Just found this place yesterday; most of you will be able to figure out what it used to be by looking at a couple of the pictures. It was cool seeing a bowling alley that still had all its pins and balls (first time I've ever seen one in tact like that), a bank, a thrift shop, conference halls with all of the chairs still set up. Lots of fun exploring it. Even ran into security, which you can see drove into one of my pictures as I was taking it and scared the shiv out of us. He was cool, though, just told us not to break anything and we'd be alright.

So its an old military base or something?

That would be an awesome place to film a zombie film, man!

How did you get in though? Is it even gated and locked, especially the interior?

Yes, it's an ex military defense center. It is located in Philly (actually not too far from where I believe the apartments in the beginning of Dawn78 are). Yes, they have it gated with security patrolling and every door/window is locked. I've been "urban exploring" for about 8 years now; I know the "tricks of the trade", how to be sneaky and quiet, etc.

I went back there today and took a shload more pics. Even got up onto the roof of the clock tower. Here you go, glad some of you are enjoying these!

Awesome...AWESOME pics! Thank you so much for sharing, man.

Just do us all and yourself a favor. If, whilst rooting around in the lower levels of the installation, you find a sealed container or odd looking hyper-technological-seeming device do NOT tamper with it! I'd hate to see you become a horror movie cliche.

Cool photos and ultra wicked find brother! Agree with Dawg: that would be an awesome place to shoot a zombie movie.

In Los Angeles, that place would have been covered in grafitti and have homeless crack heads living there. It certainly would have not remained relatively untouched in spite of the security.

Though wasn't the building that GAR used as 107 someplace in downtown Pittsburgh? Could be wrong, since it was supposed to be in Philly.

All the same, still a wicked find and gives me goosebumps when I look at the pictures (which, btw, are very well composed)

Thanks for sharing, brother!

MissJackson... I don't condone breaking and entering... but if you're going to try it make sure you're with, at most, one other person and it's dark. If the theatre is locked up tight at every entrance then you might be shiv outta luck. Sometimes places will seem locked up but there will be a small window a door that's got a hole in it in which you can barely fit your arm through and either unlock the door from the inside or push the lever to open the door from in there.

Aces... I think I made a mistake today...

Cody... I've been caught many times. The only time I was actually fined and had to go to court was when we got way too comfortable with a place and one night ended up drinking tons of PBR and Jack Daniels and got real stoned. When the cops caught us (more like we caught them and they fooled us) we had a joint, a half handle of Jack, and about 15 beers on us so they had to do something. Most other times the security won't even ask anything; they'll just say "Don't break anything and you're cool." and leave us be... or if they do ask what we're doing, I hold up my camera and inform them that I'm a student taking pictures for my photography class.

Jimbo... There were plenty of places around Philly that were heavily patrolled and still covered in graffitt (but they're since demolished). But this place, I think, everyone believes to still be in operation. So there is no vandalism or anything because people don't even think of it as being abandoned. Even one building is still in use, which I presume keeps a lot of people thinking it's still fully functional. In one of my pictures you can see a row of cars parked out front of a building across from the one I was in.

Well, let us know if you notice any oddities, such as a loss of time, feeling like you're seeing things that should just not be, or you are struck with odd physical symptoms, such as a desire for raw human flesh.

Heres a site i found a while ago which is quite interesting, its the exploration of the defence line of Kiev which is mainly world war 2 but some of it dates back to the mongol times
http://www.theserpentswall.com/index.html
Also heres a site with plenty of photos taken around the chernobyl area,i think its by the same person
http://chernobyl.in.ua/en/home

Tell me though mike, why is such a large facility like that sitting empty?and why do they bother patrolling it if its disused?or is it just a mothballed base that would be active again if the draft came into play?

Tricky, just about every single large-scale abandoned place I've been to has had security. No matter how long a place is abandoned for, somebody still owns it. It usually ends up being the state that owns the property so they hire a security team to watch over it for a few main reasons:

-They don't want kids going in there, getting hurt (or killed) then having their parents sue the state for being careless and leaving such a place open to the public.

-They don't want jerkoff's going in there and vandalising the place or starting fires.

-They don't want scrappers going in there and gutting the buildings for all of the copper piping.

-A lot of the time the places are on the market. So if someone comes along and feels like buying it, they can make an offer. Security is there to keep all of the above out and to keep the property value up.

When I visit places I leave them untouched. Sure I'll take cool little things here and there as keepsakes but I will NEVER start a fire, destroy anything, bust open any locked doors, spray paint anything (unless the place is beyond hope, then I might dabble in it), etc.

I know you dont condone breaking and entering... I dont either... I call it investigating... did it in Canada once when I found an abandoned garage like thing... found someone was growing pot... apparently everyone in town knew about it but me ...oop

I came across a neat abandoned house in California once too... where I lived in Corona Del Mar... the house was too expensive to sell and had been empty for years so I went poking around to see what the view looks like from the top of the world... it was awesome...

Ohio has a few abandoned factories that were neato but the cops there are real jerkos...

I'm optimistic about this theater because its got broken windows and stuff so I wouldn't technically have to break in... someones already done the hard work lol...

I dont think many people on this board condone breaking the law. I'll admit ive trespassed sometimes either in the woods / or in abandoned homes.

When I lived in GA out in the country alot of houses were abandoned, when the people died the houses were just left behind with all the stuff in them still and my uncle found 2 tickets to president roosevelts inaugural ball.

Wow thats an awesome find Cody...

When it comes to breaking the law I try not to break any laws where it could violate someone elses safety or without hurting someone... I dont spray paint ...I dont speed when I drive... but if I see something abandoned... I'm just wondering whats inside... *but* I would never like actually break into something... I tend to go and leave unnoticed...

wierd that horror nuts have a passion for urban exploring as well, best vie been through is an abandoned nut'ouse on the outskirts of nottingham, but man, tell me you stole a bowling ball., bitchin' picks man, kinda shocking how wasteful it seems over there, the reason you hardly see any abandoned buildings over here is nearly every square acre is housing, protected woodland, farmland or lakes, we dont just leave stuff, but over there its not uncommon for entire towns, espeically between the 40's adn the 70's to jsut be abandoned and left to be retaken by nature its jsut bizaare from an englishmans point of view.

and i think i posted this before but youll still get a kick out if it guys if your new to this forum.

Hells, I was a frequent visitor of Byberry AKA Philadelphia State Hospital. Where it once stood is now just many acres of flat dirt. It was demolished the past winter. Very sad. Whenever a place I frequent gets torn down it feels like a small piece of me dies.
