London has been a strong candidate ever since GTA 4 was announced, but rumors of New York have grown stronger. The latest case for a New York setting seems to be a topic at NeoGAF forums (topic has since been removed), about a 80's New York-based band called Breakdown being contacted by Rockstar Games for licensing rights to some tracks. Drawing a conclustion between this and GTA4 being set in Liberty City is rather far fetched, yet in any case, the setting page will be refined if the trailer does gives us an indication of GTA 4's setting. Else you're free to keep speculating. Unofficial GTA site.
A post in a forum (that has since been removed) that claimed to have insider knowledge on Grand Theft Auto IV has tipped New York as the city of choice. With both the Xbox 360 and PS3 releases of Grand Theft Auto IV penned in for October this year, the PR machine is already revving its engine. We reported last month that the first ever trailer of the game will be released to the world wide web at the end of this month on March 29. Will it be set in New York? The rumour apparently came from someone involved in the music soundtrack of the game, that seemed to be going for a NYC feel. All eyes on March 29 people. You'll find the trailer here on CVG as soon as it goes live. Computer and Video Games site.
I could pull up another dozen quotes all saying the same thing. If GTAIV is to be set in New York, it can only be the late 70's - like I predicted, punks, disco kids and power cuts. One can only hope.

Hmmm, but I thought Liberty City was their version of New York? Or are they setting it in a real city this time?
I still would really like a 1970s setting as they haven't done that period yet, and it's open to so many cool new things to cover...porno 'staches for one.

Aye, a real city would be quite funky, but also strange at the same time as we're used to how it's been done thus far, I'd forgotten about the trailer, what with all my excitement over STALKER, so it's snuck up on me, which is nice, so I'll get to see this trailer soon ... now to wait 3 friggin' days for what will most likely be a load of text and about 2 shots...it had so better NOT be though, with a month-long count down, there'd better be a PROPER trailer ... those possible bastards...

EXACTLY ... if it's that sort of sh*t I will personally sh*t in a box and send it to them, I HATE those kind of trailers with a passion, for one they're so cliched and over-used, for two they're f*cking lame-ass cock-blocking cock teases. I can get the same "oh yeah, it's coming sometime soon I guess" from any one of the bajillion websites talking about it on the net, I don't need some white text on black background followed by a local and maybe one cock-flicking shot to tell me the same pointless low level of information!

Yes. :p
IMHO I think a future setting would be naff, what makes GTA so great is that it's either present day or set in the past, so it can take the mick out of that time, or respond to things happening while it was being made, in a future setting you lose all of that...
A delay, on GTA4? I doubt it, they've always stuck to their release dates before, haven't they?
I was always getting GTA on the PC, so with previous installments I never noticed a lack of info until a while before it came out, to me it was always months and months before it was coming out, cos it'd be friggin' AGES until the console version got ported to PC...then sh*t got real.

It wil never be based off a real city, it go against what they have always said about it being real, which they try to distance themsleves against that.
The 70s would be cool, but the 60s and running over hippies would be cooler :D
There never wil bea delay, there stock holder would be pissed. After all it is there biggest cash cow and with all the problems they had of late they need money .

Unfortunately, it's the most logical conclusion. If the game was that far into completion then we would've had a trailer a lot sooner. It was a P$3 exclusive to begin with so f**k knows how it's going!

No no no... Rockstar intentionally keeps people in the dark on their games until very close to release. I don't know why, but they tend to do it a lot. I actually think it helps with sales because so many people become so curious with it.

And I much prefer your Sid James to your Sid Vicious any day, Capn. Lovable cockney perv, or an arrogant, spotty-faced nobhead? :sneaky:
I also wanna see what they mean by 'changing the rules', how is it gonna change? Hopefully no crappy "dance" missions, no bloody remote control missions, no bloody pilot license bollocks (if you've already done it in previous games, leave it at that, or just show a montage of the character flying and then you have your license, we've already got our license to fly, just show us the character getting one!).

