I was reading in the another post about Americans being prudes about nudity and i'm just curious why does everyone think so? Why are Euros so free wheeling about nudity?
Personally I think in this country it would be dangeous to have public nudity. Literally dangerous. I grew up next to a French family with two girls my agae and their family would swim naked together. They even had a birthday party with mostly Europeans and invited me and my family... everyone there was naked except for my family. Just a little odd to us. I think if we had public nudity at beaches it would attract the wrong kind of people. I'm not saying nudists are bad people. I've gone naked to lakes and went to a nudist 'camp' with a friend of mine and even went to a scientific research place that has hot springs the public can use clothing optional lol... there were some creepy mofos at all of the places I went to its just not the place to take kids or let teens go.
I dont know if people in other places are like people i've known here. Where they're willing to date a woman who has kids so they can sexually abuse the children. Where they take jobs to be close to kids to abuse them. Where men go walking around with a camera in one hand taking photos up young girls skirts. I just feel like we're too corrupt for nudity. And lets face it there's good naked and there's bad naked ... bad naked is scary.

The USA are far from pudes, check out basic cable.Public nudity would be a very bad idea, look at the sickos that go after kids in their own bedrooms, if they were showing it on the street imgine how ugly it could get.
to quote some muslim leader roughly "if you leave uncovered meat out do you blame the cat for eating it?"
for the recored we all know i disagree with muslims.

A lot of times sexual repression is a cause of sexual irregular behavior....so saying a more relaxed
attitude would drive the sickos wild isnt necessarily a strong arguement...
a chicken and the egg sort of situation....

What part of basic cable is evidence of the u.s. not being prudes? Is it other people having mock sex? Because its like comparing apples and oranges. People watching others get down n dirty isn't quite similar to people getting naked and going out in public to have a good time in an unsexual manner. There's people who've prolly never even been naked with the lights on if someone else is in the room.
This does however make me think of teenagers and twenty-somethings not being against public nudity. I mean if girls are willing to flash it all for a tee shirt and a blip on morons gone wild and wear their thongs on the outside of their pants like gutter-trash then I imagine if given the chance they'd bare it all. But I can't help but feel that its a result of wanting acceptance and attention from boys and men. So yeah... I forget where I was going

I've visited several resorts and except for a couple of times where newbies got weird everything has been allright. I don't go nude in the street though, at home yes, and at resorts yes. The pervs with the cameras are usually reported and escorted out though.

Thanks Ned. It's refreshing to see someone appreciate good comedy. :D And boy, what a joke this administration is. I always say the best comedy is the stuff that's true. Now where's that "We change the reasonfor why we went to war and the rationale for staying on a weekly basis sig?"

I fall into the camp of thinking the USA is not a prude nation; everyone is doing it.
But censoring nudity / sexuality is a good thing. Children will discover it on their own via school, their peers, the babysitter (memories) ...
Why the need to showcase it ? I don't need to see it while watching the news

Word, man. Just word. So much could be said, but I'll spare this thread from it. :)
As for nudity, why censor it? It's not like it's actually disgusting or wierd in any way. I don't even see the logic in making partial nudity rated R. Rated R?!?! For boobs? Oh no, let's put a rated R sticker on mirrors too, god forbid the kids should actually look in them!

Yeah, but demonizing the human body as though it were something to be ashamed of is not a good thing, either. There is a middle ground: comfort with the human form and sexuality, coupled with reponsibility for personal choice and others boundaries.

since when is not exposing children to sex and nudity demonizing the human body?

First, you either didn't read what I wrote, purposefully ignored it or are looking for an argument. You're going to tell me that there isn't a sane middleground to be had. Fine. But you might not want to take what I write out of context, it proves you are either looking to prove a point by pandering and obfuscation or that you're just woefully ignorant of the general usage of the English language. Either way, I'm trying to have an adult conversation, here. *shrug*
Anyway, I do feel, however, that sex is being sold now in everything and that can cheapen it in the eyes of some people and, of course, children, who are taught in our society that sex is something dirty to be kept a secret rather than something that consensual adults engage in and the fact that so much of advertising is sexualized is a serious issue, as it blurs the line between self-improvement & acceptance (these two things being key target areas in advertising) and sexuality.
Terran has the right of the matter with regards to causality.
Secondly, what is wrong with nudity, exactly? Please, someone take this innocent question and come back saying something overblown and asinine like: "Nothing, if you like old bums pressing their privates against the glass at your local McDonalds while you're trying not to gag on your chicken mcnuggets!"

