If they are going to use Myspace as the official film website the least they could do is keep an updated list where Diary of the Dead is playing. From the reviews looks like this one will be direct to DVD soon.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing as i tried to find out if this upcoming weekend will have more showings in more cities.
if they're gonna be on myspace, at least update the site once in a while.

I don't think GAR is THAT cheap. A good website with deluxe hosting costs only 150 bucks a year (average) including the domain and some extra for the bandwidth he would need. He could have easily afforded that out of his own account.
I think GAR was transmitting another one of his famous political satires on America's viral addiction to social networking and youtubeness (word?). I really don't think money was a factor in his decision to build a Diary of the Dead website.
I will not get to see this movie until I return to the United States but I am reserving judgment and try not to read all the negative reviews it is getting prior to my first viewing.
Best,

Romero has nothing to do with the distribution or advertising of the film. He is the director. In an interview at Sundance, he mentions his official web site, which he had a hand in creating and maintaining himself until the freaks ruined it, as they do everything else on the Net.
At 68 years old, Romero has been busting his ass to make personal appearances at DIARY screenings. Although he probably isn't responsible for arranging this aspect of promotion, when was the last time a famous director personally greeted us regular idiots at the opening of his latest film? Never, if memory serves me right.

Too cheap to get a website
Look at his friends list, many more subscriptions than an official site would've got.

while I am disappointed in the lack of an "official" website lets not forget they at least gave us something albeit on Myspace. Now i'm not sure if the Myspace site was to tie into Romero's commentary on the film or the fact that Myspace is and has been gaining popularity for celebrities to endorse their products.
Every year there are more and more movies having a myspace page & an official site. While a .com address is the first on everyone's list, remember Myspace is a free place to get a lot of advertising. I'm not sure what the cost to Myspace is to advertise as a features page or video, George has gotten a lot of hits off of the Diary page.

I offered up my services for an official flash site to George & his management to no avail...I'm sure I could have done it justice, but they chose a different route.
I don't think it has to do with being "cheap" it's the simple availability of myspace and the medium... it actually fits right into the ideals in the film.

Diary of the Dead official UK website: www.diaryofthedead.co.uk
But that was created by Optimum Releasing, the UK distributor, not the Weinstein Group.

No matter how you stack it, "youtubeness" is not an acceptable substitution for television spots and movie previews. That's why some people are ending up in theaters so quiet that the rats can be heard scampering by. Someone really dropped the ball in advertising this movie. I wonder if they'll make more of an effort to promote the DVD?

That probably means 1 Fangoria ad for dvd promotion.

I wouldn't be surprised if the UK gets decent DVD ad promotion when the time comes. It got decent ads for the cinema release and got more screens than America did.
Still though - the DVD had better be quality, and don't even dare double-dip that sh*t you pesky Weinsteins!
The debacle over Grindhouse is bad enough, thank you very much. :|
