, but a spur of the moment decision - to maybe kill your school mates - is someone harder to carry out if you cannot just go home and simply get a gun out of a draw...
Allowing guns to be easily owned, unfortunately means they can be easily used/mis-used...
Don't know what the answer is though...

The Columbine thing.....(and a recent plot foiled here in Missouri) were planned for a while and not spur of the moment. Those are the ones that worry me more. The spur of the moment wouldn't even explain the freak from yesterday in Amish country....he'd been harboring violence toward little girls for 20 years and finally snapped.

Trust me, the Amish already have guns, they shoot from the age they can get a deer permit in MI, the girls get permits too, tho I think the boys actually tend to get the deer. Bow hunting as well.
An amish family friend used to go to montana for Elk also, they rent a bus and go out there.
