Jeez...and this on the heels of that shooting in that small town over the weekend.

Officials said two teachers and two students were shot, and that a 14-year-old girl fell and hurt her knee while running out of the school.

What good are metal detectors if they are intermittently used? The fact that the school is not on their game with these and subsequently a child got firearms onto the campus because of their intermittent use can be considered negligence and will certainly result in lawsuits.

If I intermittently use condoms when I have sex, can I really be surprised when I impregnate my wife?

I think that there are several possible funny responses here, but I will refrain....

the kids in that cleveland shooting had it coming. predominantly black school.....sounds like a school i had to play sports against in high school. "scott high school" if u didnt fit in or werent their color, they'd make fun of you and their noses were 15 feet in the air at all times. im black and im saying this,so theres a huge truth to my above statement. im just waiting for it to happen here because the conditions exist.......and they should.........2 hours from cleveland

I do not lay blame on the doorstep of the school.

If these people's parents did more than send their kid off every morning, and sit them in front of a tv every night, there wouldn't be these kinds of problems.

A little skill called "parenting" would prevent about 99% of these kinds of problems. It isn't the school's job to make sure your kid isn't taking a gun to school; it's your job to make sure your kid isn't taking a gun to school.

If the victims' parents want to "punish" someone by suing, they need to start with the people who truly are responsible.

I totally agree with you that it is not the school's fault. Inevitably the parents are accountable, and certainly if parents were paying attention to their kids then these situations would likely not occur as often.

But again, why intermittent use of metal detectors? The fact that they use metal detectors at all indicates that they are aware of the potential of kids bringing weapons onto the campus and that they are worried about it and have implemented a system to stop this from happening. So what good does the metal detectors do the school if they aren't always used. And it is exactly that sort of chink in the armor that both gangsters and lawyers will exploit when the time comes.

That's true, not using the security devices at all times does make it totally worthless.

What pisses me off about it, though, is that the reason these things aren't in "always used" status is likely just to appease - you guessed it - "concerned parents".

"Oh, you're violating our children's 'rights' by making them go through metal detectors every morning....you're violating our children's 'rights' by doing locker searches...you're violating..." you get the idea.

How many times have we heard these people bleat like lambs that security is "too tight" everywhere...that it gets in the way of convenience? Too many, if you ask me.

I'd be willing to put money on it, that this is the reason the security there was so deficient.

Give them what they want...people get killed. Don't give them what they want...they try to shut you down.

Schools end up like that poor famer and his kid, carrying a donkey on a stick over a bridge. They can't win.

You got that right! People are pretty intolerant when they are inconvenienced.

I went to the airport not long ago, and folks waiting in the security screening lines --which were rather long -- were moaning and bitching about the wait and about having to remove their shoes. I thought to myself that while it was inconvenient, and a little annoying, it was worth putting up with. I would rather be inconvenienced than be blown up by terrorists on a hijacked plane.

I call BS. How can there be a shooting in a gun-free zone? In fact I call BS on all school shootings, as NO ONE would bring a gun into a gun-free zone. Everyone respects those things, don't they?

That school shooting was bunk. The only person the shooter killed was himeself. How in the hell do you just wound four people? If you're going to go on a mass murderous killing spree, make sure you ACTUALLY kill somebody other than yourself, or else you're going to look like a pussy; Evidently the reason why he was bullied in the first place. What a waste. I'm telling you. Kids today are soft. They don't even know how to murder effectively.

That was so wrong, yet so right at the same time...and entertaining to read to boot.

What's up with parents these days? If they would just tell the kids to use their fists and beat the sh*t out of the people picking on them, everything would be fine.

I dont understand whats going on with kids these days!surely even in america a 14 year old shouldnt have a gun by law?and perhaps parents should be made by law to have a locked gun cabinet for their firearms,so little johnny cant get his hands on them after he gets the p1ss taken for looking like "the crow" in school...

hey bassman, isn't there a 311 song called "guns are for pussies" or something like that? figured you'd have made a reference to that in your post...

yeah, kids these days are totally pathetic. the "me" generation, as its called, will be responsible for the end of society as we know it. what a bunch of spoiled, no-balls, disrespectful, self-centered a$$-clowns.

and yeah....not to sound too insensitive, but this has got to be the most pathetic school shooting ever. casualties including a girl who fell and hurt her knee? charles whitman must be rolling in his grave.

Yesah, they do. And I couldn't agree more. To quote "Friday" about just fighting with fists...."You win some, you lose some. But you live, you live to fight another day."

