Depends where she's from. If she's a Londoner, you can't go wrong by calling her 'treacle' or 'Doris'. I.E: "Allo Doris! Show us yer thrupennies, there's a good girl." :D

Don't Use Cockney Rhyming Slang.

No one has used it for 30 years.

Just be yourself, that'll impress her the most.

I like English people but I don't like their slang. In fact, it sounds kind of lame. But i'm sure some of our stuff sounds stupid to them too.

Anyways, congrats on the English broad. I'm sure her parents are proud.

lol, well I would have to agree.

Say to an American 'British' and you get the impression it's always straight to "London, the Queen, apples & pairs, cockneys" etc...London may be the capital, but it's certainly not representative of the nation...much like Washington DC, LA and NY aren't representative of all of the USA.

I duno, the cockney thing from Americans to mean just "British" might be a bit naff, a bit offensive or ignorant...

What I do quite like though, is when Americans try to put on a British accent that they're heard from someone.

Two examples, although they're celebs, is Kevin Smith (like on Evening With 2..."would you like a portion" :D) and Rob Zombie on the DVD for Halloween 2007 where he mimics McDowell's gag reel quote of "he's a right nutter".

I think it's partly down to the pronunication of "T's" as a "T", instead of a "D".

Is anyone suggesting that it is? Surely it's all down to some form of bitterness from people who resent Londoners, no?

Indeed, to hear an American say "bollocks" is rather strange.

That said though, I speak to quite a few on MSN and I've noticed one or two are now saying stuff like 'that's proper' and 'quid's in'.

What I meant was, I get the impression that many Americans consider London representative of the entire British Isles, which is retarded as if I said that New York was representative of the entirety of the USA.

It's not really a beef with Londoners, just London itself. I've never gotten on with that city, every time I've been there I haven't liked it. Although some Londoners who think they're better than everyone else because they're from London, are c*nts. :D

I remember the last time I was in London, just a few months ago, the sheer number of people with ridiculously sharp trimmed facial hair swanning about in Mercedes and BMW's on their 'BlueTeeth' (to quote James May :)) was just laughable...they looked like complete nob'eds.

Now Edinburgh - there's a city. :cool::)

lol, heck yes, American's saying "bollocks" is great. Also Chris Rock was on 'Wonafon Woss' (:p) t'other day and at one point he said something like "I'll give you sound Pounds" (as in our currency), which is funny because we never say that. "Give you some money" sure, but not naming our currency...although it does tickle my ribs a bit when Americans speak about "pounds" and "quids". :) Just coming from that place of, shall we say, someone foreign who happens to speak the same basic language, talking like we do over here...or something like that.

Americans don't use the word bollocks, I don't think. I have been around a few people (old sailor, fisherman sorts) in the New England area that use terms like rubbish and aye though.

Canadians, on the other hand, are the biggest bunch of Anglo-posers on the planet. I'm personally getting to the point where I can't stand the mother****ers. Not because of the geopolitical situation or anything like that. It's just that they strike me as being phonies. Just ****in' phony.

I have said bollocks quite a few times and I am an American. Also, all the Canadian people I have met (and being from Detroit which borders Canada, I have met quite a few) have all been friendly and not posers. In fact, just crossing the Detroit River into Canada, there is a huge change in the peoples attitude, suddenly your in Windsor and everybody seems to be very plesant.

So call them what you will, but the Canadians I have had contact with are good people.

British-ness? YEAH right. They're about as British as I am. More like a country of phony baloneys struggling to find a national identity for themselves other than the "we're the other white people in North America" thing.

Canada has tried so hard to be the voice of reason and the all around good guy of the world for so long, now they're a lost people. Listening to others and having respect for others is a good thing, but sooner or later a nation needs to find its own voice. Basically what i'm laying down is, Canada strikes me as a country of followers and posers. I don't think Canada, the country, or Canadians, the people will ever be able to lead the world in anything, let alone do something on their own without being ordered to by the Europeans.

SoCal, Is there anything doesn't piss you off?

London is the center of England as far as most Americans are concerned. We have a HUGE stupid population here, so you are lucky they even know that one city, and what country it's in. Ask them to point out your country on a map and you're sh*t out of luck.

