Do you think he was bringing the television into the basement like Ben thought or was he bringing it down to the main floor like he claimed? He had a point about getting no reception in a basement after all but he was sure being quiet about bringing it downstairs. A guy like him I would expect to grunt and groan so everyone would know he was doing something.
What do you all think?

You're right, that was a good excuse that he gave and it was probably legit. However, the way in which he was going about the house all looking over his shoulder coupled with his actions up to that point led me to believe that he wanted to horde it for himself. Although, One could argue that the reason he was looking over his shoulder so much is that he was just scared. I don't know how he could have hid the fact that he had a tv from the others for long even if it was in the basement. There was a fair amount of traffic going through there. The only other thing he could have done was to hide the tv just to spite everyone and that makes absolutely no sense.

I think he was trying to one up Ben and be the big man who brought the TV down for everyone ...

That a good observation. I hadn't thought of that before. The whole movie was basically a pisiing contest anyway. What would he have accomplished by one upping him besides boosting his own ego though?

That questions applies to all of us in real life, what do we accomplish by one upping others besides boosting our own egos?

Personally, I think his excuse was legit. As Ivarr said, it would probably be a way of doing a good deed and rubbing it in Bens face.

I always thought it looked like he was angling towards the basement. It did seem odd that he had such an airtight excuse ready to fire, but I do think he was heading for the basement. Perhaps it was so his wife would shut up about not having a tv or a radio.

I just replayed the scene and it does look like that's what he's doing. Or it could be just a ploy to misdirect us. I guess we'll never know unless we ask gar or savini themselves.

Thats why I think Cooper is a weenie and nothing more. If it were Rhodes, he would've ordered Steel to shoot somebody and had Rickles run the television into the basement for him. Then when everyone was distracted, Rhodes would've locked himself in the basement with the t.v. and hooked up an atari (TM) to it and played Pong or Q-Bert until the redneck posse arrived!

He wuld be better to get the original NES and play Duck Hunt. Fun game, and would keep his shooting skills sharp. Judging from his ability to hit Bub, he could use some pratice!
P.S. - The Atari 2600 O-Bert sucked total ass!

Agree with posters who say he was trying to one-up Ben. Also, the smirk on his face before he unplugs the set upstairs implied to me that he wanted to show the broadcast to everyone downstairs because the brooadcaster, like Cooper, found the idea that the dead were rising to be totally ludicrous.