Yes, being prude is a bad thing. Protecting your children from the oh-so-horrible naked body of others when sex and nudity is a natural part of our lives. Censoring nudity is as stupid as censoring smoking: It's part of the world and heck, nudity is only for GOOD, whereas smoking is considerable less admirable then showing off. Maybe we should put an R-rated sticker on every film that shows someone eating unhealthy food. I mean, we're already censoring nudity and sex, some of the most natural urges for humans? Can it get any worse?
And yes, thank christ about the red light districts. Too bad it has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

On that note prostitutes definitely fill a need that society has. People just don't admit it. Just come clean ( no pun intended) People are sexual creatures. All this sexual repression is bad for you and denying it only leads to frustration. The porn industry is a multi-billion dollar a year Juggernaut in the U.S. alone. However, if you polled people you'd be hard pressed to get anybody to admit that they watch porn or that they even masturbate. There are things that are worse than being a prude and being a hypocrite is one of them. Jesus hates those.

That is probably the most sensible thing I have ever read on this board.

I think this is the problem people have with nudity- they only associate it with sex. I believe that nudity doesn't have to = sex at all. So I would say that young children being exposed to sex is bad (of course) but seeing naked people in a safe, non-sexual context (such as going for a naked family swim) is perfectly okay.
I think what I'm trying to say is that there is a difference between nudists and flashers. The former just feel more comfortable nude and the latter are pervs. It's not the same thing.

lol missjackson wtf kind of party was that!?
everyone was just sitting around eating jelly & ice cream in the buff? speaking as a european i can tell you thats pretty unusual!
as almost everyone says, there's a middle ground. france has naked women on billboards, and that place isnt an orgy of rape and paedophilia. areas with less access to hardcore pornography have higher incidences of rape. think on it, sex isnt the enemy
i think its a good idea not to expose kids to hardcore shagging on tv or whatever, because theyre only kids, let them have a break and live in kiddy la la land before telling them about the heavier stuff in life.

Darn tootin', kids should be left to be kids and have a childhood for cripes sake! You only get to do it once and you spend the rest of your life as a complicated adult, so you can only scrape out about 13 years maximum of carefree living these days, even less for some who are so eager to become an adult...which is just retarded...ergo, kids know nothing.
Anyway, indeed, porn is good and it is proven that it helps society. Just think about it, after 7 days sans-spoodge, testosterone is at it's absolute 'best' (or potent ... on average)...if people would just whack off every couple of days everyone would be much more chilled out, haha! :D

That's funny that they're in such a hurry to grow up. Kids have never had it so good as they do today. I mean, they literally have to do nothing. Back in the day they would be breaking their backs in the fields at age 8 harvesting crops just so the family could eat and maybe have a surplus to sell. i guess it's a moot point since technology and Mexicans have erradicated the need for child labor. :rockbrow:

It was just a birthday party! No special occasion... of course eventually I found out the whole neighborhood was a bunch of voyeurs... the home we lived in at the time was in this development called Nellie Gail Ranch and most of the homes were on hills so the higher up the hill you were the more peoples yards you had the possibility of seeing into... add to that the many horse trails going through the area behind peoples homes and depending on where you lived you could see everything someone was up to... apparently this family often swimmed and partied in the nude but eventually they became real Americans when the husband divorced the wife and married the au pair!
back to the prudish thoughts of an American...
I think I can see why some people may want to make their children into prudes and afraid of nudity... perhaps to prevent sexual urges. I mean you have to consider that i've heard schools say they dont want to teach kids about the use of condoms because they think knowing how to use one makes you want to. I imagine that some people may feel that the more often you're naked the more likely you are to have sex. And in a country where kids in 4th grade are going at it in their schools I can understand why it may be necessary not to encourage nakedness.
On the other hand my parents had pictures of me naked as a jaybird running around the sprinklers, lake, beach, pool, etc. and I turned out relatively normal.
I can't say that the actions of our French neighbors were normal I mean every country has people that are EXREME examples of behavior perhaps that was them...
