Edit: Whoops, that's "King of Kong".

I didn't know quite where to put this, media or games. Anyway, here goes.

I watched this recently, and its become one of my favorite documentaries ever. Basically, it follows Steve Weibe, a regular joe who is attempting to beat the world record high score for Donkey Kong. It starts out normal enough, but it quickly becomes apparent that Steve won't get the recognition he deserves unless he proves his worth to the classic gaming nerds at the world famous arcade, Fun Spot.

So begins one our journey in to one of the oddest, offbeat subcultures in existence. The bulk of the movie takes turns introducing us to a large cast of characters, ranging from the guy who stays up for 2 days straight to confirm a high score, to the current king of Donkey Kong, Billy Mitchell. The film sort of portrays him as the villain, as most of his screen time is made up of smug remarks and self praise. Will Steve be able to overcome not only the high score, but the acceptance of the classic gaming nerds? Or will Billy's seemingly untouchable score of over 800,000 stand the test of time?

I implore all of you to check it out, it works as a comedy as it does a heartwarming inspirational tale. Here's another review, if you're not quite swayed yet:

I watched this Sunday night (the benefit of working at Blockbuster where I get to rent things early) and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Here are some of my thoughts in spoiler form as not to spoil it for others.

After watching I thought maybe they used creative editing to make Billy Mitchell seem more like a villain, but then I started to think of the things he did such as how at the end he attended the Guiness event, but refused to compete and ignored Steve Weibe. That combined with his remarks he made during the movie really make him seem like a self absorbed jerk. My favorite was the interview at the end where the one guy next to him was saying how Steve Weibe was basically accepted into their click and when they asked Billy Mitchell about Steve he says something about how there isnt enough information for him to reply... Anyway, he was a bit of a jerk, but still has mad Donkey Kong Skills.

Oh yeah, I thought is protege was hillarious when he was running around the arcade announcing the upcoming Donkey Kong Kill Screen, it just made me laugh how big of a deal it was.

Support my friends! See this movie! I've been championing this film on the board right before it came out - it was made by a very good friend of mine and now it's on DVD.
