Team America

The movie was alright the first time I saw it but after having to deal with nearly an entire year of people constantly quoting/singing it I completely despise it. It gets old realy quick when you hear the "America; f**k yeah!" song being screamed by people at least five times a night every time you go to a party.

Napoleon Dynamite is fudging legendary. I hadn't heard of it, and likewise didn't know of the "cult" around it when I saw it, and I watched it right after having a complete barney with one of my housemates, but we all sat down and we all laughed our asses off, I couldn't breathe it was so funny. We then watched it about twice a week from then on, I haven't watched it since, seen bits of it, but haven't watched it since - it was kind of the defining movie of my final year at uni, so it kinda belongs (to me anyway) in that period of time.

Equilibrium ... blatantly someone was jizzing over 1984 and The Matrix, but if you want an easy bit of stylish action you can't go wrong here, some of the action is just fantastic - and it's nowhere near as pretentious as The Matrix films became. Generally an enjoyable flick.

Titanic - yeah I don't care for it either, the only good bit is when it sinks - and you know it's coming - AND then you realise you were enjoying the cinematic retelling of a disaster that sent many people to their deaths ... and then you feel hollow inside...plus it was during DiCaprio's "cute" period, he's a good actor now as he's grown into himself, but back then he was all tweenager pin up, and it was annoying...

Rocky Horror Picture Show is a freakin' cinematic classic, 'nuff said.

Akira - superb anime, it's the starting point - in my opinion - for anyone getting into anime.

Silent Hill - the best videogame/movie conversion there's ever been ... but there was far too much "people walking around scary places and looking kinda disturbed" for me, it needed a swifter pace and generally needed to be tighter, but it was pretty good, especially for a videogame/movie conversion.

Cabin Fever - yes, Eli Roth was very much in his "my first movie, ergo I must reference all my favourites" period, but I love this movie. It's a horror film for horror fans made by a horror fan, and it shows. It feels like the 1980s came back from the grave and set it's bloody horror-movie-with-tits-flopping-around feet down in the new millennium.

hmmm...

Films that I really hate ... not sure how popular they are, but:

White Chicks - it's retarded, plus it's a double standard - if it was white guys dressing up as black girls and it was called "Black Chicks", it'd be racist - ergo, I spit on this movie and the retarded double standards it represents. Plus said "White Chicks" just look wrong...

Yawn04 - a bunch of know-nothing teenagers jizzed all over this running zombie arse fest. Nice cinematography and well put together in the edit suite, but the story is utterly abominable, SHEER SH*T COVERED PANTS.

Can't really think of any others right now ... I'll keep thinkin'

I think Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are really overrated.

Johnny Depp isn't really that good of an actor. His role as Jack Sparrow was funny the first time around, but all the quirky movements and facial expressions just put him into Jack Black territory the second time around (as in: Ok, I've had enough of you, go away).

Besides all of his roles are almost identical. Strange and quirky. Very rarely does he actually ACT.

Tim Burton is good. But not as good as people say.

beg to differ. it's hard to believe raoul duke, ed wood and edward scissorhands were played by the same guy. totally different characters with really individual traits.

indeed those are all strange and quirky roles, but i think they are sufficiently different from each other to warrant some skill in successfully pulling it off.

although it has to be said he has a stock sulky mumbling dude performance he falls back on sometimes, see; the ninth gate, secret window, blow etc

i love beetlejuice, batman, edward scissorhands and ed wood, but i get the feeling tim burton has a decent production design team more than anything else. also danny elfman (or howard shore emulating danny elfman in the case of ed wood)

Agreed, Depp is a talented actor, and when in his particularly most noted roles you honestly believe that he's the character.

When watching Ed Wood you're looking at the character on screen and you're thinking "Ed Wood", likewise with POTC, you're thinking "Jack Sparrow", not "Johnny Depp".

To say he's a dull actor because he plays "quirky" characters is just daft, not to mention in the same league of flimsy arguments like "it sucks".

People actually LIKED Cabin Fever?

I thought that was quite possibly one of the worst movies ever made. I was recovering from surgery and kind of loopy from perkeset and that still sucked.

I personally despise the Grudge (remake). All my friends were like, "oh it's so scary" "oh, it's so good" I could not ****ing stand it. It was just awful, the story just dragged so much...

Bull****, man. Ed Wood is one of his worst roles ever. He doesn't play it well at all. Same with Pirates. It's so over the top that it's fun for small amounts of time, but a whole film is just a crash and burn basis.

Johnny Depp is todays most overused actor, and the fact that he never really changes his acting style just makes him so less endureable. He has pulled off some good parts. But alot of his roles is just "Depp doing his thing" and not actually acting. Willy Wonka, for instance.

I thought Depp was okay as Wood. Landau was absolutely stunning as Lugosi.

some good points, but i wouldnt say ed wood was an OTT performance in the way pirates was. i dunno, raoul duke was an OTT performance, but it was good. i think the thing is he gets cast in rather lurid, unusual roles and so he devises a performance to match it.

be interested to know who you think is a good actor, though...

I agree with Nick... Johnny Depp was farkin great as Ed Wood. Possibly my favorite role he's every done. I don't see how he was "over the top" with his performance. The movie was supposed to be funny/wacky and make Ed Wood look loopy... which Depp did a good job achieving.

Exactly. Depp didn't hold a candle to Landau.

To perfectly sum up Depps bad acting in Ed Wood, just watch the scene where they view the stock footage in the beginning. Definetly not GOOD acting.

I hate and will not watch he LOTR live action-- I did like the cartoons though..

Pretty FN Woman--- Dave Chapelle's version from his show was more believable.

Titanic-- I already knew how it would end..where was the suspense?!?!?

Most John Woo films--- over acting, and poorly cast-- at least his American movies...

Any Nick Cage movie-- except Raising Arizona-- He would never NEVER become anything if he wasn't a Coppolla..

Any feel good flicks-- Rudy, Remember the Titans, Rainman, etc--- Don't try so hard to root for the underdag, and I may like the flick...

Mind you, Nic Cage changed his name so he'd have to forge his career himself, rather than via the name Coppola, so he didn't just use the name to get where he is. Some folk probably knew who he was, but likewise other folk might not have known...

Now, Sofia Coppola, as talented as the gal is (saw her first two flicks and they were great), she wouldn't be working with Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray in freakin' Japan on her second movie if she wasn't a Coppola. At least she has talent and is putting it to good use, but if she was just anybody else, guaranteed she'd still be struggling or be nowhere near as successful...

Where were we?

Totally agree. He sucks. And he just seems like he's a major asshole.
And Nic Cage has turned into a lame cartoon. 8mm was cheesy and predictable. The only good thing about that was the porn kid.

I know what you mean now. Never had it though. In NYC we have "ethnic" foods in different neighborhoods. There used to be a lot of Irish people in my area. Not as much now but many stores stock food from Ireland like Heinz beans, Marmite, those freeze dried peas and Heinz sauce. 99% of America are never exposed to "foreign" stuff except for maybe Spanish stuff (which is not even that foreign anymore). We have Irish, Spanish, Kosher Jewish food, Jamaican, Asian and Indian in stores here. Except for the disgusting Gefilte fish and Chicken Fat Butter (Schmaltz) Jewish food rocks.

I like liverwurst. I know its gross, but I like it anyway. To me, its like a warm blanket at Mom's house.