I don't really agree with fighting, either....but I would much rather that be the case than some f*ck with a gun...

311. Isn't that a code for "KKK" You know, three "11"s, K being the 11th word in the alphabet?

But I digress. Previous poster pointed out that kids shouldn't have guns, and this is very true. But in the Columbine shooting, those kids got the guns not from the parents but through an illegal sale. And the idiot gangbangers in Los Angeles, most of them being underage, are not getting their guns from parents but via illegal street sales. Guns are so prevalent in the United States that they are very easy to come by on the black market. Of course, being that it is a subterranian transaction, it is even cheaper to purchase an illegal, underground weapon than it is to get one through legal means.

No, no, no. I get this all the time but it's not true. It's just a weird coincidence. The best answer to that statement(and the band tells people the same thing) is "It's all printed down on the lyric sheets....go read em". They're the farthest thing from racist.

311 is actually the code for indecent exposure in their hometown of Omaha Nebraska. Their guitarist and bassist got busted for skinny dipping, they thought it was funny, so they kept the code as their name.

Glad to hear this since the KKK and the rest of the White Power followers as are all racist cliques, without a doubt, very very uncool.

Yeah, the white power idiots around Los Angeles tag "311" all the time and in the days of beepers back in the 80s used to send out "311" as their identifying page.

just a quick sidenote: (off topic)

i got lucky and ended up being in memphis tn a couple of years ago on march 11th (3/11) and they were jaming at some bar on beale street...couldn't even get into the door, as it was packed to the max, but we could still see/hear them from the street.

it was kinda funny, cuz i kept seeing all kinds of 311 shirts and i was like "wtf is up with all these 311 fans?" it wasn't till i was wasted that night that i realized the significance of the date...then they were right there rippin it up down the street.

anywho...

they'v only played 311 day in Tennessee once and that was this year. And it was in a venue, not a bar. You must have been hearing a cover band or something.

Anyway....school shootings suck.:|

i don't know man...it was 311 day and literally every other person i saw was wearing a 311 shirt, and they were going nuts outside of some joint on beale street....and everyone was saying it was them inside, they were gonna play later at some big place, but they were doing some kind of show on beale street....the place was going nuts, dude...i've never seen that kinda reaction for a cover band. this was in 2006.

i could be wrong, maybe you're right, but i'm pretty convinced it was them. i looked around and saw a thing or two on people myspace pages sayin stuff about 311 day in memphis 2006. so i'm not trying to start a big debate here, but i really think that i'm right. check this out:

http://www.311.com/html/311day-2006.html

maybe it was just a wild fan party with a convincing coverband, i don't know

just found this too:

I have never heard of 311 as white supremecy
when i was a guest of the state
the brotherhood taught me things to identify them and to know when it was them giving me a message
you would get a note and it would be signed

"14 words"
"88" or "44 twice"
"30 pieces"

"14 words" -which is a standard signature for members of the AB (aryan brotherhood). the words are: " we must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children"
writen by David Lane, former member of the Order

"88"- which stands for heil hitler as H is the 8th letter in the alphabet
or they put "44 twice" meaning the same thing

"30 pieces"- not about judas, but what they paid him to betray jesus

these on a signature were the authenticator that a member of the brotherhood was really contacting you, not some wanna be.
the letter was always in code, which i should even tell you but
seing most of you wont ever deal with the brotherhood ...
the code works like this: if you see an exclamtion point, you throw out every word before the last question mark.To decode, you take the first letter of the first word, second letter of the second word and so on making one word per line, starting with each line with the first letter of the first word.
you do that you get the real message the letter was sent to you for.

but I dont know why 311 is a AB term. I never heard any of the brotherhood use it.
can you tell me?

Fascinating, brother! Secret codes!

When I was doing my course work in Criminal Justice (much less interesting than it sounds) there was a Juvenile Delinquency class where they had a gang "specialist" who had mentioned "311" as being shorthand for "KKK" being used by White Power skinheads. Apparently this shows up in tags, tattoos and some clothing accessories. (She did talk about "88" as well, but I did not hear about the other terms, though they may have been mentioned, this was some time ago) There was also mention of an elaborate FBI sting where an agent was posing as a White Power organizer and befriended a local upper middle class crew of skinheads. Apparently they would also page "311" to signify that they were going to get together.

So I don't know about this from personal experience, and I can tell you that my face to face experience with White Power folks is limited (though one neo-nazi punk kid in high school told me that of all the non-white races that the Japanese were the only ones acceptable because they were "as close to white as a non white could be"-- go figure!)