Personally, I'd love to see them put their take on Back To The Future and create their own version of a Hill Valley. It would have to include three different time periods you could choose from, not to mention multiple "alternate realities" of each one.

Well, as you can see I'm keeping it in the Sid's. Vicious may be an arrogant knobhead but he is the king of punk, the KING. Even though he couldn't play a note, he contributed to one of the greatest rock records of all time. He the man. So is James though. <hehe> :sneaky:

A Russian main character? ... *sigh* ... not really digging it to be honest.
The graphics look great, but you don't get a look at any people, or any destruction, so you still learn piss all about the game.
I think doing a whole month-long count down to a trailer was a big mistake, builds up people's expectations way too high.
As for Liberty City - AGAIN - hmmm.
Somewhere else in the 1970s would have been far better, but now this is basically GTA3 all over again, that was present day Liberty City, now it's the same again...hmmm.
First impressions aren't great, nowhere near the same mouth watering (if any) as I had with Vice City and San Andreas...still, at least they've FINALLY got it onto a NEW engine. ABOUT F*CKING TIME.
Irrespective, it'll sell like hot cakes covered in glue that makes you into a sex god...

Maybe they have some dynamic new script that's really gonna blow away. It better had cos I too ain't diggin' the Russian. I just hoped that they would come up with something a bit more eye pleasing and epic. The game will probably be amazing anyhow but I wanted to know about the new features in GTA and that clip described nothing.
MikePizzoff
30-Mar-2007, 01:03 PM
The fact that it takes place in modern day Liberty City again doesn't bother me considering the fact that it is complete different; not even remotely the same as it was in GTA3. Now it actually looks like NYC with Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Metlife building, Chrysler building, etc. Although, I am disappointed that it's not going to have country area's like San Andreas had.
I'm not surprised there wasn't any gameplay footage or anything. They never show anything like that this long before release.
Now we just have to wait for three screenshots to be released. Probably of stuff like the sun setting behind the State of Liberty, a newspaper blowing across the street in Harlem, and a guy holding a gun in a car.

heh, guess im the only one that liked the trailer, i think the overall game looks way diffrenet than the vibe of 3 thru sanandreas, this looks like there trying to be realistic but the past games have allways been a little tongue in cheek, though the (get a life) bit made me laugh, i think it looks graphically impressive, kidna reminded me a little of half lfie 's style meets farentheits, shame theres no gameplay though, still i wasnt to bothered about thsi but now i think i may have to get it.
-one thing occurs to me though, since this is rpesent day you know that companys like warner and gonna make em put loads of **** music on the radio stations just like in tony hawks american ****eland.:barf:
MinionZombie
30-Mar-2007, 02:17 PM
The soundtrack will probably be like it was on GTA3, modern stuff and a lot of old stuff on stations that play that kinda thing, although I'm hoping for more variety in the soundtrack, as often is the case there are stations you just skip by completely as all the music sucks.
Yeah the graphics look good, but in comparison to the previous entries, that isn't really hard to achieve the "wow" or even "ooh" factor from us punters ... I wanted 1970s setting, they haven't done that before, and I reckon that would have been riper for the picking.
What next - GTA5 in a new Vice City?
Even if Liberty City is going to look different, it's still Liberty City, which has been videogamed-up twice already.
And typically enough, 1 measily minute and no hint at gameplay or features or anything, 30 day countdown for that? F*ck-the-piss-off. :bored:
I'll blatantly get it, like you all will, it'll be a good game no doubt, but thus far I'm underwhelmed...

its like...over half a year from release, what did you expect?
although i have to say that character model looked gash compared to the rest of the game.
maybe it is actually new york, as opposed to liberty city? the city in the video looked like actual new york to me, with that slice of cake building & the statue, etc.

