I was just wondering what everyone thought the world would be like in 2040?

Technology wise, everything will be even bloody smaller, lighter, seriously fast - we'll most definately be as technologically-bound in the Western world as those guys over in Japan are (all that buying sodas with your mobile, watching TV on your mobile, smart toilets etc).

Society won't be intensely different, there won't be flying cars and suchlike, but hmmm...the internet will be insanely fast, we'll be watching TV and movies via our computers on wafer-thin monitors which can be rolled out of a thin box (saw it on a gadget show, its in the testing stages).

Population wise? Unless we have an epidemic before then, there'll still be too many of us, there will definately have been another war - perhaps a 'big' one (WW2 size...not length).

I'll be 56 ... *ponders* ... damn...that kinda sucks, lol. Hopefully I'll be a millionnaire by then though, with a sweet car and such.

Not sure what else will change, everything probably. Who knows, we could be progressing towards a hotel on the moon for millionnaires by then.

look at every technological leap in history...the creation of a mass medium was behind it. printing press, internet, etc....

i can see the above predictions coming true, society probably won't change much, but the new mass medium will definitely be Virtual Reality.

Video games, entertainment, training for jobs or military will be big businesses. However, nobody will capitolize on VR more than PORN. All of this according to my mass. comm. teacher.

The mass infantry war-period is over. Sure, there will be wars from now on, but not on the scale of the WW's. Long distance weaponry and special tactics forces will limit casualties. The next big conflict will be in Asia. N. Korea is threatening everyone with their nuclear capabilities, China is finally becoming modern and its economy is booming. Japan is comign around to remilitarizing in response to China's growth and N. Korea's weaponry. Unfortunately, the rest of Asia sees Japan as a major threat and still regards them as evil (their brutal control over Asia during the 30's and 40's has not been forgotten).

I predict two different scenarios:


Scenario 1

2040

Many new countries will have formed. It is not highly unlikely that the US will have split in two parts that while officially being one coutry, are really two different independent countries. One fiercly religious and conservative and the other democratic and modern. Israel will have conquered more lands from it's incapable neighbours and along with China will have the biggest army in the world.

Coorperations won't be plenty. There will be but a few, massive ones. There will be one food coorperation, one water coorperation, one energy coorperation, one soda coorperation etc. etc. etc. Currently, all major coorperations are buying up the minor companies so this is something that WILL happen. I don't believe coorperations will sport their own political agendas and territory, like in Rollerball, but that might come at a later date. Eventually, coorperations will become more powerful than countries.

China will be the superpower of the day, with most of the worlds coorperations having relocated their production to East Asia and sorrounding countries. In the western world, there will be tremendous unemployment, possibly ranging up to 30-40%.

Genetic engineered food will completly depend on what the Food Coorporation chooses to do, but I'd say that about 90% of our food will be genetically altered and there being select wares that are not (for those who don't want it).

Another space race has occured, and we have possibly colonized the Moon and put a man on Mars. The sole reason for this would be that the western world would want something to divert the publics attention from all growing problems in the society and the chinese, having the resources and not wanting to miss out, will have picked up on this and the two halves will compete with each other. Russia will offer technology to both, but stay out of it (or join on Chinas sida). Due to their lucrative trade agreements with China, Russia will possibly again emerge as a superpower, and China will have of course replaced the US' position.

In everyday life, it will remain much the same. There will not be awhole lot of new inventions in the coming century. A few here and there, but nothing to rock the world. People will be more healthy, because cars have become more expensive but will also run on ecological gases and fuel. So, people will bicycle more and so. Airplane travel has suffered a slight decline (or may even have ceased completly) because of the lack of fuel, but as a result boats and ships have become the preferred way to travel and alot of money has gone into making boating a pleasant and fast experience. Crossing the atlantic could take a day or two. But apart from some major changes, life remains much the same. Skyscrapers will look more polished, but cities will still be as dirty. Unemployment will be massive, however, as I mentioned.

The movie business will remain much the same, with the exception being that every single movie is produced by the same coorperation and it's daughter companies. It will be easier for actresses to break into the movie business, because now there are one only set of executives they have to blow.

2060-2070

China, the new center of the world, will not be without it's problems. It will be a country where men outnumber the women 5 to 1, due to the fact that modern chinese often abort or "dispose" of their girl childs (chinese parents are only allowed one child, and they want those to be boys). So by 2060 or 2070 China will recieve a complete and utter economic collapse sending much of the world into a huge deppression. India will then replace Chinas place as a superpower and unlike all other superpowers, India will be a benign superpower with little interest in military matters. The golden age of the modern era will begin by then. Wars will not be as frequent and the far east will still be economically viable and powerfull whereas the west will recieve a slight economic boost.

The earth is a wasteland. The US, East Asia, Europe are all laid to waste by nuclear weapons and chemical agents. Africa, Australia and South America will have experienced a tough nuclear winter. Those who survive the nuclear winter will suffer a lack of food, medicine and will dwindle in numbers very quickly. The earth's population has been reduced to 50 million, spread across over the southern part of the world at various locations.

The Feudal system will have returned, with powerful political figures having deployed themselves as the saviours of mankind. They will control small states, and these will be the equivalent of todays countries. Warfare will be constant, and the population will be kept at a low until the distant future when the earth once again can sustain life and technology may (or may not) save mankind from this grim vision.

Battles will be fought with a combination of swords, clubs, axes and simple musketlike rifles. Modern guns will have been done away with, because of the complexity of constructing ammo for them. That is why renaissance like warfare, with battlelines and routing will be present on the earth once again.

