Nintendo told The Wall Street Journal that they plan on rolling out new, non-gaming functions on the Nintendo DS.

President Satoru Iwata said the features will be useful in "places like train stations, amusement parks or museums" and could be accessed wirelessly.

Although specifics were short, the features will roll out in 2008. We're guessing site-specific wi-fi content: IE, a virtual tour guide for your local art museum, or instantly available train schedules at the station. As for amusement parks: We're guessing digital corn dogs are on the way.

For a sneak peak at what the new features might be, travel to Safeco Field, the home of the Seattle Mariners, where the Nintendo Fan Network was quietly rolled out this season. Fans who brought their DS to the stadium were able to "order food and drinks, watch the live television feed of the game, access stats and scores, and play trivia from the comfort of their seat."

This is awesome. They just keep adding cool features. They've already snagged me and hells though, but i'll take the new features anyway. They had me at hello.

That is very cool. I take my DS a lot of places with me, so hopefully they will install something like that in Comerica Park (aka Tiger Stadium) so that I can be lazy and order my stuff from my seat when I go see the Tigers play.

If they do the downside of increased ticket prices looms ominously. :(

Nah, they wouldn't punish every fan just because a very small percentage would be using their Nintendo network. At SafeCo they just charge people $5 if they want the signal sent to their DS.
