I would agree with that.

Wow, the 70s were good for something, after all!

70's baby. Can't beat it for its rawness but the 30s/40's has it's merits.
50s were too atomic.
80s too yuppie.
90s... whatever.
00s, too Bush/PC game.

There was horror movies in the 90's?

LOL

I used to love the Full Moon Entertainment stuff even though it was pretty bad.

But i have to say that mid 70's until the late 80's was the best time for horror.

The 80s, baby! Totally.

Day of the Dead, Monster Squad, Night of the Creeps, Return to Salem's Lot, The Return of the Living Dead, Video Dead, The Stuff, Rush Week, Happy Hell Night, An American Werewolf in London, Vamp, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, etc..

The 70s was good too. Salem's Lot, Dawn of the Dead, Phantasm, Dracula '72 a.d., The Satanic Rites of Dracula, Dracula & the Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires, Black Christmas, Halloween, House of 7 Corpses, etc..

Of course, the 60s were awesome too. You can't forget about the godfather of gore, H.G. Lewis.

2,000 Maniacs, Blood Feast, Color Me Blood Red, Rosemary's Baby, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Night of the Living Dead, The Scars of Dracula, etc..

EDIT: The 90s weren't so bad. You had Tremors, Scream, From Dusk Til Dawn, etc..

What I don't like is this 2000s new horror, Japanese knock-off **** floating around today.

I think the 70s because the writer /director got
a chance to make movies

only some examples:

john carpenter-halloween

tobe hooper-texas chainsaw massacre

don coscarelli- phantasm

george romero- dawn of the dead

david cronenberg- rabid

wes craven- last house on the left

sean cunningham- friday the 13th

Oh, and I forgot horror effects came serious with Tom Savini, Dick Smith,
Rick Baker, Rob Bottin.

Plus films like Alien, the Exorcist, Jaws

there were small independent movie companies then
who let these people make films
now? yeah right.
Try to get a studio to give you money as a nobody to
make a horror film.

The seventies are definitely the best years horrorwise but I got a soft spot for the video nasty era of the early eighties. The Evil Dead, Cannibal Apocalypse, etc.

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama

Wow. I totally forgot that movie even existed till just now.

Lionsgate gives anybody money to make movies, have you seen the garbage they have been releasing lately?

Unfortunatly they don't give the money to people who make good horror movies.

30s/40s- I'm a sucker for the classic monsters, especially Wolfman and Frankenstein's Monster

50s- I think the only thing I like is the Creature from the Black Lagoon Trilogy Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the Tingler.....

60s- Night of the living Dead, Psycho, yeah that's all....sadly this is the era I know very little about...:|

80s- Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, Evil Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, Evil Dead 2, Aliens, Creepshow, The Shining To bad this era had a bunch of crappy sequels

90s- Pretty much where horror started to go Down-hill.....I guess BrainDead , and Scream 1 were great.

I think you forgot War & The Band too. The Last Waltz was the best concert event of the 70s, in my opinion.

The Band, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison all performing on the same stage.. C'mon, it's a no brainer!

I'm gonna have to toss my hat in for the 70's as well, very closely followed by the 80's.

I should amend my original post as 80s horror had its good points but that pastel colored crap really left a bad taste behind.

That's got the makings of another thread down memory lane. May as well toss in my 2 centavos: Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Boston. Movies too: John Williams (at his peak), Jerry Goldsmith.

the 70's i feel had the best horror movies but on the other hand the early 80's had some really good films as well

I don't think it's fair to try and group it into decades. Even in the decade with the most well made films, there are twice as many bad ones....

This is a subject that has been on my mind quite a bit lately. I would say definatly 70's-early to mid 80's. the question that REALLY has been plaguing me is, what are the most memorable horror movies of the last 10-20 years? Other than a few notable exceptions, I mostly come up blank, whereas you can reel off a list a mile long for the 70's-80's. Why? Nostalgia? Lack of ideas? Commercialism in film making, business before art? It just seems like a shame....:(

I'm drawing a blank too. Maybe Silence Of The Lambs, Saw, 28 Days Later, Bubba Ho-Tep... I'm hard pressed to think of any more really.