3000+

In the very distant future, way beyond 2040, the time prior to the Nuclear War will be known as the Time of the White Man, but since nearly all white men were wiped out in the nuclear war, the world will be dominated by someone else, possibly latinos or africans. All persons, events and happenings in The Time of the White Man will be considered to be a myth, legend. From Alexander the Great to Adolf Hitler, they will at first form a sort of mythic legend but eventually people will start to doubt that these persons ever even existed and that the Time of the White Man was simply one big story. Much in the same way we view the Bible and Quran today.

Thats scary but anythings posible.. its never to late to change the future is never set in stone we can try to change what may and could happen..nucular holocosts and such things like that.

but by 3000 maybe other galaxys will develop space travel to enter other galaxys like ours and it could be similer to futurama you never know.. lol

the beginning of a permanent human presence on the moon. if humans have not attempted to visit mars by 2040, i think that such an attempt will at least be in the advanced planning stages. missions to europa to determine the nature of the ocean that exists beneath the ice.

i think that the lifespans of persons born in western countries & japan in 2040 will be at least 100 years.

i think that alternative energy resources (stuff like wind, solar,will be utilized on a far greater scale than today. in addition, i think that cars will be available that are powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Hmmm well i have to say that that london ios full of illeagals, and crims but then i am born and raised london asian, and to be honest i love my london and believe that immigration laws should be tightend up to stop crims getting in, also hate the abuse of immigrants over here (most of this abuse isnt done by the brits but the people from the countries that they originate from). Same can be said about the mongolian armies of Ghengis Khan not all of them were mongoloian in fact many were japenese and chinese. also the largest (to this day) fleet of war ships were Japenese back in the 14th century mmmm...

And of course the thing with immigration is also quite simple - we simply don't have the space, nor the resources to deal with them. It's a simple fact that must be accepted, we can hardly afford to help anymore immigrants as we're so swamped with people on this island as it is (the official 60 millionth person in Britain was born this week - "official" of course, which means there's gotta be about 62 million in the UK by now, on this pokey little island?!).

It's like that South Park episode "goo backs from the future", it made a good point, you must limit it and you can't help everyone, because you'll end up making the host country worse off than it was.

And what's with all this politically correct need to be completely "multicultural"?! What's wrong with the French being in France, the Germans being in Germany, the Romanians being in Romania and so on. As long as you aren't racist about it then that's fine. You can have multiculturalism, but that means you're losing individual identities. It's a damn shame already that you can't wave the English or even British flag for fear of being labelled a racist pig, I mean wtf is that all about?!

That's the problem with Britain, a bunch of sated "let someone else do it" types that are too distracted by TV to notice the, not even clever, spin the gubment is putting out there to cover up their complete incompetence. A bunch of people so afraid of speaking up for themselves for the fear of being chastised. You'd never see America giving up its patriotism (watched Armageddon last night, damn that movie is drowning in patriotism).

Of course, we're not totally devoid of such emotion, the Queen's recent 50th year on the big red seat proved that in spades, and then you've got bloody Darth Brown telling us we should be more patriotic ... erm, excuse me, it's HIS bloody gubment that has continued to force us not to love our country or support it or even care for it. Shocking.

There were no japanese in the mongolian hordes, but I get your point. I think you're referring to korean, though. During the mongol invasion of japan, the koreans were employed to a great success using a phalanx like formation. But since they were heavily outnumbered they had to retreat.

Then the mongols arrived again with the largest fleet ever! (It was mongol, not japanese) Surely this meant the end for the japanese shogunate! But wouldn't you know it, the kamikaze storm came along and wiped the entire fleet out. Talk about bad luck...

See below note about purity of races, there is no such thing as a pure race, and personnally i believe royalty is a god awful waste of the tax payers money. I agree with the fact that we are soon going to have a problem with the work force, well actully we already are. I also believe that we shouldnt have to support everyone as this will tax our own resources. And why shouldnt the flag be waved with pride, after all I consider myself British, I use the health system pay my taxes, work daily and beyond and am proud of my heritage as a british born Asian. The Uk gave me oppertunities that I amy have not gotten in other countries down to personal cicumstance that would not have allowed to me in my 'home' country. I come from a family that immigrated from Africa in the 70's and all of my family used the education system and became good tax paying members of society, I dont see the problem with allowing that into the country. What I do believe is wrong that

1. People trafficking, this turns honest hardworking people into abused and damaging members of society.

2. People not having proper background checks when allowed into the country these are potential killers rapists, murderers, etc...

I also think that racism is a label that is to quickly attached to people rather then a understanding view of what they are trying to say, often puts people that would not be racist but feel the points they are trying to put across as being ignored and thus vote for the misguided and potentially damaging BNP. But hey this is all personal opionion.

No, you're thinking about the Mongol fleet. The Japanese never really had any ambition to leave their island whatsoever. They were more or less isolated from the rest of the world in most ways. Maybe you're thinking about the failed Japanese invasion of Korea, where the japanese fleet was utterly crushed by the Korean fleet (The Koreans had like 13 ships against the japanese 135 and still the koreans won big time).

But the Japanese never really amassed a fleet of 4 thousand ships.

There's Admiral Yi. He was the commander of the Korean fleet during the Japanese invasion of Korea. I find no mention anywhere about a japanese fleet of 4,000 ships. That's probably the mongol fleet your thinking off. The japanese did have 1,000 ships in the invasion of Korea (altough this might be a very inflatuated number) but since the koreans had Admiral Yi on their side, the japanese didn't stand a chance. He fought over 20 battles against them and didn't loose a single one.
