this was on the scifiwire today. big, big warning though - the source of this was the sun tabloid, not the most reliable venue of information. but it is still and interesting rumor nonetheless.

Gilliam Replacing Ledger With Depp?
According to a rumor printed in the British tabloid The Sun, director Terry Gilliam is looking to Johnny Depp to take over the role played by late actor Heath Ledger in the currently shooting fantasy film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Ledger was six weeks away from finishing his work on the film when he was found dead in a New York apartment on Jan. 22.

"There is a point in the film when Heath falls through a magic mirror," a studio source told the paper. "He could change into another character after that, and that is where Johnny would come in. It's a weird, fantasy, time-travel movie, so Heath's character could easily change appearance. It would be a poignant moment. Johnny’s not working at the moment, so everyone is praying he will do it."

Gilliam previously worked with Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the uncompleted The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (later the subject of the documentary Lost in La Mancha).

addendum: crap i just realized i should've put this in media. would one of you fine mods move it over, it makes more sense for it to be there.

That would just be stupid and confusing. Just have the new actor start from scratch, and redo the thing.

Not that I care about this film at all, but swapping cast in mid-movie is never a good idea.

I was really disapointed with Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm...I mean it was moderately entertaining and all....but I expect so much more from the man who gave me Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas....

So true. I was just reflecting on the exact same sentiment the other day when I read a listing of some of Ledger's works. That movie had such potential, but just didn't pull the pieces together and seemed to have been outright lacking in the scripting department.

Sounds too contrived and will probably come across as such...

Shame they can't claim on insurance and do all the scenes again with Depp...
