I was watching some discovery whatever channel discuss the science of things like train wrecks and the like and was amazed. Theres actually someone out there calculating whether its cheaper to let the trains malfunction and kill people or whether its cheaper to make it safe for everyone to ride the trains. The case was one in the UK where the conductor wasn't at fault it was a safety hazard that wasn't rectified and hundreds of people were hurt and many died. I just can't believe the government allows that to happen. Its like saying its okay to let people die because their family will class action your ass and win a settlement but still... please by all means continue to let others die because its cheaper to pay that lawsuit than to let people live!

How the hell do you put a price on people like that?

There are accountants (people who do math) for companies that have the task of finding out if its cheaper to fix a safety hazard or to pay off the inevitable lawsuit against the company when that safety hazard kills and/or injures people...

they're essentially finding out the cost of human life for various businesses

and the worst part is the government doesn't punish the companies that knowingly allow safety hazards to kill people ...beyond of course allowing the lawsuits which for me isn't enough because its basically planning to kill people in a round-about sorta way
