I was about to say man, this footage is as old as my grammie. MZ surely you got the Trilogy of the Dead box set?

MinionZombie

Capn ... pfft, hell no I don't have the box set, why waste money on that sack of crap with the wrong version of Night of the Living Dead in it? And, if memory serves, Dawn of the Dead was still cut on the version in the box set.

I've found the best editions of all the dead movies are Region 1, and therefore I own the Region 1 versions (except the Millennium Edition of Night, ain't got around to that yet as I got Night on DVD (with a gheay new soundtrack, sheesh!) for £1.50 when Benson's World started up.

I have the 4-disc ultimate Dawn, the 2-disc Divimax Day and the Unrated R1 Land.

Laserdisc was before my time, lol ... or at the very least, before my wallet's (or more accurately pocket money's) time.

I'll download it with KeepVid, if only YouTube allowed you to download the sh*t you've already downloaded to stream anyway!

I am not exactly sure if you are saying you cant Dl it. but heres a cool lonk anyway

Laserdisc players were insanely expensive.

Nah I can download it, I'm just complaining that YouTube doesn't have it's own link on it's own site (like PutFile or ThatVideoSite has). KeepVid works for me, but the synchronicity tends to crap out I've found ... weird.

Speaking of Laserdisc, I still get a giggle out of Kevin Smith proclaiming "f*ck DVD!" when doing the Laserdisc commentary for "Chasing Amy", he recently wrote in Total Film 'f*ck HD/Blu-Ray' ... f*ckin' A. :p

Was that the recent (2004) DiviMax one?

MinionZombie

Nope, I have the DiviMax Day DVD, and it doesn't have that making of on it. What it does have is a new making of with lots of interviews intercut with clips and behind the scenes stuff. Then there's about half an hour of Tom Savini behind the scenes footage, but that making of, which is linked to in this thread is not on the DiviMax DVD.

This one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Day-Dead-Joseph-Pilato/dp/B000EBFOTW/sr=8-1/qid=1171978012/ref=pd_ka_1/026-2321470-7445240?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) i think man..

Erm, I think it must be the standard Anchor Bay Day DVD:

http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=677

The versions of Day on DVD are listed there, and quite possibly the Arrow Films R0 SE UK 2 disc of Day seems to have it on there (20 minutes behind the scenes, as compared to the alternate "behind the scenes" feature you get on the Divimax one, which is around 30 minutes, as is just clips from Savini's videos edited together).

And the laserdisc...

http://www.lddb.com/cover/ld/08401-08500/08457.jpg

I found this interesting though...

"The anchor bay dvd and the special edition laser both came out about the same time and both have an extra on called behind the scenes with day of the dead. But there are some parts of behind the scenes on the dvd that are not on the laser, and there are some parts on the laser that are not on the dvd. Also there is a second disk with the laserdisc that has a Day of the dead video journal which is another behind the scenes. Aspect ratio 1.85:1
Running time is 102mins"

I'm not positive, but at first glance (I have the DVD) it looks like a port of the Divimax extras. I'll give it a look tonight, unless someone beats me to it. The only selling point of this DVD is the new commentary with Nicotero, Berger, Everett Burell and another FX guy. Literally nonstop talking.

So, please let me know before I do a search to buy thanks guys!

Deb, just make sure the version you order has the KNB commentary and the behind the scenes documentary. This is the best release of Day thus far.

I'd personally recommend the Region 1 Divimax edition - 2 discs, has a commentary by Gar/Savini/others, has a new 'making of' with interviews and a 31 minute behind the scenes doc (edited from Savini's own footage from back then) and some other things.

The one Capn is on about is the Region 2 version of the same DVD (just with a different commentary, if only commentaries were downloadable like movies, games and CDs are).

I must be blind then! I'll check mine again :dead:

So as Axlish suggested this appears to be exactly the same as the UK 2 disc version except that has an additional(? or alternative ?) commentary track?

MinionZombie

Not an additional track, I think the Nicotero etc commentary replaces the GAR & Co track  ... weird.

I'll have to check it later, forgot to last night. Just guessing but I'd say that it has less features than the divimax, simply because Arrow Films usually skimp out.

The Anchor Bay Divimax is by far the best edition out there, hands down.

Thanks guys I will look for this next time I am out shopping hopefully my little burgh will have it in the bargain bin and if not I will do a search and buy it online. Just checked and the new UK DVD does have the 20 minute Behind The Scenes featurette made by Tempe Video. It is the exact same featurette included on the FIRST Anchor Bay DVD release. However, as noted in an earlier post, the laserdisc contains a longer version.

The UK DVD also has The Many Days of Day of the Dead borrowed from the Anchor Bay Divimax release. The Divimax also has a B.T.S. featurette but it is simply a compilation of 31 minutes of B.T.S. footage.

This Arrow UK DVD marks the 2nd faux 2-disc releasefor a Romero film, as both discs are SINGLE layer. The other one they did this with was Martin. Their prior release of Martin was a single layer disc, with MORE, thats right, MORE extras they their newer faux 2-disc set.

I'm guessing he means that since each disc is only a single layer DVD5, all the content could have quite happily co-existed on a single dual-layered DVD9 without sacrificing quality.

Its like implying that getting two individually wrapped socks is somehow better than picking up a pair. Not so for those in the know!

I get it... I think :)

Does that mean the image/sound quality is worse in the Arrow version to the Anchor Bay digimax version? (as it's half the size)

In a word, yes, but it isn't due to the size. AB used their Divimax processing for their release, whereas Arrow's version is more of a run of the mill transfer. It looks better than Anchor Bay's first version, but not nearly as good as the Divimax. I only wanted the Arrow release because of the commentary. There are other things to consider regarding disc size. The Divimax disc has DTS (around 500MB), DD 5.1 (around 300MB), 2 commentaries, and a 2.0 mix.

Get this...

Arrow released a version of Martin back around 03-04, pretty much identical to the old Anchor Bay version released in the states, except it lacked the commentary. It more than made up for the lack of commentary by including a German made documentary that was shot on the set of Dawn of the Dead in 1978, prior to Roy Frumkes team showed up to film Document. Although it is dubbed over in German, it is still a facinating watch, and something that isn't talked about enough in Romero circles. It made the Martin disc worth getting, even if you already had the USA AB release.

Fast forward to late last year. Arrow announces a new release of Martin, except this time, no German documentary. Thats cool I guess, they lost the rights or whatever. Ok, what else... It'll be the same features as the new Lion's Gate DVD, widescreen with the 10 minute featurette. Ok, cool. Here is the kicker, they call it a 2 disc special edition, and put out two single layer discs! Their 2 disc "special edition" is not even up to snuff with their original release!

Another kicker. One of their promotional people said they'd send me two copies of their new "special edition" to give away, in exchange for some advertising on my Martin site. Never got the copies, and after they said they'd send the copies, they never replied to any of my emails again. Lousy company all around, IMHO.

I've got the Martin DVD with that German-dubbed documentary, indeed, an interesting watch (despite the uber-annoying German dubbing) ... and I remember renting the 2-disc version, the 2nd disc is absolutely beyond pathetic, how on earth it requires a disc on it's own I have no idea. The feature on the 2nd disc is literally under 10 minutes - and that's it for the 2nd disc!

Precisely the reason why I didn't shell out the 16 nuggets for the 2 disc edition. The solo disc release is by far the best and yeah, that German featurette is rock solid. They should've smuggled it onto the Dawn Ultimate Edition box set.
