It was announced on the radio earlier that gordon brown is looking into putting restrictions & bans on violent games & films, which i hope isnt going to go as far as the german laws, where even counterstrike is banned!

F*CK GORDON BROWN

Whatta wanker...but then nothing's changed really, is this an attempt to regain the "brown bounce"? lol, n00b, all bounces reach a peak and then hurtle towards the tarmac again anyway...or end up stuck in your house's gutter never to be found again.

Restrictions? What, beyond the f*cking MASSIVE ratings slapped all over them, beyond the self-imposed regulation the games industry has, beyond the mandatory-for-distribution rules the BBFC has who have shown themselves to be almost entirely mature and methodical when it comes to ratings since 1999?! Geez!

Just accept the fact, PARENTS should be PAYING SOME F*CKING ATTENTION, if they're not - it's THEIR fault, simple as. The respective industries have done as much as they possibly can.

Otherwise it's all bluster to try and appeal to the "nutters" (as the Melon Farmers would say), or it's another chance for Labour to screw the thumbscrews of nanny state control even tighter.

It's ludicrous really, from the same people who want to restrict overseas gambling ads, but allow national gambling ads. From the same people who pimped out 24 hour drinking, which has actually increased the problem of binge drinking, not decreased it. But then again, they're not new to pimping out ideas on the same subject that flat out contradict one another...

Well, if they get anywhere with this idea, then they can expect a big "f*ck you" from me...but if it goes anywhere but the "long grass" (common ground for Labour policy by now ) then I'd be surprised.

...

Calm down Liam, I've gone the entire afternoon working with a Liberal mindset, so I need to "red bash" a bit to get me leveled out, maaaaaan.....*looks all stoned, goes to watch television* :D

Minion... I know that venting anger can make people feel calmer, but damn!

Gordon Brown is a F*ckwit and as was mentioned, what kind of restrictions could be placed except the already stupid classifications that the BBFC places? I've seen some really f*cking stupid ideas in my time, but this is p*sstaking of the highest caliber. Believe me, if these plans ever go forward... then to quote the Saw films "Oh yes, there will be blood"...

ok, maybe a little overboard there, but you see my mindset right now regarding the f*cking government

The problem is that the parents buy kids these 18 rated games because they know the kids cant get hold of them but have probably nagged them for months to buy them it!or the kid who's parents refuse to buy it just goes round to his mates with more easy going parents and plays it there,it will be extremely difficult to police such a law!i wholeheartedly agree that under 18's shouldnt be playing stuff like manhunt, quake 4,doom 3 or even the foul mouthed company of heroes (sure i played controversial games at that age,but controversial now & controversial then are very different things, mainly down to the technology available now) Doom, night trap & resident evil etc were the headline grabbers back then, but those are extremely tame by todays standards.I just dont know how they will police it short of an outright ban on the sale of whatever games they take a dislike to.As for the 24 hour drinking thing,i hear they are going to backtrack on that as well!which is annoying as ive got used to staying out till 5 in the morning now!im not a binge drinker anyway,i pace myself through the night & am appreciative of the fact ive got a few extra hours to pull on a night out compared to a few years ago

I'm 15, half of my games/DVD collection my parents had to take to the counter for me, or I just bought them online. My parents know that I'm not an idiot and can trust me playing/watching 18 rated stuff.

Shops and companies have done all they can, once it's on the shelves it's up to the parents (who should know whether their kid is the right age to play/watch age restricted games/films) to buy it or not. The only game I can remember my mum never letting me play (when we got our first PC) was Duke Nukem, she'd bought it for me but then after hearing more about it decided I was too young for it, and I was very young at the time so now I agree.

But anyway my point is, Gordon Brown is full of sh**.

It's just ludicrous, banning stuff comes from a complete lack of appreciation for another art form you don't understand, it comes from a place of maniacal control, disrespect for freedom-of-speech and it just shows a complete non-understanding of other people's cultures. Plus, as you said Tricky - completely impossible to police it, same as many other wackjob ideas they put forth, completely unworkable.

Like the thing regarding "violent" pornography, what a laugh riot that proposed legislation is! Basically, they'd seek to ban consensual porn and bang up - FOR THREE YEARS - anyone caught with it.

Surely that's the stuff of a facist dictator?! Like it or not, some people dig that stuff and it's a legitimate fetish and blah blah blah, and while I too would rather turn my eyes away (aside from laughing at Ashley Hames get a beating on "Sin Cities" on Bravo, haha), it's not for me to decide whether it's tasteful or not - who gives a crap as long as it's consensual?! Even stuff made to appear to be non-consensual is blatantly consensual.

...

Besides, if they think porn viewing habits in the UK are "messed up", they wanna go to Japan, those guys are nuts.:barf:

Anyway...yaboo-sucks to Darth Brown, wanker.

They said it best on mock the week about this, "whens the last time they played grand theft auto or listened to slipknot, how would they know it makes you violent?, they probably listen to enya"

When did they say that on Mock the Week? Was that last week? Hmmm...must have missed that bit, or just forgot...hmmm.

MtW rocks by the way, 30 minutes of full on laughter - bonus round!:cool:

Oh, and this news is now up on the Melon Farmers:

Another one of these "I don't believe in censorship BUT..." twats.

Also, here's the Daily Mirror's response to Darth Brown's pandering-to-idiots (from Game Politics):

The reasons young people commit violent crimes are many and complex. Bad parenting, social deprivation, poor education, cheap alcohol sold to underage kids, flawed policing and the knives and guns on our streets all play a part.

Yet there’s no hard evidence that watching “video nasties” or playing distasteful computer games causes kids to go out and wound or kill.

Gordon Brown’s decision to look again at films and games smacks of yet another gimmick, serving to win Mr Brown cheap headlines, not save lives.

And that, Sirs, is certainly the case.
