my american brethren today is the day that stephen decatur struck the first of a series of fatal blows against the barbary pirates by recapturing the frigate philadelphia in tripoli harbor (it had run aground).
and it is also the day that howard carter unsealed tutankhamun's burial chamber and gave his famous reply to the question "do you see anything?"
carter's reply: "yes, wonderful things."