I dont mind liberty city,it was awesome in GTA3,all it needs is the ability to go outside of it,and also to be able to go into most of the buildings, and not have them empty or sparse on the inside. And fill the world with tiny little details that you wouldnt even notice without looking (such as the newspapers in GTA3,i was impressed by how they were sucked along by the draught as a car went past, and how the shadows altered with the sun position)

For those of you dissapointed by the setting, look at it this way. Every GTA game ending in a number has taken place in Liberty City. GTA, GTA2, GTA3, and now GTAIV have taken place in the same area. BUT--their sequels have taken place in different time zones/places. You can always look forward to a new setting for this generation of consoles.
MinionZombie
30-Mar-2007, 07:01 PM
Yeah, it's got Liberty City written all over it (like "Liberteen").
Anyway, I've rewatched the trailer some more now (I saw it when I'd just gotten up early and was all tired out and grumpy), I like it much better now, I just still wish they'd gone for a 1970s setting, what they could have done would have been soooooo cool. A new Liberty City, okay fine ... but if it had been in the 1970s that would have been good - can you imagine how many Saturday Night Fever references they could have whacked up in that bitch?! COME ON! :(
Anyway, looks rather LUSH, but there's a lot of buildings that are just facias and nothing more, a nice looking block. When are we going to get windows you can break and buildings you can f*ck up and so on ... not all buildings, but some would be nice.
And aye, I want more interiors that are more varied, not like in TC:NYC where there were types of buildings and they were all the same inside ... at least there were many you could enter anyway...
So my feelings towards the trailer have increased since this morning's bleary-eyed-and-grumpy viewing, I just wish it was a 1970s settings - just think of how f*cking cool that could have been - you could have had a whole mission that was like Assault on Precinct 13 (yes I know that film was in LA, but still - 1970s)...
Ah well ... they've FINALLY got a new engine for it - about friggin' time, I just hope they don't suck it dry like they did with the last one, there was not enough change over one engine, they should have changed engine sometime before this even, say mid-way through the previous run of games...I duno...anyway, new GTA ... 'bout time.
Hopefully they'll release information on a steady flow from now on, give us some details to look forward to and such ... and I still maintain that a 30 day countdown to a 53second trailer (excluding end text) was completely gheay (yes, as in stupid) and pointless, just release the bastard and let folk not get their hopes up so high and start expecting certain things, geez!
Never thought of it that way, Coin ... good point.
Anyway, I certainly look forward to a new setting on the new gen. While GTA3 was good, GTA: Vice City was f*cking superb.

San Andreas ruled it though... will it be as good?
While San Andreas has the scope, it didn't have the story, nor the sheer fun of Vice City. Vice City had a fantastic soundtrack, it was vibrant, it was enjoyable, the story was interesting (so much so I replayed it through a few times). I've only been through San Andreas once and only just recently replayed the bit after getting your pilot's license again, and it just wasn't that interesting, just something to fill the gap whilst I was waiting for STALKER to turn up...
The scope of San Andreas, plus the story, vibrancy and sheer fun of Vice City - that's what you want.
Interestingly, did anyone see that New York official types are up in arms about the setting being New York? I wonder where else they might have in the game, surely they're going the suburbs, like Queens - ooh, perhaps they'll have Long Island - like they whole thing, that'd be cool. Maybe you could drop by on the Griffins or the Barones...:p

The 70's would be kind of cool, but at the same time there isnt a huge variety of quality vehicles that i'd like to drive from that period. The city looks awesome in that trailer,it'll be quite interesting when you know the layout of the place, but everything is super fleshed out so hardly recognisable!i reckon they'll make the city a lot bigger as well, cos when you complete GTA3 and then have a drive round, its actually quite a small place

It'd be so much better if the protagonist either already has a pilot's license etc, or you watch them in a pre-rendered video achieve one. Because players of GTA have already gained the skills in previous entries, why do we need to keep regaining them?
Also - in San Andreas, why does your driving skill start at piss-poor and then gradually goes up. CJ was like what, mid-twenties, surely he already knows how to drive!
Hopefully we don't get any of that shiite in the new GTA, because those sort of missions were just REALLY LAME and just got in the way of having fun.
