newbie question about Gears of War

as a newcomer to the world of the 360, this is gonna sound like a simple thing, but how the hell do u kill General Raam? i can't get any further and everything i try ends up with my character being spread across the floor

When they leave him is when you want to shoot him. I did this with my brother and basically I tried to hold Raams fire while my brother snuck behind him and used the turret gun for extra damage. If you need space to run around you can shoot down the side doors on the train.

get in cover, shoot till his kryll shield disperses, then get out the heavy weapons or sniper rifle and shoot, repeat a few times to win.

I beat the bastard first time, and yet it took me about two-dozen goes to get past the first big monster at the end of Act I and then the Gas Station in Act II . The bow and arrow thing (with the explosive tips) works a treat on him. Also, lob some grenades when he's far enough away, those do some good damage too. It's just about keeping the barrage up...then when he's nearing you, barge it to the other end of the train car and finish his ass off. Boshty. Then when the final cinematic came up, which you can't pause, I got a phone call I had to take......so I watched it on YouTube.

If you're doing RAAM solo, use Lancer/Torque bow combo. Take cover (while staying in the light) while RAAM fires at you with chaingun. Torque bow until the Kryll fly away leaving RAAM exposed. Shoot RAAM with Lancer while he's vulnerable. Active reloads help with damage. When the Kryll come back, Torque bow him again. Rinse and repeat. In the normal and hardcore difficulties, you should be able to kill him before he overruns your position. But in the eventuality that he does overrun you, roadie run to the other side and take cover at the other end. Ignore the turret. It's a Kryll deathtrap. If you're co-oping, it's good for one of you to use Lancer/Sniper combo while the other uses Lancer/Torque bow. One of you use Sniper and the other use the Torque bow (Torque bow seems to work best) to disperse kryll. Then together, shoot RAAM with Lancers. You'll take him down quick with that method, even on Insane.

As everyone else said. I just tried to use the lancer on him, and he went down pretty quick. point at his head and just hold the trigger down, he dies pretty fast. word to the wise, if your close enough to him to unload and never miss with the lancer, then you better be damned sure you kill him, otherwise your chances of living are maybe 20%?
