I am curious what was on that thing that made th USA so determined to destroy it vs the chance of another country getting its hands on its chred wreckage.

Hope they didn't shoot it down because it had a unusally high level of radiation. Hope it wasn't hanging around Venus.

It was my understanding that they were afraid of it crashing and exploding potentially killing people....but I dunno I never followed this story to closely...

From the news reports it was apparently the fuel that was dangerous, so they wanted to blow it up before it hit the atmosphere. Putin says it was for another more sinister reason, but what could be more sinister than killing people would be anybody's guess.

marie has hit it on the head. the main reason for shooting it down was because it was full of incredibly toxic fuel.

...so now toxic chemicals mutated by the atmostphere and radiation are falling all over the planet... Hmmm... Starts nailing doors and windows shut....

yes this does sound very much like it could be the begininng of a movie - a movie of a type that we are all very familiar with and love.

China tested a ground-based medium-range ballistic missile ASAT on 17 January 08. http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/world/china/asat.htm

Shooting down the US satellite over the Pacific this week was a message to both Russia and China. Now they are aware that US Navy Aegis cruisers can bring down any orbiting satellite at will.

Reason 1: Take out the hydrazine.

Reason 2: "Hey Russia, China, Iran, look what we can do to things coming at us in space. What do y'all think of 'Star Wars' NOW, eh?"

Both reasons were present. Who can say which was really most important? In any event, well done by the Navy!
