just when you thought it was safe
to roam the streets at night
you find yourself surrounded
by a twisted hellish plight

they're slow, they shamble
it seems easy to run away
but just around the corner
there's another, skin cracked and grey

two weeks ago
when your lovely sister died
and chased you through the house
it seemed so silly to hide

after all she was small,
only ten last september
was that your father's eyeball in her mouth?
if only you could remember

if only you had more time
to find your daddy's gun
you wouldn't feel so helpless
you could fight back instead of run

so out the door! into the street!
move quick and find some help!
think not of little Jenny
and Papa's gurgled yelp

your neighboors, once alive
crippled on the streets
each one drowning in a pool
of intestines and pureed beets

each one slowly rising
looking famished, wanting you
each one living dead
wanting human stew

you dodge a few
knock down the rest
you can think, you can scream
you can feel a heart within your chest

you can feel your lungs
refill and contract
you wish you had said no to smoke
and they might be intact

the acid in your muscles
will eventually grind them to a halt
the treadmill was downstairs
laziness was your fault

and now you're unprepared
to face this wicked curse
every breath you huff in fear
multiplies your thirst

the supermarkets open
but obviously you're too scared
no food or water for you today
not one second to be spared

where's the cops, the swat,
the helping hands you need?
where's the tranquil summer breeze,
or a moment to drink and feed?

focus on the most important
aspect of this day
your Gods, they have abandoned you
and turned you into prey:dead:

This should be submitted to the fiction section.

I don't enjoy poems as a general rule of thumb, but I enjoyed this one.

Once upon a time
We bustled on our way
Sleeping at the switch
It was that kind of day

There there came the rising
Which no pundit had foreseen
The population panicked
Real facts remained unseen

Pulpits preached of Judgment
Science hemmed and hawwed
Some said "It's a virus!"
Others blamed the will of God

That's all beside the point
The dead are on their way
We fat, we soft, we lazy
Now it's time to pay

One herd against another
Cattle led down the chute
They find joy in viscera
We scream, we run, we shoot

The breathing seek safe haven
The shambling content to wait
In seconds flat our nature will
Ourselves obliterate

First will come the discord
Chests are thumped and pounded
No attention paid the fact
That our trail is hounded

All the time they're out there
Barbarians at the gate
Focused on but one thing
A hunger they long to sate

Our sanctuary's crumbled
Its their time at last
The living blew their chances
And now their time is past

Sorry couldn't resist. It's complete doggerel and doesn't even hold to a consistent meter, but maybe someone will get a laugh out of it.

No we don't want to hurt you, we want to show you the light and make you one of us, come on in the water is fine.

I really hope it wont be one heard against another, I like the herds banding together to speak to the ranchers, with the love we were taught by Jesus Christ.

He's like a virus!!!! ^

I have said it on another post, but something about all of it is sucking the fun out of HPOTD.

Thanks Major,
I thought the 1st one was better, had better commentary laced in it for one thing...made it more GARish (no pun intended). But glad someone enjoyed my little off-the-cuff piece.

Redge, never spoken to you before and since I'm just about as new here and your words to me were meant well, if a bit creepy, I'm going to tell you something my Mom told me growing up thats never failed me in life, getting into a woman's bed or getting out of getting my ass kicked.

"Its never what you say, but how you say it that count"

This is NOT meant to condescend in any way, I'll be saddened if its taken as such. But when you truly understand that saying of my mother's no one here will have any beef at all with you anymore.