Oh, and I like Canuks, very nice people on the whole.

Canadians as the 'other white people in North America' eh?

Us Brits are the 'other' people in Europe, we always get lumped in with that lot...neither in nor out of the damn thing.

be careful that this thread isn't descending into racism.

We're banding about a lot of stereotypes here.

I grew up in East London - if anyone's seen Eastenders here then you'll know that walthamstow, where I was born, is completely modelled by that show.

One thing that London has more than any other place is a brilliantly diverse range of cultures - I don't actually live in the capital or Greater London anymore, I moved to Surrey last december because I crave the suburbs...but getting in to London is easy as pie and I'm glad that I still can. Nowhere else on the planet can you see big dirty Rastas hanging out with metal heads on busy street corners like you can in Brixton. Sure its got bad areas and not so bad areas, very few "good" areas as is defined by most people, but one thing is for sure, London is ALIVE with different people, different attitudes and religions. walthamstow is a massive example of a town that has a huge ASian population, all rubbing shoulders with afro-caribbean people, white people, chinese people...you name it...I moved to Hounslow, west London as part of my job and even there you see a huge amount of different people - London can never be defined as "white" or "black" or anything because from one street to the next you see a lot of different people. Of course with this comes a sense of divide sometimes, especially amongst the uneducated around us - but the chances of being attacked in a London town are far less than that of the suburbs and other "countryfied" areas. There's little time for bigotry because so many people have much bigger fish to fry.

Still I dont' believe in London elitism - I don't think you'll find too many people that'll claim London to be the best place in the world because half of them are either just arriving or the other half are desperately looking for a change, but one thing's for sure - its vibrant, has a LOT of action - some not good - but the energy you get from this place is superb and equals other great cities in the UK like Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Cardiff etc. For me, anywhere where there's an amazing mix of different people is a great thing, integration is a great thing - its just a shame some people are still territorial about this place.

unfortunately its posts like this that I'm talking about...unless of course you're some amazing socialite who's managed to meet and analyse all the canadian people in that country. I've met and spoken to an equal mix of idiotic and amazing canadians who are very intelligent....so to malign an entire nation really isn't the right thing to do. To be balanced in this world is a gift you know.

I can also say, I've spoken to some of the dumbest people I've ever met and 99% of them have been from America....but I tell you, out of all the people I've ever spoken to, its easily an equal split between morons and bigots, and just generally really nice folk who have the time of day for people!

On the subject of another post about point out countries on a map, here's one conversation I had with an American once...this is hilarious:

Him: hey you're from Europe?
me: well, kinda yeah...I live in london
Him: have you been to the Eifel tower?
me: no I've never been to france
him: is that France in Paris...
me: erm...no that's paris in France!!!!!!
him: Oh...as you can tell I don't know much about geography!

hahaha I never had a go though, we laughed and that was it...another few good ones all from different people:

him: we kicked you ass in the revolutionary war!
me: wow, what's it feel like to be 200 years old?

him: are you australian?
me: no, I'm english, why?
him: you say "mate" alot...

Brilliant!! gotta love that stuff, still regardless you wouldn't find me calling all Americans stupid, that's unfair by a long shot.

I also like how you talked about how big and bad London was and all that. As somebody born and raised in Torrance, CA, I can tell you, any American city would make London its bitch and you'd probably end up having to do its laundry too.

EDIT: Just because the American guy didn't know where the Eiffel Tower is, doesn't make you (or London, for that matter) any less lame than it really is.

i have learned to let things go a bit on this board but this sheyat is WAY out of line. canada is my adopted country (via marriage and our son being registered as a canadian citizen)and i love it completely. NOTHING that you have said in this oh so dulcet post makes a shred of sense. it sounds like the opinions of rednecks in honkeytonk joints that wouldn't be able to find toronto on a map with a map.

i think you are simply jealous that canada and canadians are so much more respected in the world than americans.

why are you so intent on being a frakking major git??? if you break out of your nursery every so often to come and piss off the adults congratulations- you are accomplishing your goal.
